High School Class of 2018

So I just found out that my county decided to change one of its middle school’s name and named it after a much more deserving person. They’re changing the name of the school, the name of which belonged to a man who tried to do everything in his power to keep schools in my county segregated in the 60s and 70s, to honor a local Virginian African-American pro-civil rights activist from back in the 60s. I think they definitely made the right move, considering the fact that that school is of 80% racial minority. That school was actually one of the schools I signed up to go to, but I decide to go to the school nearest me instead. Kudos to them and the School Board for making this great decision, even after there apparently was a heated debate between the School Board Members about the decision. They are also planning to dedicate the new elementary school that’s being built about 4 miles away from me after another local Virginian African-American pro-civil rights activist from around the 60s and 70s!

@Kelvin82 That’s a tough decision, but I would follow what your heart is telling you to do. GWC is an awesome program and could lead you to amazing opportunities in the future just through connections alone. Does your school require AB before BC? If so you could dual enroll in Calc 1 at a later time, so you could be in BC by Senior year.
@ak2018 That’s freakin awesome! Someone needs to talk to Florida now…

@LeopardFire At first I read “Hon” as “Hot” and I was like ALRIGHTY THEN… :))

I’m getting my permit in 9 days and I just got a huge zit on my forehead. Like why. Why. Why now. I wanted to look good. It’s the type that takes forever to go away.

Ugh @neptuna I’ve been there. Acne sucks! Have you tried one of those acne cleansers they’re always talking about on TV? I remember one day in the 8th grade I had the biggest pimple on my nose. I got some CVS acne remover and it got worse. So I went back and got X-Out and they were gone in a day.

@neptuna @LeopardFire I interpreted hon as a pet name like “honey” and I’m like holdd up what? :))

@ak2018 Nah, my acne isn’t bad enough for anything like Proactiv or X-Out. My skin is pretty clear, but sometimes it just decides it wants to ruin my life lol. I’d loooove for zits to disappear instantly, though. I’m compulsive when it comes to not being able to stop touching them. :frowning:

Still going strong

So, my school alternates schedules every week. So why is it that I get a lot of hw this particular weekend and my study hall isn’t till the last fricken block!!!

good night everyone!!! 2:49 AM over here!!!

I have my Algebra II SOL in 30 minutes. WISH ME LUCK! I Feel Good Today!

@neptuna Do you have any makeup (concealer)? Even if you’re a guy, you can probably get some in a skin tone similar to yours from a female friend or relative. Just dab some on and use your finger to smudge it and blend it before you get your picture taken.

@Kelvin82 I plan on trying to get into AP Calc AB too! I second the suggestion @Hamlon had of taking DE Calc 1 at your community college, if it’s convenient for you. What I’m doing is studying Trig/Pre-Calc over the summer. I talked to the AP Calc teacher at my school and he’s arranging it so I can take either the Trig/Pre-Calc final the Trig/Pre-Calc teacher has, or the Trig/Pre-Calc portion of the AP Calculus AB test (which confuses me, but that’s what he said). Try and talk to the administration/teachers at your school and see if that can be done! There are a couple of self-studying math course threads on CC and the internet, so you can just do a bit of Googling for help on that.

I have no idea what Girls Who Code is, but it seems like a great program. Even if you annoy your parents, I think it’ll be worth it to go. Why are they afraid of you taking a bus? Would they be willing to enroll you in a self defense class if they’re worried about ou getting hurt? And why are they against you takig pre-calc at the community college?

@bubblylaugh @LosingCrayon @snowfairy137 What’s Springboard? I go to a fairly rigorous school (typically #370-ish in the country, probably around top 50 in the state as a guess, the school loves to brag about it), and I’ve never heard of such a thing. From what you guys said, they seem to have fairly low standards or at least busywork, which is sad. I love English, and doing something like that (from what you guys have said) would drain the creativity from me.

@IrisShadow I also am planning to take AP Calculus AB senior year. Speaking of math, I just took the Algebra 2 SOL and I’m both relieved and disappointed. I literally used my calculator to solve 55 out of 60 of the questions. I’m not trying to complain, but I feel like it could have been a lot more challenging, even with me using my calculator the whole time. I know I got at least 2 questions wrong, so I know I won’t get a 600, but during the test, I honestly thought that if I was careful enough, I could actually get a 600. Until those two questions came up :)) I literally spent 10 minutes on each question just trying to wrap my head around them before I was like, “I’m fine with not getting a 600. Even though it would’ve been my first time.” #stillhavenevergottenaperfectsolscore :)) I’m pretty sure you can at most usually 5 or 6 questions wrong before you dip into the 400 range. I’m expecting a pass advanced score! I’m officially done with SOLs for the year. <:-P I have my Computer Math Final Exam next Friday.

