High School Class of 2015

Help the Homeschooler out. What the heck is a grading period.

Haha kypdurron, in my school, there are four marking periods in a year. It’s like a quarter system. At the end of each marking period, a letter grade is given to each person in each subject. Then at the end of the school year, a letter grade is given to each subject.

@kypdurron…grading period is a time period in which grades are given for that amount of time…and then it resets and grades go back to 100. For example:

We have 4 9-week periods. At the end of each 9-weeks, we receive a final grade. After the 2nd 9-weeks, it
s the end of the semester, and the first two 9-weeks grades are calculated and our semester grade is what colleges look at and what goes into our GPA. Sorry if that wasn
t a good explanation.

ahh, thanks.
It seems just like how we do it with Quarters and Semsters. Thanks

Lets talk about colleges

What are three top colleges on your Radar?

kypdurron, I have a question for * you*…how does homeschooling work? Do you have a set start/finish time? Do you eat lunch whenever? Do you have homework? Do you have Christmas/Thanksgiving break? I don
t know any home schooled kids. Sorry for all the ?
s.

Let
s see…colleges. Well, I
m kinda torn right now. A lot will come down on visits. Is it alright if I put 6, because these are the ones as of right now I`m definitely applying to.

(In order, greatest want to least… tied)

1) U.S Naval Academy
2) VMI
3) Northwestern University
4) Virginia Tech
5) Texas A&M (Tied with VT)
6) Ohio University

I like OU, but at the others, they have the military commissioning program I want, but OU only has Army, not Marines. But I like OU because they have an excellent Journalism school.

Schools on my radar in no particular order
Stanford
Upenn
Berkeley
UCSD
UCSB

Inspired by looking at the C/O 2014 thread, 10. My cryptic answer, so I`m not doing anything wrong. 10. Proved my friends wrong who all said 6, but then only found 8, but someone else said 12, and now 2014 says 12.

Colleges (I’m from NC btw)

  1. Johns Hopkins University
  2. Columbia University
  3. Georgetown University
  4. Lehigh University
  5. Elon University
  6. UNC Chapel Hill

Major choices:
Double major: Pre med and medical Science
Double major: Pre Med and Cell biology
Double major: Medical Science and Bioengineering

AlexHarper, I read a story of a guy who had a * full ride* to Johns Hopkins and then didn
t want to leave his girlfriend, and was scared or whatever to go to college (not scared, but…I don
t know) so he ended up withdrawing and then working at his local dollar store. And then his girlfriend dumped him. That was kind of random, but whenever I see that mentioned, I always think of that.

My mom went to Columbia for grad school, and looked at Georgetown for undergrad.

Ah, majors:

If Northwestern, VT, or OU: Journalism and Political Science
A&M, USNA, VMI: Political Science

So if a religion is a belief…then atheism is either both or neither. Gosh. Stumper.

FULL RIDE??? OH MAN, I WOULD’VE SMACKED SOME SENSE INTO THAT BOY.

I love columbia, it would be so cool to get in, but if I don’t its totally fine. Your mom must be really smart.

My parents both went to UNC Chapel Hill. My dad got into Princeton and Yale but could not afford it at the time. My mom went to Duke for med school and my dad went to grad school at Princeton.

I’m a girl

I realize how competitive these colleges are, but I’m about 100% sure I can get into UNC Chapel hill. It is my safety, along with Elon University. Its funny because you are telling me how difficult my colleges are to get accepted, yet, you listed UVA , Harvard, Naval academy and Pepperdine, which are hard to get into as well. Harder than my colleges listed.

And um, I don’t think I would consider Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and NYU safety schools…

I`m a girl. Does it matter though? Just curious there.

  • Yes, hard for some. VT is a safety, and you cant say it isnt because you wrote it down for you as a safety. In state. VMI actually isnt as hard to get into as most think it is. About a 50% acceptance rate, I think, and again, in-state. Seriously, whats with the attitude about APs? No one said we were taking "loooooads". Really, it seems like you just put down everyone else. Yes, I realize I have a pretty heavy list of schools there, but I dont appreciate the sarcasm, and Im sure AlexHarper doesnt either, because UNC is an in-state too for her. Really, all youve done is put down others, especially me, and I dont understand what Ive done to deserve it. Its not like I said, "Look at me. Im taking an AP class (note, only 1!) and am getting great grades!" I`ve said nothing of the sort.

At any rate, I can apply ED to half of them, and if I don
t get in, apply to some more safety schools regular decision. And with all due respect, how
s ND, Vanderbilt, and NYU safeties?

@AlexHarper, Yeah, my mom
s pretty smart, and she did Social Work at Columbia. She said she didn
t like it as much as she would`ve for undergrad because she lived off-campus, so she kinda felt disconnected from the school and whatnot, like not as involved, especially since it was a huge city. But she enjoyed it other than that! She had a great internship, I know.

And yeah, full ride! Ridiculous.

  •
Colleges:
    Texas A&M
    Ave Maria University
    University of Dallas
U of Alabama (Full ride NMF plus awesome AP credit)
    Penn
    Hillsdale
    Majors:
    Econ/Finance/Applied Math/ Theology
