Happy (and windy and wet) Halloween!

Glad to hear that cities are changing trick or treat. It’s not safe for lots of reasons. Visibility for one, chance of limbs falling in another if there’s a chance of high winds. . D had a freak fall snowstorm on Halloween and they had tons of trees that went down. No electricity many places. It’s a mess for a wet heavy snow when there are still leaves on the trees.

Here in the north  we are having snow. But it’s 33 degrees and right now nothing is sticking. Snow is actually better than rain. My friend posted on Facebook that the kids won’t melt. I’m not sure if we’ll get the numbers but I haven’t heard that anything is canceled.

So we aren’t going anywhere. I’ll have my light on and candy ready.

S2 still insists on ToT this evening even tho it’s supposed to start storming at 5:30. Considering his costume is inflatable, I’m worried he’ll blow away!! LOL

It’s hard to say no though, when it’s a couple new friends in a different neighborhood up the road from us who have invited him. He has more in common w/ these 2 new boys than the boys on our street, so I really don’t want to hamper him at all.
We’ll see, maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll hold off a bit. Fingers crossed.

It was very odd to be walking the dog today and see a mix of fall leaves AND snow blowing around in the wind!

I have a fond memory of being very young and my costume was a flannel tiger outfit that could be used for PJs. It had a hard plastic mask to go with it. I was SO excited.

But then my mom insisted I put a coat on over the costume, and I was NOT having it.

I’ve already gotten into the candy 2 days ago…I want it gone! The kids who do one to my house will be getting multiple pieces!

Record-breaking snow in Wisconsin!

UW-Madison is going as the month of January for Halloween!

I love Halloween! We have 120 full size candy bars ready to go!
It’s lightly raining here, supposed to storm but not until around 9 which is when I usually turn out the light anyway. Of course some parents are upset, but having memories of wearing a parka over my costume convinced me that unless the weather is dangerous its ok.
FWIW I think the whole trunk or treat thing is lame. If I had had that offered as an alternative to trick or treating I would have said no way.

I saw a reference to those who want to change Halloween for a little rain (not talking wind storms here) as Halloweenies. I’m going to adopt that.

I’ve never needed to shovel the sidewalks for trick-or-treaters before! Today is a first. Brrr! Still snowing here.

@FallGirl , until I moved to rural Maine, I did not understand trunk or treat either. But there are literally no neighborhoods to trick-or-treat in and houses are very far apart, so if the kids want to amass a lot of candy very quickly, trunk or treat it is.

It should be about more than amassing candy quickly though, IMO. I grew up in a small town where houses were far apart and we did just fine. Same for my kids in the town I still live in where acreage is sizable. We hoofed it all over the place and would get quite the stash over several hours and many miles of walking. There was something special about going out at night, with your friends and even the walking and talking while going from house to house was part of the thrill. Plus seeing people you actually knew and who knew you. We worked for those calories!

We are currently under a tornado watch until midnight. The tv forecaster said anyone out trick or treating must absolutely be “weather aware” and listed times for various cities in the region to make sure they are done and inside. We are on the east side so with the storm moving west to east, our trick or treaters have a bit more time. Our neighborhood usually has a big pre-ToT gathering w/food and drinks, then the kids and parents set out. My kids are well past the age, so I’ll be home handing out candy. Normally the group doesn’t head out until it’s dark, but I expect to see them a little earlier.

D23 is all excited b/c one of the bachelors from the most recent Bachelorette is going to be at a neighbor’s house. This neighbor spends thousands and thousands decorating for Halloween every year, with a theme and actors. Apparently this bachelor, who is from the area, is a cousin or something and going to be there so D23 and her friend are going over later this evening (they do a tour of the house). D17 is currently studying abroad and apparently envious and in disbelief that D23 will get to see him (the bachelor is John Paul Jones for anyone who watches). We will see if it’s actually true or just rumor!

Have the tv on watching the local news…looks like there are severe thunderstorms already entering the greater metro area.

Just googled “John Paul Jones”. Prediction: Many moms and teen girls will be visiting that house this year. :sunglasses:

Last Saturday it was 75 and gorgeous outside. Sunday it rain/snowed, putting a nice coat of ice on cars. Tues we had many inches of snow, airport flight delays and cancellations (my daughter who is the luckiest kid in the world got one of the only flights into DIA from MCO). Yesterday sunny but 10 degrees. Today is 50 and sunny, so there will be a nice icy glaze on the streets and sidewalks for trick-or-treaters.

I am a Halloween crank! It shouldn’t be “rescheduled” unless dire conditions (we had back-to-back October Blizzard and Hurricane Sandy a bunch of years ago and half the state lost electricity so, yeah there are exceptions). Also I don’t like “scheduled” Halloween. When my mom and sis moved to PA, they were told that in their town Halloween was on a particular weekend day between 2 and 4. Bleh to that.

All week, Halloweenies were asking why we might still have it since it was going to rain? I mean it’s barely raining and it’s windy. It’s also seventy degrees. They won’t melt!

So like I said, I’m a Halloween crank. But plenty young parents I know have said the same thing
.

In MA the forecast was for rain so I bought less candy than usual. Now the rain has stopped and I’m worried we won’t have enough candy. We get between 400 and 600 on an average Halloween and one year when an ice storm took out the power in all the towns around us but not ours we had over 800 trick or treaters. Ours is the neighborhood kids go to if they don’t have a neighborhood conducive to trick or treating. I do have non-candy back up treats but still I hate to disappoint.

I dress my golden retriever in a different costume each year. Nothing fancy, just leftovers from when the kids were little. She used to hate wearing a costume but now she gets excited, I think because she’s realized it means it’s the night when lots of people are going to come to the door and make a fuss over her.

My corgi beagle is currently laying by me with a turtle costume on.

@twoinanddone what state do you live it - that’s a weather roller coaster!

Our T or T is still on. The rain has largely stopped (helpful!) but the wind is picking up. I wonder if everyone will get out in that first hour and dumb the second hour.

Mine is dressed like a holstein cow.

Our volume is way down compared to last year. Wet snow and winds are not a good combination for halloween.

Although I remember one year in Syracuse that we had more than a foot of snow that fell and we still had lots of trick or treaters.

It turns out we are not “halloweenies” after all. Someone posted a 2013 article where trick or treating was postponed. I don’t remember how bad it was that year, but I’m happy we’re doing it tonight, as I have to get this candy out of the house ASAP.

Happy Halloween from windy, sunny, 70s, single-digit himidity and smokey coastal LA. Fortunately, the air quality is better than it was this morning but if the winds shift it will get worse during the trick-or-treat hours. I wouldn’t be surprised if most parents of young kids make it an early night or just attend a trunk-or-treat event instead of going thru the neighborhood.

Quick report before my doorbell rings again - big decrease in numbers of preschool age kids, but the school age kids and teens are out in force. Have easily had over 100 kids so far.
