And then when they did report this, they were smeared in the press or squashed with settlements.
Interestingly, I had a conversation with a friend a while ago, and the topic of harassers came up. Some of them, apparently, genuinely believe that women enjoy being grabbed inappropriately etc. and that women would say “no” meaning “yes” teasingly. To those guys, only a kick in the groin or a slap in the face would mean stop.
She could have bitten him… B-)
There have been several of these recently: Cosby, Ailes, O’Reilly, Trump, and Weinstein.
These are powerful people and it is difficult to come forward. I hope that men are supporting these women and also coming forward when they know something.
Maybe, at least, the audience at the awards ceremonies this year will be spared the sanctimonious “We are such a wonderful industry” type speech. They make me gag.
It isn’t specific to Hollywood. We just hear about those instances because of the celebrity and at least those actresses have some kind of voice. When it comes to sexual harassment, it’s not a politics thing, although some sources seem to be spinning it that way. It’s rampant in our society, honestly.
“It isn’t specific to Hollywood.”
It seems that Silicon Valley has a big issue too.
Big law… IB… hmmm…
I don’t think you can criticize actresses for “asking for it” because of what they’re wearing. They are trying to get a role, and whether they do or not will depend on how appealing they might appear on screen. Most of the women showing up in Weinstein’s office or hotel room were meeting him because he dangled the prospect of a part in one of his movies. They weren’t there to discuss politics.
The representation of women in media is another issue, and this case indicates that the chips are stacked against women in general. He not only harassed actresses, but also women filmmakers. Maybe we’d have more quality movies if so much talent wasn’t cast aside in the film industry because they wouldn’t put out.
Women who act are now calling themselves “actors.” At least some of them are, anyway. I’m going to go with “actor” because the job is the same, whatever the gender. I don’t go to doctresses for health care, after all, or have a will written by a lawyress. College Confidential people don’t have daughters who are investment bankresses.
So it appears that sexual harassment is not limited to Fox News.
And now Ben Affleck;

And Affleck even makes fun of disabled people.
@“Cardinal Fang” I live in LA and actress is used all the time, even by actresses.
I hear you, @“Cardinal Fang” and thought about that before typing but it is easy shorthand for this discussion than having to refer to “female actors” to make one’s point clear.
“So it appears that sexual harassment is not limited to Fox News.”
Never has been but that doesn’t take away from how atrocious the Fox News situations are as well.
Maybe they will ask to be called zactors to avoid offending anyone’s gender sensitivities.
Hardi-har-har-har.
Is it acceptable for female students to object to being called coeds, or is that an appropriate target for “humor” also? Those uppity women. How dare they.
Seems like the sensitive ones these days are those that so easily bristle at the thought of having to learn a new pronoun or two. Even old, conservative dudes should be able to learn and adjust to societal advancements that more accurately reflect the population as a whole. It’s not the 1950s.
Sexual harassment is rampant. Any industry, any age, any level in an organization. It’s rampant.
Hopefully it won’t be, soon.
It has nothing to do with the challenge of “learning a new pronoun”. If you say, “I am hiring a lawyer”, gender is usually irrelevant. If you say, “I am hiring an actor”, gender IS relevant because you are casting a person for a role. Saying “actress” is simpler than “female actor”, unless, of course, you feel the need to make a political point. In my experience, actresses do not take offense at the word actress, understanding it is the famale form of actor. A “doctress” would take offense because that form implies that even with years of training a woman is still not a doctor.
I see that Kate Winslet has condemned Weinstein. She is starring in an upcoming Woody Allen movie.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-does-a-typical-sexual-harasser-look-like-we-dont-know/ also indicates that we do not really know that much about harassers.
