^Idk how it is in UK but in the US most people who take gap years dont go back.

I wouldn’t personally want one though. I’m already kinda old in comparison to most people in c/o 15 (Dec 1 1996), so I feel like I’m already getting out late in comparison to all of the people that’ll be graduating HS at age 17.

@goodnoodle…In the UK it
s pretty normal to take a gap year. And I don
t know what it
s like in CA, but there
s not a ton of people graduating at 17 here…I mean, the way school birthday dates cut off is usually September/October, I think. So only those who have birthdays after the beginning of June on through to Sept, and maybe a little of Oct are going to graduate at 17. But I agree, in the U.S, we mainly have permanent gap years ;)

@UKgirl, nope, like I said, not very popular in the U.S, and I see no point in it…I mean, I don
t know what I
d do for a year, so it`s sort of a waste of time.

and goodnoodle, aw, it
s almost your birthday! Gee, you
re kinda old for the C/O 2015, I admit it. May 27 right here not real exciting.

To that thing about not getting a degree I would have to decline. Even though my mom, coming from a poor family, got a well paying job right out of highschool and has had the same job her whole life (well, companies were bought and sold but still basically the same). But if an opportunity came to me like that, if I ever lost it it would be alot harder to get a new job with no degree and it would be even harder to try and go to the colleges I’m aiming at now… :(

EDIT: I’m almost 17… Should be a junior but… :\ it happened a long time ago in elementary school.

I know a kid who was in our grade and then got held back in Kindergarten for a variety of things, I guess, but I was under the impression it was namely because of nap time various issues. So that set the bar pretty low. So as long as you didn’t get held back because of nap time, you’re good.

^ I just realized that sounded shallow. I was kidding, for the record. But I did know someone who was held back in kindergarten, don
t know what for. Heck, I stuck a red crayon in my ear in kindergarten, so I certainly didn
t win the prize for most intellectual or anything. I am being serious, yes, I got a red crayon stuck in my ear.

I’m an August baby, so it makes more sense for me
Also I have a lot of travelling/language learning/saving money to do in a year, so it would really suit me well.
How is it a gap year if it isn’t a year between school and college? I’ll make sure I have a place at a college before I take a year off, but you can normally get a deferred place, and from a bit of research US unis were encouraging this as well?!?
I wouldn’t say it’s common here but certainly not uncommon. Also switching grades is very unusual, even if you have an ‘extreme’ birthday. The cut off dates are there for a reason. In my class of 150, two girls have been moved up a year and that’s it.

Cut-off dates are weird, no way around that fact about schools. There’s the year, and the school year. I’m born early in the year as far as the 12 month system goes, but as far as the school system, middle-late. Aye, aye, aye.

UKgirl, You say,

Wait, are we on the same page here? What`s your definition of a gap year? Mine is “Taking a year off between high school and college. Ex: Graduate HS in 2015, start college in 2016”. Correct? Or no?

Yep, that’s what I meant, but you said a lot of gap year students don’t go back, which isn’t really a gap year then…
I guess cut off dates are weird, here they’re just septmeber 1st, and most schools start between the 1st and the 7th :)

Alot of people in the states who plan to take a year off don’t ever go back. Like 70%… Plus it’s supposed to be harder to get in after you’ve taken time off (colleges sometimes have some negative connotation with you having to take a year off before you’re ready for college)

Can you not apply for deferred places then? Particularly if you explain it as a way to further your studies in your free time (I want to go do something history related in Germany while learning the language then work in spain for a bit)

Not usually, I think, as far as I know. When you apply, you apply for that school year. Like how the C/O 2013 is applying for schools for that following school year. They can
t really apply for college class of 2018 until 2014, get it, or am I not making sense? US of A isn
t real big on that, don
t know why. Funny how there are little differences like that between the cultures, huh? But I guess some colleges will let you defer, or maybe if they had something bad happen to them, like an illness, and they couldn
t go to school.

Haha I don’t speak any German atm, but if the US turns out to be too expensive, I’ll go there for uni, in which case I really will need the gap year to learn German! I want to any way
Here you do have the option of deferred places, but only for non-maths/science related courses because people forget too much maths in a year I want to do history so it’s fine, but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that you can do it in the US… maybe I was getting mixed up :/

Haha, I don’t know much German. Would have loved to take it in school, but we only have Spanish and French, and I figured Spanish would be more useful, me llamo espanol. But I hear German universities are good, aren’t they supposed to be? You’re probably more up to date on Europe than I am. What American colleges are you considering?

I’m actually supposed to be in 9th grade right now because in China, the rules were different;when I came here, it turns out I was allowed to be in 10th instead of being held back. However, I think they changed the rules again sometime after. It’s actually pretty confusing ahaha. Oh and whenever I do something stupid, my parents always say, “See this is why you were supposed to be in 9th grade” xD.

(I know this is pretty random and I should be posting this on a medical forum, but I found out today that I have an anxiety disorder. Really sucks :/)
