High School Class of 2018

That is so cool. I wish our school had something like that. @ak2018
Tomorrow is the Science Olympiad regionals. I am so nervous. Wish me luck!

Thanks. It is really. @Kelvin82 I wish we had the science Olympiad program at our school. Also, good luck!

@Kelvin82 MTSU? The Division B team I help out with is there today. I’m not going :frowning: because my mom didn’t want to drive me anywhere at 6:25 AM, especially since I’m not competing cries

@Kelvin82 what events are you in?
My school competes but we never get past the first competition (states I guess?)
I prepared for A&P and cell biology this year but they were both cancelled - cell bio before the competition and A&P I’m not sure what happened but they cancelled it the day of the competition

@Lbelle43 Your Science Olympiad sounds so cool. Ours is just robotics and it’s really boring so I quit. However, I’m doing a side research project for Google Science Fair so hopefully, it’ll work out haha

Well, I just got back from my middle school track and my time was 6 seconds slower than my time before time last week. :(( Then again, I did eat right before I went to the track, so that might be it. After that, I just played some football with some really nice people who had graduated or were in college. That was probably the highlight of my day. :))

@averagebean I’ve always wanted to compete in the Google Science Fair, but felt like I could never make a project. I mean, I’ve never been in a science fair and I feel like I could never come up with anything anyway. If I was in the Google Science Fair, I’d probably work on Robotics, as it is my favorite thing in the world, but I feel like I couldn’t come up with a revolutionary idea. Maybe I’ll talk to my Engineering teacher at our school to see if we could do the Science Fair next year as part of the class. Any advice?

@ak2018 It’s a global online competition so you register on the website. Just take a look at their site and they should give you a run down on what you need and how to enter. I personally am working with my partner and have a mentor (a professor at the university) and I go to the lab 3 times a week to do experiments. I’m working on a serum. This is completely separate from school.

Oh @averagebean I just checked the website and it looks pretty cool and I like the concept. I just wouldn’t know to start really. Like getting a partner, buying the supplies, I would need, this would like be pretty expensive for me. It’s unlikely that I’ll be able to find a mentor that could work with me. Especially one at a university. My Engineering teacher barely has any time outside of Robotics club. I would also still need an idea. I think it’s just that I’m having a creativity block or something. I want to do something that could potentially change an aspect of the world, but I really don’t know where to start.

@ak2018 That’s the whole aspect of the project. Knowing what you’re doing. Otherwise, don’t even bother to enter unless you already have a key idea down and have begun researching and finding a mentor. I’m not entering in the 2016 selection due to a late project switch and finding the right professor. I personally would go against asking a high school teacher for help and instead, seek someone who is more specialized in that field. You don’t need a partner but I chose to have one because that way, research can be easier and faster leaving more time for trials. The university provided us the lab and virus samples so all in all, my partner and I did not spend much money.

Gonna pitch in here. @ak2018 , the website itself has a lot of resources on idea generation.
You don’t even have to enter this year! Write down ideas, take some classes, see what happens. Identifying problems in your community could be a good start.

I just submitted my first summer program app today! Keeping my fingers crossed

@OMPursuit @averagebean Thanks! I think I really should take a class or two on Robotics first. I mean I technically have 3 more years to enter and compete before I’m 19, which is the age limit. I’m going to be taking a Robotics class next year.

@ak2018 The limit is actually 18 so that leaves you 2 years to get researching and finding things. Trial and error will be your best friend. Do prepare for abrupt project switches especially within the first few months. I’m still on my research stage due to a switch (unfortunately) but hopefully, this serum will work out aha.

@averagebean Yes, I know that the limit is 18. But my 18th birthday will be May 10, 2018. I will be allowed to enter for three years as the rules say if I turn 19 before the end of the competition, I can still enter.

Did you guys know that certain colleges super score your ACT and SAT scores? Some of you might have, but some might not. Apparently, my first choice college, Virginia Tech, superscores the ACT English and Math sections and converts them to SAT scores. I already know I’m going to do really well on the ACT, as it usually favors and attracts more STEM students. The SAT, I heard, leans more towards humanities and arts kids. The ACT also has an easier Math section. I can’t wait to take it! This is definitely going to be my test! Any have any advice on how to study for it? I plan to get at least a 33.

Also, I know it’s early, but is anyone joining the S.N.H.C. tonight?

@ak2018 I’m always up for the SNHC.

@ak2018 meeeeee

I seriously don’t know how you guys get all this homework
