Help me decide- UNC [$40k for 4 years] vs UofSC [<$10k for 4 years] vs BS/MD [$80k for 4 years]

We are in a similar situation but we don’t have IVY admission , we are on wait list of 4 T20 colleges , other options are
1.UNC less thank 10k COA per year ( due to merit awards ), guaranteed research and admission to public health or biostatistics. UNC admissions are weird some they have direct admission like Biology , Neuro , chem majors, rest they have assured programs meaning they don’t have to apply again if they meet the pre req in first and second year , finally few especially CS , which has to be applied in the second year . Those who did not get assured acceptances like nutrition needs to apply in the second year. CS has no assured acceptance as far as I know. UNC has weed out classes and it’s chemistry dept is know for grade deflation and not inflated … and pre med most end up taking Gap years
2. UOFSC free COA due to top scholar , it gives 12k money for research and honors college is supposed to have good Med acceptance rates
3. We have one BS/MD but itis the most expensive COA 25 K around , but is more of assurance program which needs interview
Apart from above we have other private college T30 colleges which are going to cost 80K to 100k Per year and we are not considering them at all

As the Med colleges are going to cost 400K + , the suggestion was to minimize the costs and get good GPA and MCAT score … not sure if the college prestige helps and any suggestions are welcome

MOD NOTE
In summary:
UNC - 40k for total 4 years
UOFSC - 10 k or less for 4 years , ( and 12 * 4 = 48 k grant for Research , it is not expense )
BS MD - 20 * 4 = 80k or less for total of 4 years
All affordable, but difficult to choose for pre med

For clarity, could you just list the colleges you are considering and their net costs. Just those things, please.

No abbreviations

UNC - 40k for total 4 years
UOFSC - 10 k or less for 4 years , ( and 12 * 4 = 48 k grant for Research , it is not expense )
BS MD - 20 * 4 = 80k or less for total of 4 years
All affordable, but difficult to choose for pre med

For the BS/MD program, would the student consider the school if not in the BS/MD program?

For the BS/MD program, what kind of conditions are there to advance to the MD part (you mention interview, but also what about college GPA, MCAT score, expected pre-med extracurriculars, etc.?)?

510 MCAT , 3.7 GPA and research, Clinical experience 50 hours per year , volunteer 50 hours , leadership role, manageable . It has interview also, so assurance mostly.
Will not consider this school without BS MD , as the honors school is small and will not get give true undergrad experience . The chances of getting into MD is high though and this is the only option we have , and will not need GAP years

UNC CH for $10,000 is my vote.

South Carolina would be fine too.

Students can get accepted to medical schools from just about every four year college…arts conservatives excluded.

The average age for first year medical school students is mid twenties. Many take one or more years after undergrad before even applying to medical school.

Re: the BS/MD program…it’s very costly for all the years. Plus your student will be going to a school they wouldn’t otherwise choose.

I would suggest an undergrad your student loves. Life is too short to give this up.

How is medical school being funded? It will be very pricey per year and is usually funded with loans loans and more loans

My vote is either UNC or the U of SC- whichever one the student likes better.

We have funds covered mostly but cannot afford 4 years like Emory undergrad + 4 year med.

@momsearcheng your thoughts?

All of the undergrad schools you have listed are not the same cost as Emory. They are far less costly…by a LOT. USouth Carolina is practically free from what you wrote. UNC CH is $10,000 a year (which is quite a great price for that college).

Medical schools can cost $100,000 a year…

I think the BS MD is about $20,000 a year for the undergrad part? Is that right? If it’s the one I think it is, the medical school one is very costly.

Your student sounds like she is very bright and motivated to do well. She certainly can get the courses and experiences she needs at either North Carolina or South Carolina.

At either of these two colleges, she could take the MCAT her junior year and have all prerequisite courses done by the end of her junior year…and apply to start the fall after she receives her bachelors.

OR…she could do what many medical school applicants do now…take a year or so after undergrad to prep and take the MCAT, and beef up their ECs for medical school applicants. Really, this isn’t a bad idea and one worthy of discussion, in my opinion.

These are not easy requirements. Still interview. Yes no GAP year and 20×4 plus medical school… not bad.

Emory is the BS/MD school?

I personally think UOFSC is a better option. You need highest GPA possible and lowest cost possible. Weed out classes are pain everywhere. Org Chem is not a joke. If school is famous for making classes almost not passable (I know couple) I would stay away.
Assurance programs often tired to physical science majors. I.e. they do not want Math, CS, or Music majors. They want heavy science majors in addition to premed required classes.

Can you name BS/MD school?
I think people are right. Your student needs to like undergraduate program and enjoy time there. My DD in BS/DO no MCAT and lower GPA requirements. She said she would not commit to 4 years of misery and then 4 years of medical schools and 2-3 years of residencies. She said “I want good undergraduate experience.”

No, it was the t30 school that gave the admission and has the best pre med program per my kid opinion , not a dream school , but comes close to that

So you understand. If your kid will have all listed requirements: 510 MCAT, 3.7 GPA and all recearch, volunteering etc she will be accepted to MD school with GAP or without GAP. In my opinion too many strings attached.

FAU, got into LECOM DO with no mcat , but was not considering that

Why not LECOM? My DD at Rhodes with LECOM and having very good time. It is not easy. Still needs science major. But no MCAT, no volunteering (she still will do it), no killing yourself with B+…
Mental health is a big issue…

What is a “best premed program” and why does your kid say that? She can take the courses for med school applicants anywhere.

USF was the Undergraduate choice that was not available and does not want to go to the colleges like Washington and Jefferson , we did not apply to Rhodes as we are not aware of that school
