Guilty Pleasures, TV edition

The supersizers was interesting, though to be honest you also have to be careful, in that the diet they showed I suspect was not what people ate every day, and especially the poorer classes would not be eating what the show was portraying, in let’s say Victorian or restoration times. I thought the best episode was the WWII one, that showed how Britain tried to deal with food that was severely rationed without the population coming out of the war malnourished, and the funny part was eating that diet they both came out of the week healthier than they went in.

My favorite guilty pleasure was “One Life to Live” when it was still on. I started watching both it and “General Hospital” when I was young and kept watching both off and on for years and years, never admitting it to anyone except my husband. Oh, and my mother, who also watched them! We used to have long conversations about the characters on those shows as if they were real people.

How come no one has mentioned … The Duggars?

My work out time increased from 30 minutes to 45 to 60 and sometimes more minutes when the gym installed individual TVs for each piece of equipment. How can I leave before the great reveal or the decision on which house or in the middle of a House Hunters-in-some-great-International location? Four Brides? Can’t miss those extravagances and then, of course, must see the winner’s scores.

I just binged on season 6 of the Great British Bake-Off. Shortest 16 hour flight from Asia I’ve ever experienced!

I mentioned the Duggars as a past guilty pleasure! - but no more.

The Duggars are on again, in a different form featuring just the older kids, mostly the unmarried ones. Momma and Daddy are nowhere to be seen though I think I saw Anna in the promo for next week’s show. It’s called “Counting On.”

It is probably easier to admit to watching crap on an anonymous forum than IRL where so many people I meet claim they never watch TV or only watch PBS. Not saying they aren’t telling the truth. Perhaps there is a correlation between hanging out in the parents cafe on CC and watching bad TV?

^ My friends IRL know the crap I watch because they watch it too. We also all watch the Masterpiece Theater shows and a lot of other things on PBS. I assume most of the people responding on this thread watch shows with some redeeming qualities.

I read the website site “Reality Tea” but I also read the New York Times.

Raising my hand to admit that, yes, I occasionally indulge in 60s sitcoms…I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Leave It To Beaver, Green Acres and others. Just the other night, I watched poor Oliver Douglas fall off the roof of the barn while wearing a 3 piece suit.

When my children were in middle school I bought the DVD sets of all the episodes of Gilligan’s Island. It was a huge hit with their friends.

Anyone remember the original Dark Shadows? That was my absolute favorite growing up.

We had an Amish cleaning lady who came once a week when I was a kid. She loved Dark Shadows. At one point they changed the time it was aired and moved it out an hour (past when she would normally leave). She asked if she could stay an extra hour each week and do ironing so that she could watch Dark Shadows. We all got a kick out of that. And I think that was the only time we ever had pressed clothes when I was growing up, my mom definitely did not believe in ironing!

About One Life to Live. In college, we were all hooked on All My Children. Back when it was 30 minutes, we could watch til the last commercial. What came after that was nothing, so we could still make it to the 1:30 class.

Lol @Mansfield . One of my favorite shows from that era is That Girl, but it’s hard to find.

Tonight, a local woman will be on “Say Yes to the Dress.” I’m definitely going to watch.

Is That Girl no longer on the Me Channel?

I watched Dark Shadows, One Life to Live and General Hospital growing up.

When my daughter was home for spring break, we realized she had not really ever watched I Love Lucy reruns. We spent a few hours watching episodes on Amazon Prime. I had watched the old reruns so much as a kid that I practically had them memorized. The gender politics certainly made them a guilty pleasure, but they were so funny.

@dstark Last I heard, That Girl was on MeTV at 6:30 am or something, which is getting-ready-for-work time.

@LasMa,

Thanks.

I prefer the Odd Couple anyway.
I am not guilty about watching the Odd Couple though…so nevermind.

Not all old TV is guilt TV. IMO the old Dick Van Dyke Show is still one of the best ever.

fixer upper on hgtv–i want to move to waco and have chip and jojo do a house for me. i actually think i just want to have them adopt me…they wont notice an extra big kid, would they?

i also dont know why i keep watching the curse of oak island–nothing ever gets resolved and if you ask me, they dont pursue the stuff i think they should (i would have been at the U testing that womans cross to support her story!)

but my guiltiest pleasure of maybe all time is the Peoples Couch (Bravo, fri nights @10pm). i loaded my dvr with the season. by far, the.funniest.show on tv in a long time. for the uninitiated, essentially its what it sounds like…different groups of people sitting on couches critiquing (making fun of) various current shows. its pretty hilarious. 10p is sort of late for me, so to add to the guilty pleasureness of it, its best watched in a marathon on say, a random rainy tuesday with various family members who regularly make fun of the one who is a bravho…it was easy to suck them in to the hilarity.

but i’ll pretty much watch anything of low value.
