Great British Baking Show

Hard to take seriously his comments when hand raised pies were judged by home much gelatin was poured into pie. Yuck.

Might have been my least favorite GBBS ever. Not just Paul ill-informed comments but also the food produced. Really not up to the standard of the show. That hand pie was just disgusting…

Those kinds of pie are very British but, yeah, meat enrobed in gelatin and encased in heavy pastry has never looked appetizing to me.

I know it didn’t turn out as planned, but I really would like to sample Sarah’s beef Wellington with the gorgonzola cheese. Just typing this makes me hungry for that flavor combination.

I’ll take it back - I would have liked to have tried the key lime pie (which was a lime tart - but still looked excellent). And some of the savory pies in the first round were worth trying. I just wondered if some of these contestants rehearsed these dishes at home before the contest. Like Sarah’s Beef Wellington and Manisha Banana Pie - both of which were doomed due to failures in technique.

The contestants choose and practice their first and last (showstopper) dishes in advance. The only surprise to them is the dish they get ingredients and minimal instructions for. This has been a disappointing season so far. Is it that pies can’t be fancier? Decorating can surely add to them.

That key lime pie with the ginger sounded good. I like ginger. I like candied ginger but on one shot of the pie that had been cut into, it should a HUGE chunk of ginger in the pie. I don’t think I’d really like to bite into that as I think it would be overpowering.

Sometimes, I just like traditional recipes. Key lime pie is so good, why mess with it? If you must, maybe some coconut whipped cream.

^^^^^ This is one that intrigued me although I also thought the HUGE ginger chunk should have been better incorporated into the basic texture. I found the recipe. The filling called for more full fat whipping cream than I am comfortable with. Maybe I can figure out a “Cooking Lite” version. The sweet pastry base used ground ginger - this is something I can feel comfortable adding.

How about making a cookie crumb crust from gingersnaps? That would be good. I like cookie/cracker crust better actually.

Just looked at the recipe online. 1 tablespoon of ginger in the crust. That’s a lot! It also says the ginger in the filling should be finely minced. Sure wasn’t in the show.

tonight’s was the craziest episode ever

Making strudel dough form scratch - what a difficult challenge. I don’t think I’d ever really care to try.

What a relief!
Any other outcome would not have sat well so a double next week is the most fair.

I found it interesting that they followed last week’s episode featuring the bakers’ interpretation of pie, a traditional American dessert, with a challenge making pudding, a traditional British dessert. It really highlighted the difference in tastes.

Agree that making strudel sounds like a nightmare.

Speaking of the last episode and Paul’s comments on American pies being too sweet, here’s a recipe for sticky toffee pudding. Note that in addition to the dates which have natural sweetness, the recipe calls for 2 and 1/4 cups of sugar between the cake part and the sauce for 6 servings. That’s more than a 1/3 of a cup of sugar for each serving.

^^^ Wow, that is a lot of sugar. I think even more than in pecan pie, one of sweetest pies I know.

Dang it…I haven’t turned on the TV for over 2 months. I didn’t tape this. Is it available somewhere to catch up with the earlier episodes??

@coralbrook It looks like PBS is blocking the first 2 episodes of the season now for anyone other than “passport” members but you can watch the other episodes on their website. The older ones will probably start disappearing as well. https://www.pbs.org/show/great-british-baking-show/episodes/season/5/

I’m confused…didn’t Mary leave the show? Or is this an old season that is just now showing in the US?

Thanks for the link. I had only tried the first episode and struck out.

Episodes 3 through the most recent are all you can watch on PBS right now without a membership.

Mary is in this series. The “new” version is no longer on BBC and Mary didn’t follow the show to the new network in the UK.

Coralbrook, it’s an old season.

“The Great British Baking Show” returns to PBS Friday for what’s being billed as a fifth season. But it’s really an early season of the show, known as “The Great British Bake-Off” in the United Kingdom, where it aired in 2012. These 10 new episodes mark the last PBS will air featuring the show’s original cast, including Berry and fellow judge Paul Hollywood, and hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
