@SockandBoots Man, tell them over and over that it is the number one institution in the world for STEM fields. Show them the US News overall university rankings, then show them the rankings for engineering, for physics, for math, etc. Type things in like “best university IN THE WORLD for ____ engineering”, things like that. Show them the type of alumni that come from MIT. Show them descriptions of the research going on there, the amazing labs they’ve constructed. Show them that even if they think MIT is “just a name”, that name is one of the most powerful words a job applicant can utter. “I graduated from MIT”.
Unless you literally can’t pay for it, you’ve gotta go man! Well done, and good luck mate!
Maybe also talk about the campus environment at MIT vs. your local state school, what is better at MIT than your state school. Part of the equation is simply getting your degree in the first place. For example, would you feel drowned out at a local state school (a lot of people, less time with professors, etc.)? Does MIT offer you internships or research opportunities that your local state school would not?
If you know anybody that graduated from MIT (or any other comparable school), they could also help? My mom was skeptical of LACs until she heard from a teacher that attended a LAC herself and now my mom is pretty happy with the idea of me attending one.
Finally, I would suggest to do your research and have your information ready before you finally try to convince them. Be specific with your evidence, too. Also, it’s a good idea to stay calm if they disagree especially at first. It’s difficult when it’s something that means so much to you, but it would definitely help your case if you can present it in a cool, mature manner. They need to see the evidence, since they again only see it as a name rather than an exceptional opportunity.
Congrats on the acceptance, either way! It has to be quite an honor to even be accepted there.
@SockandBoots first of all congrats!!! that’s amazing!!!
in response to your question: us news rankings (or whatever it’s called). if they can actually see that it’s ranked as one of the best universities in the world–that it’ll open tons of doors–hopefully it’ll change their minds. good luck!
So far I’ve been admitted to all of the unis I applied to (13/13) and I hope that streak continues!!
Honestly, this is quite unreal for me and my family. Being an international student, I had never expected this to happen. All those low acceptance rates and high SAT/ACT scores had filled me up with dread but look where I am now!!
I would love to go to UCLA, Berkeley or NYU BUT THEY ARE TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE
By the way, do you guys think it is better to attend a cheaper school (about $10-25k cheaper per year) than taking substantial financial strain (or debt) at any of these 3 schools?
The cheaper schools in question are UMD College Park, UMN Twin Cities and UW Seattle. I’m majoring in Economics FYI.
@SetuShah10 Oh yaas, just go to UMD-CP and we can be gym buddies lol
Congrats to everyone on all these delightful acceptances! Your success is not accidental; it is rather well deserved. For those of you that are facing rejections, just remember that at the end, you’ll only attend one university. So be positive and make wherever you end up the best highlight of your education. Also, to those of you waiting for ivy day, good lucc (yes I put a double c lol)! I hope that all of you get admitted to your top schools. In case you don’t get admitted to your top school, just remember that your top school isn’t necessarily the best one for you, so just keep your head up and try to excel wherever you end up.
Hey friends! On Friday I was waitlisted at Colby, rejected from Northwestern and rejected from Swarthmore (in that order) so I felt like a failure. BUT I GOT INTO POMONA SO HA!!
As of today, I’ve gotten half of my decisions back (I applied to 8 and two were safeties), and so far it’s 3 acceptances and 1 waitlist! I hope the rest go just as well (although I doubt it because they’re more competitive than the first 4 rip)
Got admitted to:
Northwestern (!!!)
Boston University
Emerson
Waitlisted At: UCLA,
Waiting On:
Occidental
NYU
USC
UMich
American
GWU
Brown
I need some aid - I got into the Emerson Honors Program (24k a year) and I’m still waiting on my Northwestern aid package bc tbh if I can’t get enough aid, Northwestern is gone for me
@Cece0499 nice, i initially got an acceptance to medill and i’ll likely be doing the double major program w/ Weinberg (def in poli sci, and possibly a minor in gender + sexuality)
