Group Think? Are we offering solid advice? Are we being influenced too much by rankings?

Thank you for your continued support and contributions.

My pleasure. So glad it is appreciated and taken to heart.

The VOLUNTEER mods would like to enjoy our weekend (and Palm Sunday, for those who observe). This thread is taking too much moderation time and therefore is in slow mode for the next 24 hours.

I was also pretty close with my guess of all accepted. It remains to be seen but I think in the end I’ll be a winner!

P.s. Mods I hope you enjoy your Sunday!

Thanks for sharing. Results were in line with what I’d expect coming from MA and hearing about friends’ experiences with their kids. The only slight surprise was Villanova considering it was only EA and not ED. I’d expect an eventual rejection (with an outside possibility at a WL) from Michigan. To me the lesson here is that very solid students with some ā€œBsā€, and who lack maximum rigor, are still going to have a lot of very solid college choices. My one caveat is that this is only the case if cost is not a factor - if there is a certain price point that must be reached, it is much more challenging to find the right fit. Many schools where those students could be admitted are off the table because they aren’t going to be affordable.

we are in agreement and thanks.

Yes, although I might add the caveat of applying EA instead of RD.

For example, I know two OOS (actually reciprocity state) applicants with high stats (large suburban public schools, no hooks, 3.95-4.0 unweighted, max rigor, ACT ~32-33, good but standard ECs) who applied to Madison, both in humanities. The one who applied EA was admitted, the one who applied RD has been waitlisted (while being accepted to a number of reaches with ~12% admit rates.)

Lesson: When applying to OOS public schools, apply EA if you possibly can.

My hubby is truly loving these clips, so much we are all watching the movie after Sunday dinner.

Hmmm. I tried the ChatGPT thing. Apparently my S25 is getting into Richmond and Denison with no issue but Miami University and Elon are iffy. :woman_shrugging:

Maybe you need to work on your ā€œprompt engineeringā€?

(Yes, this is a thing.)

too bad. i was getting excited about AI and what it can predict with college admissions.

Maybe! I used the same wording posted above, changing it to my son’t stats. When I asked for elaboration it also told me that because Gonzaga was in the south, they may be interested in a student from Washington, so I’d say there are some quirks at least! Here’s the full list of schools S25 is considering and what ChatGPT said.

Likely to Get Accepted:

  1. Gonzaga
  2. Furman
  3. Denison
  4. Trinity University
  5. U of Richmond

Moderate Chance of Acceptance:

  1. Elon
  2. Miami University Farmer School
  3. SMU - Cox Undergraduate
  4. Lehigh
  5. Davidson

Reach Schools:

  1. William and Mary
  2. Wake Forest
  3. Notre Dame
  4. W&L

Did you use ChatGPT 3, or ChatGPT 4?

4 does tend to work better… but maybe you already asked 4?

4 also has DALL-E, so it can draw bizarre pictures like this, if you ask for a graphical illustration related to its responses (as I just did). Not that this is the least bit helpful, though

Sorry, I’ve kind of highjacked this thread, but for those interested, Gemini was much more accurate imo, and even seemed to rank the reaches in a way that I would agree with. I was using ChatGPT 3 as well so that may also be an issue. While ChatGPT said nothing about test scores, Gemini has opinions

Here are Gemini’s results.

Likely:

  • Elon University: Elon prioritizes a well-rounded student and values leadership and community service).
  • Miami University (Farmer School of Business): Miami’s Farmer School of Business is well-regarded, and the student’s GPA and rigor suggest success there.
  • Gonzaga University: As a Catholic university in the Pacific Northwest, Gonzaga might find particular appeal for the student. Their strong academics and commitment to service align well.

Match:

  • Furman University: A selective liberal arts college in the South, Furman appreciates strong academics and extracurricular involvement.
  • SMU - Cox School of Business: While competitive, the student’s profile is a good fit for SMU’s Cox School of Business.
  • Trinity University (Texas): Another strong liberal arts college, Trinity might be a good match for the student’s academic and leadership qualities.

Reach:

  • Denison University: A highly selective liberal arts college, Denison seeks well-rounded students with exceptional standardized test scores (though not a factor here). It might be a reach without them.
  • Lehigh University: A competitive university with a strong engineering program, Lehigh often seeks students with high standardized test scores.
  • Washington and Lee University (W&L): A highly selective liberal arts college, W&L is known for its challenging academics and focus on leadership. It’s a reach without test scores.
  • University of Richmond: Similar to W&L, Richmond is a highly selective liberal arts college with a focus on strong academics and leadership. Test scores might influence their decision.
  • Wake Forest University: A highly selective university, Wake Forest seeks top performers with well-rounded profiles.
  • Davidson College: Another very selective liberal arts college, Davidson prioritizes strong academics and well-rounded students. Test scores might play a role here.
  • University of Notre Dame: Highly selective and prestigious, Notre Dame seeks top students with strong academics, well-rounded profiles, and a Catholic background. It’s a reach, especially without test scores.

I don’t really think it’s highjacking, there are a lot of mentions of AI in this thread (which is why I tried ChatGPT).

I do think 4 is a lot better than 3, but it’s also good to try different AI products, as you did

If this thread is considered highjacked, perhaps another thread might be warranted, such as ā€œlet’s test AI on our kids’ results!ā€

ChatGPT needs better geography data to train its reasoning
