High School Class of 2018

@ak2018 I’ve lurked for quite a while. I’ve seen mos tof what happens on here. I haven’t seen much of the campus since I’m not really affiliated with Tech. This may trigger a stranger danger warning or something, but I’d honestly love to meet another sophomore from another school. If you tell me when you’re coming, it could be possible for us to meet up and explore the campus or something. So glad someone else is interested in philosophy! Same goes to you, @mutedmornings !

If you’re worried about getting into the engineering program, I know internal transfers into the engineering college is pretty common. There are threads on that online, you can probably check them out. Affirmative Action will probably help you too, since you’re African American.

Yeah, Marc Edwards. For a while I thought he was the dad of that senior, but then I realized he was an environmental engineer. They don’t have many prerequisites for classes, so you can absolutely take at least a class or two. I fully intend on triple majoring in Environmental Engineering, Philosophy, and something else (Economics? Another type of engineering? French?), and dual degreeing where possible. If not, I’ll double major. I’m honestly sad that Tech isn’t as highly ranked in other subject areas since their engineering (specifically environmental engineering and the College of Natural Resources and Environment) are so highly ranked (MIT and Stanford have similar rankings). I honestly prefer UMich in terms of academic program strengths, but they’re known for frattiness and partying, plus OOS makes it nearly impossible for me to attend.

Also, add Columbia to my dream school list. Going to school in New York sounds freaking awesome.

I THINK I PASSED MY AP MICRO EXAM <:-P <:-P <:-P

I’m all done with AP exams! Now I have to start the 5 essays and 15 exams I need to get done by May 27. It’s definitely gonna be stressful, but I feel really positive especially since I have things to look forward to for summer.

Good luck to everyone studying for their finals!

@neonerudite happy belated birthday!
@mutedmornings same with the identity thing which is why I didn’t wanna indicate where I live
@neptuna yea! We can celebrate with Starbucks frap happy hours! This is random, but is the cat in your profile picture yours?

@ak2018 Thanks! And yeah, we watched an Italian movie about the hollocaust in Spanish class since we’re done with the exam (with subtitles, thank god), but I was suprised i actually understood a fair amount from knowing Spanish, so i don’t think it should be too hard… I think it would be cool to learn it cuz my grandma said her mom always spoke it and it sounds really soothing and cool

And btw the reason I consider my ethnicity American is becuase I’m really basically a mutt (I mean America is the melting pot  ) technically, I’m Italian (the only one that I have at least a small portion of the culture), Irish, I guess technically English (since my dad’s side came here on a boat like 300 years ago then eventually moved to the forests of California where they were relatively isolated), and a tiny tiny bit German. But realistically, it doesn’t make any sense to tell all that when asked for ethnicity, becuase I have very very little of the culture of any of those ancestors so those are pretty much meaningless. I mean I could say white, but that doesn’t make any sense to me becuase white is a race, and the definition of an ethnicity is that they share a culture, and tbh me, a white person in South Africa, and a white person in Russia are all white but we share no culture what-so-ever. And frankly, American just tells so much more about me

@ak2018 Virtual Handshake Back :)) =; (couldn’t find handshake emoji so I used hi 5 lol)

@KG5APR Woahhhh that’s so many AP’s omg, that’s awesome, but at the same time i would die lol. Btw AP Spanish is an awesome class, I think you’ll like it

Is anyone else doing the Siemens Competition this year?

@bubblylaugh Yeah, that makes sense. Though, if someone were to find my account… It’s not like I’ve posted my deepest, darkest secrets or anything, so I think I’d be fine. The most “exciting” thing they’d find would be my PSAT score, which really isn’t important in the grand scheme of things.

@mutedmornings I live in a state that isn’t really mentioned here and I’ve posted some specific school info, but I don’t want to let my online privacy guard down. Good luck with Siemens!

Is anyone in here taking AP Comp Sci Principles next year? I’m thinking about taking it, but I haven’t done any sort of computer programming or such ever, and I’m worried it will make it a lot harder.

@bubblylaugh Can you believe there’s only one Starbucks in my entire county? And it’s inside a grocery store! I hope we end up getting a full location because I really like the idea of that happy hour lol.
Nope, that’s not my cat. I think I found that picture on Tumblr. I do have my own cat, though.

