This is not to take away from the “chills” thread so I will start a splinter thread. How about your favorite guitar riffs? I’ll start with a ground ball and one of the best:

Layla

Layla

Black Magic Woman- Carlos Santana

I think this is in the wrong spot, but hopefully it will get moved.

I’ll just say this:

There can be a fine line between a “riff” and a “hook”.
Sometimes a riff is a hook.
Sometimes it isn’t.
Some of the riffs mentioned above are great because they are great hooks.
But they aren’t really necessarily particularly great riffs.

A riff that is a great hook is a whole lot more interesting, and significant, to me than a riff that is a great riff. Usually.

Think about it.

Some great hooks, IMO:
intros to Layla, Hazy Shade of Winter, A Whiter shade of Pale
Great riffs:
I donno, maybe every note that is too fast for me in “I’m coming Home”, which is like all of them. A little more down-tempo, maybe Garcia’s lead in Casey Jones.

Divided Sky-Phish
Intro to Sweet Jane from Lou Reed Live
Stella Blue-Grateful Dead

Guns n’ Roses November Rain – Slash’s solo near the end.

Immortality

Although my favorite version was probably the show they did at Benaroya Hall in Seattle

Monydad, I must be getting old–I’m drawing a blank on the intro to Casey Jones. How would you classify all of the classic Stones songs–Satisfaction/Honky Tonk Woman, etc?

Just saw CRD’s Smoke on the Water and 25 or 6 to 4–Excelllent!

And from the 11 thread–Cinnamon Girl.

Classification is in the eyes of the classifier, and I don’t want to think- have to preserve those few remaining brain cells.

Besides #7 seemed more compelling and profound when I was writing it than it does now.

all time best: B*tch from Sticky Fingers, Rolling Stones

in Monydad in #12: was you writin’ ‘bout riffin’ while doin’ da spliffin’

Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band

Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison
Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
