High school class of 2016

I have such a long and top heavy list.

Major: Business

Dream School: UPenn Wharton
Reaches: Yale, Stanford, Chicago, MIT Sloan, Harvard
Lower Reaches: Duke, Northwestern, Georgetown
Matchish: UCB, NYU
Saftey: Rutgers

Obviously I need help finding matches and safties.

@crimes How the heck is Northwestern a match for anyone (not trying to offend you, just looking at current admissions rate)???

I don’t actually think it is, haha
Not offended in the slightest- just kind of ignorant when I wrote that.

Not your fault, it’s more believable than saying Harvard or Stanford’s a match.

I doubt anybody would actually say that and mean it, though.

Can say it and dream it. -sob-

For those of us who are Californians, which UCs are you planning to apply to?

@HeyItsNick‌

None lol, maybe UCSD and UCLA. Tbh, I don’t really like the California environment, but my top school (CMC) has good enough other qualities to trump the environment. UCB sounds like extreme hard work in college and too many Asians (I’m Asian and its just a personal preference, no offence to other Asians.)

How about you?

@Woandering

UCs are going to be the main schools that I’m applying to. My freshman year was really bad so while I’m still going to apply to Georgetown and maybe Tufts, UCs are probably the safest bet due to their A-G GPAs. My UC list at the moment is UCB, UCSD, UC Davis and UCLA. I’m wanting to do political science so UCB and UCSD are my top two although Georgetown would be the best haha

@HeyItsNick‌

UCs are really great though, especially internationally. I guarantee you Chinese will have heard of Cal but not Georgetown.

You sound knowledgeable about the UCs, so can you explain the A-G GPA? I know what the course requirements are, but from your previous comment, it sounds like they only look at those courses?

@woandering

You are completely right, UCSD has a really good undergrad International Relations program that focuses on Pacific affairs. The graduate program is actually the only professional school to focus directly on Pacific-American affairs.

From what I understand from presentations and discussions with UC representatives that have visited my school, the UC system calculates the GPA of their freshman candidates using their A-G courses from the summer after 9th grade to the summer after 11th grade. Classes such as PE are not included in their calculation. When you fill out the application, you have to include all your classes (including 9th grade) but I was told by the UCB rep that they put little consideration into those courses and it was only used to examine upward/downward trends, course rigor, etc.

@HeyItsNick‌
Yay, my bad grades in theology won’t drag me down then.

Do you happen to know which of the UCs are good for Economics? (Excluding Berkeley).

Hey could anyone give me a rundown of all the UCs and what each school is most known for? I’m from the East Coast and I would love to go to California but I’m not sure how realistic it is.

@Woandering

From what I understand, UCLA and UCSD are second and third, respectively, after UCB for economics. I’d look into this more, however, because my knowledge of economic programs at UCs are very limited.

@Jamanda

Here is a post for you: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-general/793303-comparing-uc-schools.html

I’d hate to be an international applicant tbh

@TeamRocketGrunt‌

Why?

Also, do you mean international-international or Americans living overseas?

It’d suck to be one of the tens of thousands of Asians competing for the 100 or so spots in the Ivies.

Applying to about 7 summer programs…Applications are stressful. How’s everyone’s junior year so far?

My Junior Year’s been pretty good actually. I’ve always heard about how hard it is but for now anyway it looks like I’m doing fine. I’ll probably take back what I just said once the AP tests in May comes lol.

My junior year has been going ok expect for Calc AB. Actually I can’t say that anymore because first marking period, i was at a B- and now A-, so I’m pretty happy