Why not.

2016-2017 Schedule (plan/prediction)
(All dual enrollment classes at a local college)
Fall: English 201, calc based physics 1, multivariable calc
Winter: some english course, some US history, calc based physics 2
Spring: Spanish 3, another US history, calc based physics 3

Back up plan at my hs:
APUSH
AP Lang
AP Physics C
AP Comp Sci Principles or AP Chem
Engineering 4
Spanish 3 Honors

I’m slightly salty because my friend is beating me in class rank by 2 places even though I’ve taken twice as many APs, have a higher unweighted GPA, am taking honors science (unlike him), and am taking more classes than him. Good job school system.

@snowfairy137 How is he beating you if you are taking more weighted classes and have better grades?

@snowfairy137 I’m curious, are you doing the dual enrollment program through homeschool?

no, my state has this program called “running start” where any junior or senior can finish their high school credits and get started on college credits or get an AA at a community college or local university tuition free. Pretty much they allocate the money they would have spent on me to go to high school to the college instead.

@Abbiegaile It really is.That’s because in my county, in Virginia, has the most Robotics teams out of every other county. We’re known for our STEM prowess. Engineering is very hands-on, but there’s definitely some work you’ll have to do, like using formulas. You’ll need to know a lot about Algebra and Trigonometry.

@IrisShadow Definitely. I don’t know exactly when I’m coming yet, but my dad said we’ll pick a date on which he’s off from work. We’ll probably go online around the beginning of June to schedule the tour. I’d have to go between June 20th and June 24th as I start summer school on June 27th.

Also, I’ve decided not to apply affirmative action, I’ll elaborate in another post.

I think your triple major should be another type of engineering, like bio systems engineering, or something that combines biology and engineering.

So, I asked my dad about affirmative action yesterday and he actually gave me a good definition. I asked him if he decided to apply to college with affirmative action, and he said no. My father, being an immigrant from Ghana, went to and graduated from George Mason University in 2007 at the age of 35. While my father was definitely disadvantaged, when it came to his schooling, he decided not to apply affirmative action as he felt like he didn’t need it. Then I asked if I should apply affirmative action and he said, and I quote “Hell no!”. He wasn’t mad when he said it, and I agree with the reasons he gave after he said it. He said this because he, I as well, believe that I’m definitely more advantaged than the average black person. His reasoning was pretty simple as he stated ways in which I’m a lot more luckier than most.

  1. I currently live in a 2-story house in the suburbs and am not, and have never been, an inner-city kid in an academically-poor school district, like DC.
  2. While in the United States, at and after the age of 3, I've rarely ever lived a day without a computer, the Internet, or electricity.
  3. Through the Internet, I have a condensed version of all the information my local library could provide me at my fingertips and with the press of a few buttons.
  4. I live in a county with many STEM-related opportunities, like VEX Robotics competitions.
  5. I go to the most academically-challenging (rigorous) high school in my county and am getting better grades than I did back in middle school.
  6. (Which he believes is the most important!) (His words, not mine.) Unlike my brother and a lot of the black kids my father sees today, again, his words, not mine, I've been instilled with a mentality to succeed and excel above average, despite living in a society where some people assume that my race/skin color is correlated with how intelligent or knowledge I am. Meaning, I don't let the fact that Whites or Asians usually perform better in school compared to black people slow me down from reaching my full potential. I don't give up, even though I work myself ragged. The disadvantages I have, if any really, are very minimal compared to other black kids. He also recognizes that those of any race could be disadvantaged as well.

My dad definitely notices all the hard work I’m doing, even likes to brag about it to his friends, and commends me for it. When he was in school, in Ghana, he was actually at the top of his class at his boarding school. He knew from an early age that education was the key to his success, and to not live a life of selling stuff on the street just to make end’s meet. I may not tell him, but I admire the work he did when he was younger, and all of the struggles he faces made him stronger. I just sometimes hate it when he uses it as justification for me to stop complaining, which is something I rarely do in front of him.

Back to affirmative action, he said I don’t need to apply for it, as I’ve had plenty of opportunities to succeed and have, for the most part, never really missed that much of an opportunity. He said affirmative action should be for people who definitely aren’t as lucky as I am, and I agree. I should not apply for affirmative action just to make my academic-life easier.