@ak2018 What I meant was getting into AP Calculus AB next year, by taking the Trig/Pre-Calc final and placing into Calc.

The SOL’s are ridiculously easy given the content they are supposed to cover. They are total jokes at my school, especially since you really need to try and do badly to get below a 400. I’ve gotten perfect scores a couple of times in middle and elementary, but now that I’m busy I don’t bother to study for SOL’s, given that I’ll still pass regardless.

This week I have final exams, but I’m exempt from half of them. I’m joining the MNHC (Monday), since I have a French final that needs a recording to grade pronunciation. I have a REALLY low grade I’m worried about, plus my AP Euro final (need a 99 to pull it up from 88.5 to 89.5!), both of which I’m terrified about.

@ak2018 Dw, you don’t need to get a perfect score! It’s not like colleges are going to make any decisions based on your SOL scores :stuck_out_tongue: As long as you get a pass advanced (or whatever the highest category is), you’ll be fine  On my transcript, it doesn’t even show the exact ECA scores. It just shows if you got a fail, pass, or pass+

@IrisShadow it’s the CollegeBoard’s pre-AP english curriculum. I’m doing the online version but it’s like a textbook sized workbook for the whole year. Its not particularly easy but its not particularly hard. It’s just super boring, repetitive, and full of busywork.

@IrisShadow At my school, if you’re able to get a 500 or higher on the SOL, you get a 100% on the final exam. The final exam at our school for any course is worth 20% of our 4th quarter grade. I really want a 500 on all of my SOLs since it would really boost up my grade in certain classes. And believe me, 4 out of 7 of my grades look abysmal right now.

I also don’t have finals until next Friday, however, most of my finals take place during the last week of school. I technically don’t need to come to school on the last day of school since I would’ve already taken the exam next Friday. Since the class I’m taking the final in is full of seniors, and the seniors at my school take their final exams a week earlier than everyone else due to their graduation, I will also be taking my final a week earlier. In fact, I’m pretty sure, since the final is going to be pretty long, we’re starting it on Thursday, to get a head start.

@LosingCrayon I know, LOL, my teachers, particularly my Chemistry teacher, are putting a lot of pressure on me to score really high. Up until about senior year, SOLs are a big deal here, and maybe in most parts of NOVA (Northern Virginia). All the SOLs will do on my transcript is show that the course has verified credit, meaning that I took an EOC test at the end of the course. It won’t matter at all if I passed it passed advanced, as long as I just passed.

Also, my last class was pretty fun yesterday. Since we didn’t have any computers available due to SOL testing, and we need computers when it comes to a course called Computer Math, we just went outside and played some Jackpot, kind of like football. Since our Computer Math teacher is also our school’s football coach, he gave all of us a free football T-shirt. After that, we went down to one of our school’s many practice fields and most of the class helped our teacher measure out the field, while four of us played Jackpot. We just did that until ten minutes before the end of the school, and went back inside our classroom, which was a trailer because our school needed more rooms. As we were leaving the trailer, since the end of school day bell rang (we get out at 2:10pm everyday), it started to rain for the 20th time this month. It’s been pouring in Virginia, and on most of the Eastern seaboard, for a while now.

The rest of the day was pretty great too. Since we’re in the middle of SOLs, our schedules have been modified. Yesterday’s schedule was Period 6, then Period 2, back to Period 6, and then Period 1 at the end of the day, with no Period 4 yesterday. All Period 6 SOLs were taking place today. Math and English SOLs take place in the morning, while Science and Social Studies SOLs take place in the afternoon. In the morning, I went to my 6th Period first. I took my Algebra II SOL in the morning, had started at around 8:00am, and finished at 10:30am, 4 minutes before the end of Period 2, meaning I missed English class. I went to my English teacher to get any worksheet I missed and went back to Period 6 where we literally just sat in our chairs, and either slept, or used our phones until the last last shift, at 12:20pm. I did a little of both. I also listened to an audio book, since I brought my laptop and audio book to school. After that, I went to first period, you guys know what happened there.

Tomorrow, all 7th Period SOLs are taking place, but since I have HPE I 7th period, it means I have HPE I for four hours today. :((

2 weeks until I’m out! I’m still waiting for a confirmation or rejection from IB… I really hope I get in!
if I get in I’ll be able to take AP chemistry. do you guys think I should take AP chemistry and AP enviro the same year? I know they’re usually the same day at the same time, so I was thinking I could just take one late if that’s the case. would they let me? I would just rather take AP enviro than AP Econ ://

Lemonade is the best album I have ever heard~

Also, the band schedule came out for next year and I started crying just by looking at it, so I’m probably not going to do band.
