Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

Our mail lady drives a truck and she was still frozen yesterday when she came in. She was still barely moving after we fed her hot chocolate and warmed up her socks. I think she does a mixture of driving and walking. Those aren’t the best heated vehicles around, lots of cracks and such to let air in and out.

People are really ripping into the University for only “requesting” that students not be dropped from classes for missing tomorrow.

Most of my friends from out of state will not be in until Thursday because of flight cancellations. My car is not starting so it’s not looking good for me to get out there tomorrow- and I’m in state! (Though a commuter).

Several districts have already closed again tomorrow.

ETA: One of my friends emailed our epid professor and got a pretty nasty email back when she said she wasn’t going to be there because her SIXTH flight has been cancelled (she’s been trying to get out since Sunday morning).

My senior D is taking a winter session class and GOT LOST on campus today. In the freezing cold. As a senior. Lost. Four years. Same campus.

zoosermom-are the NYC airports open for arrivals today (Tuesday?).

Newark is working on a reduced schedule, but JFK and LaGuardia are operational.

Thanks–S trying to get in from Mexico.

Love the sliver lining for your H! Weather “trauma” = tuition!

Temperature is up to 0 in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, headed for an expected afternoon high of +1. Hooray! We’re heading in the right direction. Daytime temps in the mid-30s forecast for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

You should see all of us doing the “money from heaven snow dance.” If we video-ed it, it would probably go viral.

Our schools are out for day 3 tomorrow. MAYBE he’ll finish his last essay???

You are very right, emily!

Cold and hot is very relative. Landlocked regions and coasts have different temperature ranges not only because of their placement longitudinally and latitudinally, but because of the bodies of water present.

Today’s weather was quite the ordeal. I could deal with this cold if it weren’t for the whipping 30 mph wind. Couldn’t catch a break while walking on campus with the large buildings speeding up the winds!

In the very low teens now in Boston.
Down to 8 or 9 tonight in Boston – looks to be the lowest for this particular cold snap – then gradually rising to well above freezing (with 40 forecast for Friday, 50 & rain on Saturday).

Whacked.

So no school in Minneapolis/St. Paul for 2 days…Mall of America announces free rides to all students…Mall is packed and the children the Governor was keep in their toasty warm houses were out on the roads heading to the mall…

My kids are not in Minneapolis/St. Paul. We in a suburban district which also decided to close. However, the before/after school program is running full day for those who need it and it is housed in schools (for a fee). So, it is too cold for the kids to go to school for classes, but not cold enough for them to spend their day at the same school to play.

^^^Maybe the issue was getting the teachers and administrators to school.

Many, many school districts here in SE MI have cancelled for tomorrow. All of Washtenaw County (where Ann Arbor is) have cancelled.

I have a forced snowday tomorrow as my car is still not starting. I’ve been in contact with the classes that I’m supposed to have for tomorrow and all have been very understanding.

Sigh.

Delivery people are still out around here. Finally got my backpack that has been delayed for almost a week due to the weather :). I wanted to ask the delivery person if they wanted hot chocolate but they left too quickly…

Well, no mall action going on around here, as it is an outside walking mall–lol. BHG is ready to head back to school tomorrow, and so are her friends. D and I flipped a coin to see who was to fetch the mail. I lost. I’ll grab it after running a few errands and while still in a warm vehicle–grin. I never wish to feel this cold again, although I do not remember how it felt in 1994, 1996 or 1997 here in MN. I think one of those school and state closings was due to ice.

@ Lerkin, I think it was more for the kids NOT in daycare on school property, as most schools do not have daycare on site. School districts did not want kids out in this cold walking to school, or waiting on school buses or waiting on public transportation. I’m in a MN Metro suburb and the local elementary school does not offer before or after childcare.

The reason schools are closed are due to the dangerous wind chills that students would have to deal with when walking to school or waiting at the bus stop. School was cancelled in my school district (suburbs of Minneapolis/SP) and they had to be. I personally have to walk for about 4 minutes from the crappy free student parking lot at my school. That would not be safe and many kids would be exposed for longer periods of time than that. I hope I don’t have school tomorrow but I probably will because it will ONLY be -10ish in the morning.

And there is a big difference between going to the mall in the cold and going school in the cold. Walking into a building or store for 30 seconds is not going to do any damage.

Oops, I’m not a parent. Oh well.

Fortunately my car starts and I can safely make it out onto our now-plowed dirt road, so I can officially move back into my dorm tomorrow.

I stayed home because I didn’t want to leave my mother alone and snowed in, and I’m just glad it worked out.

However, I am sad that I missed out on some epic snowball fights outside the dorms the last couple days. But I keep reminding myself that staying home and shoveling snow for my arthritic, 57 year-old is more important.

It’s about 37 degrees outside in Florida right now…will dip into 20s tonight and supposed to start warming up tomorrow…80s forecast again for this weekend. Just took our chihuahua for short walk…she HATES the cold. Pooch has a small space heater with fan in front of her dog bed, she just hopped in front of heater and is rolling around rotisserizing herself with the space heater.
