No information on that front. I would imagine Duke was aware of those students’ need of FA when offering them the spots.
The reddit OP said they were rejected in June though, so they were offered a spot after being rejected??
OP was waitlisted in March and then rejected in June when the waitlist closed, but he had originally been placed on the waitlist.
When they close the waitlist, everyone on it is effectively rejected.
For Harvard’s class of 2024, the waitlist closed on August 3rd—a Monday. This Monday was the first business day after the extended international deferment deadline of July 31st due to COVID. Because of this, I personally believe the waitlist will likely close on August 4th this year since the primary objective of Harvard AOs at this point is to secure replacements for international deferrals, which would make prolonging decisions until an arbitrary day of the week counterproductive. Honestly, the parallels between this year’s waitlist thread and the 2024 waitlist thread are pretty uncanny with the injunctions, lawsuits, and deferrals.
That’s a good point. How many got in last year under these circumstances after Aug 3rd?
hmm yeah i agree but i think more ppl accepted before that for sure.
I don’t see why they can’t send offers a day after the deadline. They will be well prepared and know exactly who they want to admit for every deferral they get. It’s a math exercise that I’m sure they can press a button and get the answer on.
Supposedly they don’t rank the waitlist so how would they figure out just based on the #s? Also, does anyone know how many they took off the waitlist for class of 2024? Should be an interesting comparison.
nah not ranked but like definitely ppl have deferred already, so im saying for those people, they have definitely already come up with viable replacements and just are waiting to release that information all at once.
Yeah they explicitly said not to rank wl. So I assume they would look at the whole pool again when they know exactly who to replace (with similar attributes?) and that process can take more than one day.
Yes, exactly my point. I can’t see how they can do this in one day. But if they took a decent number from class of 2024, perhaps I am wrong.
I’m assuming that if they decide not to take any more off the waitlist, they would have just come out and told us already.
yeah for sure. they’ve gotta take more off
they also said harvard admissions is need blind but it looks quite damn aware as of late so who knows what other changes have appended amidst their legal dramas.
True. Anything is possible this year.
Would be naive to think that they don’t know who their top candidates are right now to offer the waitlist. They have to decide at some point so why wait?
again, they do not traditionally rank the list so we don’t know if they even think of them as top candidates per se. our best knowledge stems from the fact that harvard tries its best to fill any gaps in the incoming class, and all of these gaps will only be certain by the end of today.
I think the conventional wisdom was that need blind only applied to REA and RD, and that everything could be considered for the WL. If you filled a niche that Harvard is looking for, you could still get off the WL even if you needed FA, but FA would be factor that they could consider.
I don’t think the deferrals will help us in opening a lot of spots cause they still need to hold the spaces for the 26-27 school year. If you look at the class of 2024, their class size was smaller by a few hundred than in typical years and one source said they only took about 40 from the waitlist. The following year for class of 2025, their size was a few hundred more than typical so it was probably all those deferrals who came back. When they said they have taken as many as 200 in the past, it was probably before their yield rates were below the 80%+ range. ![]()
