High School Class of 2013

I never had conflicts with my schedule, but i’m not trying to jinx it now haha… I’m currently sitting in a hotel room with the door locked, with two locks, the window locked, and the curtains closed completely because of the neighborhood this college i’m touring tomorrow is in lol. But on the other hand, JMU was amazing :)

@Federico14 Dang, what college??

^Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmittsburg, Maryland… Turns out, me and my mom went to the hotel left of the college instead of to the right. They said they advise students not to go that way unless they are with a group in a car… Woops :P

It’s amazing how fast your college list starts shrinking once you realize what you can actually afford.

Thankfully, we qualify for a lot of financial aid and if I go to an Ivy (unrealistic) or a school like Duke or Brandeis, I’d be covered. I just got this huge book of college scholarships, so if I don’t, I’ll be applying for all of the ones I qualify for.

Unfortunately, middle class families kind of get screwed when it comes to financial aid. My parents make enough so that we don’t qualify for a ton of aid but not enough where paying $50,000 a year for 4 years is financially feasible. So I’m basically limited to state schools (luckily new york has some good ones), OOS public schools that have lowish OOS sticker prices and have good automatic merit-based scholarships, and the few private schools that give good aid to middle class families. We also have to play it on the safe side with money in case I need to or choose to go to graduate school.

What schools do you guys plan to apply to?

3 in DC
1 in New York
1 in Chicago
1 in Abu Dhabi
1 in Shanghai

About 8 that are reaches (excessive I know, but I like the schools): 5 Ivies, Duke, Brandeis, and NYU. I know NYU and Brandeis would be easy to get into for most on here, but because of surgeries sophomore year, my grades weren’t that great and I had a Brown admissions officer basically tell me that it doesn’t matter that I have health issues.

My matches/safeties are Penn State, UMass, and Pace. I’m considering applying to a CUNY because it’d be a safety too (according to the stats in the PR book with the “Best” colleges). But I don’t understand why they have low acceptance rates (30-40%) and low-ish standards?

(I live in FL, but as you can see, I want to be nowhere near there.)

You can’t go to a CUNY that’s social suicide!

Why? .

CUNYS are usually mentioned in the same sentence as dropout, idiot, fat washed up loser, and anyone ranked last in their class (or in my school, the bottom 95% :D).

And not like, “CUNY graduates are not idiots.”

A CUNY admissions person came to my school once and literally said this: “If Harvard is outstanding, then we’re excellent.”

I laughed as loud as I possibly could. She said that her particular CUNY was in the same tier as Harvard. 1. it isn’t and 2. the tier that Harvard is in has like 34978639164 schools in it.

Good to know then.

I still don’t understand why they have low acceptance rates and are mentioned in “The Best 376 Colleges,” if they’re so bad.

But then again, I don’t understand why FSU is either. Maybe the PR just has bad ideas on what a good school is.

You define low acceptance rate. Baruch is like 22% while CSI is famously 100%. Probably because a lot of people live in New York and they’re cheap. You can’t take everyone.

Brooklyn=30%
Hunter=25%
Queens=30%
Baruch=23%

Those are relatively low.

Regardless, an acceptance rate shouldn’t be the reason you want to go to a school. It shouldn’t even be in your mind, unless you’re using it to justify NOT applying there.

You have to consider the kids who apply to these schools. Most public schools in NYC are very sub-par in terms of academics. I think the average SAT score for NYC public schools was like in the 1300-1450 range or something like that. And tons of these kids apply to CUNYs even though they really don’t stand much of a chance. My school even had some kids like this apply to CUNYs, kids with SAT scores below 1400 who are barely even passing their classes. But the kids who have better scores and grades are accepted. My school’s naviance statistics can back this up.

I know. I was going to apply and use it as a safety but then I saw the acceptance rates. If I’m going to consider a school a safety, I want to make sure I have a good chance.

Thanks to the person who answered my question about the acceptance rate thing! =)

My school requires AB before you can take BC. It’s a weird requirement, but I’m kinda happy it works that way since BC won’t be too bad if I know a good bit of the material already.

After getting forced into AP Lit I was like I’m going to die, but then I asked my friend who goes to the smartest school in this neck of the woods and he said he’s taking 5 APs next year and I’m like, well his classes are probably harder too so it shouldn’t be THAT bad.
