<p>Hmm. My school district has a website with only a list of my school’s “notable alumni” (a football player and my mom’s high school boyfriend) and the web pages of each of the schools. But my city’s got a page. In 2000, 7.7% of the population was under the poverty line (about 1/4 of students in the district are on reduced/free lunches); the median income for a family was $49,531; and a little over a fifth of the population was over 65 years of age. “The racial makeup of the city was 92.66% White, 0.32% African American, 1.14% Native American, 1.64% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.15% of the population.” (At Link Crew frosh orientation, some Link Leaders joked that they should tell the freshmen that one of the things they should know about high school life is “There are five black students at AHS, and you are not one of them.” <em>half-amused, half-pained cringe</em>)</p>

<p>Our Hispanic population is a lot more than just 4% now, though. A lot has changed in the last six years.</p>

The per capita income for the city was $16,823. 19.1% of the population and 15.9% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

<p>And my family’s income is WAY higher than my town’s median income (we don’t actually live within the city limits, but whatever). Eh, I knew my town wasn’t upper-middle or anything, but I really had no idea it was that low.</p>
