I stayed late to watch THAT? Talk about lack of talent and originality…

I love the Arcade Fire song “We Use to Wait” that is on the album. Google Chrome Experiment used the song for “The Wilderness Downtown” interactive music video.

The thing that su**ed in the the production was CBS going to commercials and spending at least 45 seconds repeatedly hyping the upcoming performances. That’s about 12-15 lost minutes when the performers could of really been performing!

I do not get Arcade Fire.
I went to a movie instead- checking in on my blackberry to see who won best rock album.
Dont care about Lady Gaga. Reminds me of people who hire limousines for their kids graduation from preschool- pretty soon they have no where else to go.

We watched last night for the first time in years. I was glad our two teens were in the room to explain some things. D is only 14 so she is in charge of the radio in the car, so when there was someone I did not recognize, I’d look at her and ask “Do I know them??”. Why should I remember, if she is around??

Both of them like a wide variety of music - S is a musician so he appreciates the talent that can sometimes be hidden in the entertainment. He loves John Mayer (who is trying too hard to look like Johnny Depp!) and Keith Urban so the trio with Norah Jones was one of our favorites last night.

We enjoyed the opening number and I think Christina has an incredible voice, but has anyone suggested to her that she just sing the notes as written and try not to create some event?? I’m not a huge fan of Babs, but I sure appreciate her voice and she knows how to sing a song. Pet Peeve - quit trying to show off…just sing.

If Eminem rapped anything inappropriate, I doubt I would have caught it. I don’t enjoy rap, but I know the guy is talented. I wish I’d see him smile.

Love the Cee Lo tune. I thought it kind of clever they referred to his song as “the tune also referred to as Forget You”. Also pairing him with Muppets made me forget what the F really stood for.

Did you notice the elaborate sets??? Good gosh! You gotta wonder why with all that “talent” in the room, you need all that

Saving grace…just when you think the world has gone to he]] and a hand basket…Justin Beiber is NOT chosen as best new artist. I have faith again.

S tells me that Arcade Fire is really good, but neither he and I could get past the flashing lights during the performance. He commented that he’d have a stroke if he had to sit in a concert with those lights.

Mick Jagger has some energy. Good for him - amazing he is still around.

Whoa…I just looked through those and these are the worst looking dresses as a whole that I have ever seen. I know it is the music biz, but still.

I have to say that Jennifer Hudson does look terrific and like a whole new person.

The following slide show with well written commentary of the best and worst of the Grammy performances is worth a look:

[Aretha Franklin Tribute - Best and Worst of the 2011 Grammys - TIME](http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2048962_2048961_2048950,00.html)

Love the Cee Lo tune. I thought it kind of clever they referred to his song as “the tune also referred to as Forget You”. Also pairing him with Muppets made me forget what the F really stood for.

I think I have only heard Bill Shatners cover.
no muppets :(

Ek I was wondering what you would have to say about the grammys as i know you are a music fan, for me your gaga comment was spot on.

I found myself agreeing largely with the Time article. Liked Muse, Cee-Lo, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire’s second song, Jolene.

I don’t get the appeal of that Soul Sister song or the Lady Antebellum song.

The tribute to Aretha Franklin was great and well-deserved. Although I thought Jennifer Hudson tried a little too hard to ‘belt it out.’ Really enjoyed Christina McBride’s rendition of Aretha’s ‘Until You Come Back to Me,’ a very under-appreciated Aretha hit.

But alas I am dissapointed at the lack of substantial talent and creativity overall in today’s music business. Well, there’s always talent but it seem as there’s not as much of it as 30 years ago, or even in the 1990s. Where are the Trent D’arbys, the Stevie Wonders, the Cat Stevenses, Marvin Gayes, Al Greens, Gordon Lightfoots, Harry Chapins, Aretha Franklins, Grace Slicks, Janis Joplins, Dire Straits, Patsy Clines, Gil Scott-Herons, Carlos Alberto Jobims, Stevie Nicks etc.?

emeraldkity…people REALLY hire limosines for preschool graduation??

LakeWashington, I felt the same about a lot of the current “talent” on that show and I can’t decide if I am just getting old and don’t like a lot of the current stuff (like my parents would say of my generation’s music) or if there really is truth in our thinking!

However, I have some faith as a i know many young music performers (my own D included) who are very talented musically, but perhaps some who achieve commercial fame are not necessarily the best musical talent that exists.

(that said, there were several who did sing well on the show…the women in the Aretha tribute, Norah Jones, etc.)

LW
great wonderful talented musicians are out there all over the place.
Proportion of talent is not related to proportion of fame.

two local gals worth a listen.

DH and I still laugh when we hear Aretha Franklin’s name … not because her name is funny but because it reminds us of what DD used to call her when she was little … Urethra Franklin. I was in nursing school when DD was really young and I used to read a lot. Occasionally, DD would ask me to read to her from my books and she obviously picked up on some things.

Oh, that’s priceless!

Years ago when my mom was a nurse in a hospital pediatrics ward, there actually was a patient named Urethra … maybe her last name was Franklin?!

I am so happy Justin Bieber didn’t win last night. He appeals to the under 12 crowd and will be a has been by the time he is 16.

I think it’s just a matter of differing tastes. I was never a Janis Joplin fan and don’t tend to like smokey, throaty female voices. Not crazy about Norah Jones’ voice for example, but I liked the way she sounded last night.

Really happy about that, too.

Yeah Soozievt, I fight hard to repress generational grumpiness all of the time. Often when I’m in the middle of a rant about the young, that famous 1950s black & white TV image of the southern politician ranting about the moral decay and communist ploting of Elvis and his gyrating hips comes to mind. Lord I hope I never sound THAT grumpy!!!

We all found out that Elvis had plenty of talent.
