High School Class of 2018

hey guys!! I’m currently taking 4 APs but I may not take one of the exams because I don’t think I’ll be prepared this year (if I don’t take it this year I’m definitely taking it next year, though). one of them is AP lit. I didn’t have the opportunity to take AP Lang because I came into the program late, but I’m wondering if I should self study AP Lang and take the exam this year.

it looks like a really easy class and English is naturally my best subject, I’m very skilled at timed writing and essays in general, too. do you think it’s a good idea? has anyone done it before?

besides this, my classes have been great :slight_smile: I’ve been studying for apush and AP chem all day though, my chem tests are on Thursdays and my APush tests are Wednesday’s D: it really sucks, lol

@ihavenoideawow You don’t need to self study AP Lang. AP Lit and AP Lang are separate classes that teach different topics. AP Lang focuses more on trying to teach good writing skills, while AP Lit focuses more on analyzing text. You should be fine with AP Lit only.

@ak2018 When did you say your school starts, again?

Also just wanted to get your opinions on something: Would you guys rather have a normal summer break and normal school year or would you rather have summer be 1 month shorter and have a 3 day weekend every weekend during the school year. With the latter option you still get to have the same winter/spring/thanksgiving ect. breaks.

@kassh4 definitely the shorter summer/longer weekend! I feel that my summer vacation is wayyy too long and the weekend goes by in 30 seconds

@kassh4 I’d prefer the latter.

the latter @kassh4

I dont start school for another 2 weeks and I don’t know what my schedule is going to be although I do have a general idea of what it is going to be. The wait is killing me.

yeah i would also prefer the latter idk why they dont do that. It would be so nice to have a 3 day weekend every weekend

@kassh4 I would prefer a longer summer. Long summers allow to plan big events, such as vacations, academic programs, camp, etc. If you are someone who participates in several of these activities, then your whole summer would be taken up, with no time to just loll around and relax. A three day weekend would just be an excuse for teachers to assign large weekend assignments, make the gap between a test on the start of the weekday longer, and most likely just end up having another day to procrastinate.

i cry everytime I enter my AP Spanish classroom ;-;-;

@kassh4 It starts Monday, the day after tomorrow.

@nyuhopeful44 I used ratemyteachers.com last year. My school is medium sized, has three floors, but the new high school in our county opened, which took away a good 25% of our graduating class, including our class president (we have a new one now). Our projected enrollment for next year is about 1,200 students, which is a decrease from the 1,800 students from last year.

@ak2018 mine is a complex of three different buildings, two with two floors and one with three. We have to walk between them and have 10 minutes for passing time. I think our enrollment is 6500-7000. We have about 150 teachers

@nyuhopeful44 You definitely weren’t kidding when you said you went to a BIG school! What state are you from? Our schools definitely aren’t that big. What kind of school do you go to (regular or magnet)?

My DD’18 starts her class Monday and we used ratemyteachers.com to look up her teachers, she will have a tough year.

I get really angry when I go on ratemyteachers.com and people leave my favorite teachers bad reviews, it hurts my soul

I got the decision back from OHSx and they said I could do multivariable calc this semester online, but they wouldn’t give me financial aid cause there were so many people applying for aid. So, I would have to pay $1,500 for the course. Do you all think I should do it?

@kassh4 I would say no, but that’s only if you can handle a math semester gap. I would also say no because, personally, your parents should know that they will have to pay for it. Hopefully, your parents know at this point. If they’re okay with paying a grand and a half, on likely such short notice, then definitely go ahead and take it. If your parents are anything like mine, meaning they would flip if I asked them for anything over $40 on such short notice, then I wouldn’t even bother doing it this semester. If that’s the case then I would give them a heads up so that they know that eventually they’ll have to pay $1500 for the class. You should really talk it over with your parents.

@ak2018 yup my school is the only one like it in the country! I live in Michigan. It’s a public school but we do school of choice so we get some kids from out of area
