Just gotta write the Penn supplement, review everything, and submit Cornell, Chicago and Penn. Then I’ll be done
@Faultystart that’s the most relatable thing I’ve ever read
i AM DONE YES I AM LIVING
(time to write like 15 scholarship essays in the span of 2 days, lovely)
@Faultystart you got this!
Anyone here applying to Wharton?
@Faultystart LOL i feel man
Literally told my friends I only have 5 more apps to go by Jan and they’re like uhhhh…
woot woot!!! almost (?) done with harvard; I have learned writing a letter to a roommate is very easy and you can quickly start writing too much…
I spent all day cutting down words on that essay. @Faultystart
@math3matical I started it like a few hours ago and have ALMOST 600 WORDS YIKES but it really shows me???
i’m trying to debate whether i should leave it how it is now (which is p similar to how i type messages here) which def showcases my personality more, or if i should try to neaten it up a bit (and loose the charm of it)
bc in all honesty, i would 110% write my roommate a letter like that (or send them an email) and i want my essay to reflect that
but in my roommate letter i actually use punctuation so that’s a step up from this (and i dont curse too whoop whoop)
@Faultystart Well… is there not a 250 word max? I am not quite sure what you mean by “leave it at 600 words”.
I do not doubt that it portrays your character well and is a solid essay, but you also have to adhere to the word-count.
Perhaps you could use the full letter for another application?
@math3matical are you talking about the stanford (or a different school) roommate essay? that one does have a limit, but harvard has an optional essay where you can write anything (with just a 500kb file limit) so I choose the roommate essay for harvard
it’s gonna be tough to whittle it down to 250 words for stanford though
@Faultystart Ahh, yes. I see now. Yup, definitely 250 for Stanford. Hey, but at least your masterpiece can be sent to Harvard!
To cut my letter down, I really had to think about what NEEDED to be covered in the letter, THEN scatter some witty jokes and humor around the main points. The wittiness really has to be concise though… good luck.
@math3matical ohhh that’s good advice, thank you! and good luck with the rest(?) of your apps and admissions!
Guys, I’m feeling immensely stupid. I made two mistakes on apps; does anyone have advice?
- I copied and pasted an essay about "why do want to major in x?". In the first school, I want to do neuroscience and in the second I want to major in cognitive science. But for the second school I wrote 'neuroscience' in the essay twice and cognitive science only once. btw, the second school has a neuroscience major as well. What should I do?
- For all my colleges on the common app, I copied and pasted essays from Microsoft Word. Apparently once I pasted them the common app took away my indents and spaces between paragraphs.
Am I screwed? Can/should I contact the schools?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
First off, these are not terribly huge mistakes, so breathe easy.
-
I am not sure of how big a difference there is between neuroscience and cognitive science, but if you feel it is a significantly different discipline you could give the school a call and let them know what you meant (calling never hurts).
-
The indents go away to everyones I believe. So this is fine.
@greenteen17 hmm that’s probably something you should contact the school about (the first thing).
regarding your second area of concern, you should be fine! formatting issues happen all the time, and i’m sure application readers take that into consideration.
oh man i’m so pumped to finish my jan 01 applications! just need to bang out uva, edit northwestern, and submit them (and harvard) before i can enjoy new years! (and then try to finish uchicago and stanford haha)
@Faultystart All I have to do is fill out my activities list for MIT then Jan 01 is complete! (Other than my recommenders submitting their recommendations late…)
Then all I have to do is write two more short essays.
“The final countdown…dundundundun…dundundundundun…”
Congrats to everyone for making it this far!
Just submitted Cornell. I gotta do Penn and then I’m finally done
yay! may the new year for all of you be filled with new firsts (like going to college) and a ton of blessings + good luck to everyone still working; may you come in clutch with the rest of your apps
