High School Class of 2017

@realtwinkie I’m in the same boat.

@coffeeaddicted Congrats on that score! Any tips for us trying to get that score as well? I’m struggling to raise my score.

Do any of you know when we start to look and apply for scholarships? I’ve been looking but most of them require financial need, something I don’t qualify for.

@tigerman333 I believe some state colleges automatically give generous scholarships if you score high enough sat/act scores

First time taking ACTs and hoping for a 36! I think I can do it, based on my practice test scores, however the only thing I’;m scared about it the essay. I’m sooo scared I won’t get above a 30.

@wanderlustgal yea do you know any good places for how to write a great essay on the ACT?

The ACT essay isn’t too bad as long as you follow a certain structure like:
introduction
why viewpoint 1 is wrong/correct
same for viewpoint 2
why viewpoint 3 is the most correct
counterargument for viewpoint 3
conclusion/look into the future

@tigerman333 I didn’t do anything besides practice tests, but I used the Barron’s ones which were really intense and really helped with my time management. Really the only big challenge with the ACT (if you know the rules of English, mathematics up to precalc, and middle school-basics of science) is time management.

I’m doing the feb act! Took it in october and effed up on everything but english and writing. Hoping for 32, if I hit that, I’ll be done…if i bring up my math science and reading by 2 points I can get it…sigh. I HATE THE ACT MATH. SO MUCH. I ALSO HATE SAT MATH. I HATE ALL MATH. Does anyone have any tips on act math? I can get an a in Ap Calc but can’t do act math to save my life

To those of you who celebrate Christmas, merry Christmas!

@sprights as with all other sections of the ACT, just practice a lot :stuck_out_tongue: so you get faster and more accurate

For the essay, there are a few CC guides on the new 36 scale essay, i’ll look thru and try to find them. Although prepscholar also has a nice article as well!

As for ACT Math, I have heard nothing but good about Richard F. Corn’s ACT math book (my friend got it for me for christmas, and so far i love it! concise to ACT math, but still makes you think from the point of view of the standardized tests.

And, as with any section ever, I always recommend PrepScholar’s Free “Ultimate” ACT Guides! Looked at their science one, it was great!

Okay, here’s a resolution: I will finish all of my college apps by Halloween next year, and then proceed to forget about college for the next five months to the best of my abilities.

dream colleges anyone?

I’d love to go to Harvey Mudd or UChicago or MIT… lol reaches much?

Virginia Tech, I just really like the campus and all of the courses it offers.

Brown! I’m not getting my hopes up, but I visited the campus a couple months ago and I fell in love.

Columbia lol. Trying not to be too emotionally invested in it, but damn, it’s such an awesome place. I’m scared for next year guys :frowning:

@neoking literally same. I know that the appropriate time to fall in love with a college is after you’ve been accepting, to avoid that probably-inevitable disappointment at rejection, but it’s hard to not imagine yourself thriving at some of these schools.

yeah, it;s really sad when you fall in love with an ivy, sighs

Columbia which I’ll probably ED but I’ll try to avoid getting too attached to it.
