High School Class of 2018

@Hamlon I mean last year I didn’t really go all out for that day. I just wore a red shirt, white shorts, and my blue Vans. I mainly only did so to fit in that day. In all honestly, I was planning on wearing my Ghanaian attire, but decided not to as it might have “caused some strange and dirty looks directed at me”. I would’ve stuck out like a sore thumb that day. A few of my friends were given dirty looks when they decided to wear their Ghanaian and Nigerian attire that day. They even tried to explain that it was actually appropriate, as America is a melting pot of cultures, but I guess it wasn’t enough.

it has been confirmed, we will be going to visit UVA next Saturday! :smiley:

So I just registered for the PSAT and by counselor said that they don’t have the student guide/ practice test #2 for the PSAT… Does anyone know if college board has made this available online?

@ak2018 I’m so excited for you! We’re both visiting colleges we love next weekend! You going to UVA and me going to McGill. It’s going to be so much fun!

For the SAT Subject Test, I am planning on taking Math (Level 2) and Biology.

Also, are any of you in AP Calc BC or AP Physics 1? I’m struggling! I find it funny you guys are putting your grades on here. If you saw mine at the moment… you’d all cry. Nine question tests are not my forte.

@thenorthstar Yeah, my twin is. First time she’s made such a low B in a math class. She’s not having a bad time w/ Physics 1, but that’s because all STEM students had to take pre-AP Physics freshman year. Physics has a learning curve, but try to relate what you’re learning to previous science/math classes (emission spectra in chem vs. optics, vectors from pre-calc, etc.) or find real world examples (feeling of inertia when your car changes velocity). It becomes a much easier course when you’re not memorizing formulas, graphs, or diagrams.

@ak2018 thanks–that’s a great idea!

@Hamlon Just out of curiosity, does your twin also use CC? LOL

For my AP Physics 1 class, we have no tests–only quizzes, and they are out of very few points. The students who got form C (myself included) on the last one automatically got a point because none of the MC answers were right… :confused:

My Piano 1 class is a nice chill break between AP Lang and AP Econ and having a friend who also has piano experience makes the class extra fun. Last class we took a test on music history, and she had a question that basically had an infinite # of extra credit points and I got a 165% (I can’t find the laughing emoji).

I have two friends taking the SAT tomorrow.

by she I mean my teacher in the piano “paragraph”

@bubblylaugh Nah, she’s a lurker though.

It’s homecoming weekend and I’m taking a PSAT practice test. :stuck_out_tongue: I wasn’t going to the dance anyway because I don’t find dances enjoyable and figured I might as well be productive. Also, I’m broke and just didn’t have it in me to pay $20 for a ticket. After the PSAT, I’m going out with a friend or two to this art festival that opened up. I also think I’m getting Boba (Bubble tea) today. I NEED IT!

@frazzledazzle That’s so great! Hope you have fun at McGill’s!

So I just heard someone got arrested at a high school football game near me. Apparently a freshman from F High School knocked out a junior at CDH High School, the school my brother and I went for the football game two weeks ago, and got arrested. It was over the fact that F High School’s football team beat CDH’s football team 33-28. It was the first time F had ever won over CDH, ending CDH’s undefeated record.

@snowfairy137 Yeah, you don’t get freshman merit aid but a lot of family friends and relatives all transferred because:

  1. There's less competition
  2. No standardized testing
  3. They put a bigger emphasis on uni marks

May not apply to all schools in the US but I know people who have transferred to Yale and Princeton respectively.

Hey, @kassh4 ! Yeah, I’ve been doing plenty of past problems and stalking around on Art of Problem Solving. For general review of stuff/learning new stuff, the Art of Problem Solving books and website can’t be beat (at the high school level).

My first AMC 12 score was pretty much on par with yours, haha, but after working infrequently on it for a while it’s climbed to ~100. Doing past problems and learning new math is just the best way to prepare (in my mediocre opinion).

@OMPursuit Is there a list of the stuff covered on the AMC? The books are kind of expensive and idk if im ready to commit myself to it that much.

Oh, no worries! @kassh4
If you want stuff to do, just look at the Art of Problem Solving website. They have a practice system named Alcumnus (which is quite good) and a thriving community chock-full of math problems and mock tests, not to mention every AMC 10/12 and AIME ever released.

There’s no standard list of things or limited scope to it, except for the exclusion of any calculus or things requiring calculus (although calculus very well may be used to solve problems on the AMC).

Doing past tests is the best way to get an idea of how it is, and most problems can be solved through creative use of what you’ve already learned, or can pick up on testing day. Creative use of the modulo operator, case bashing, and parity is often invaluable (if you wanna look those up).

@OMPursuit ok thanks. Also on test day is there any point to your score if you dont make the AIME cutoff? Like if you fall short 10 points is that going to benefit you at all or is it best to just guess on the rest and hope for the best.

Don’t guess, friend- the scoring system is built around dissuading /random/ guesses! @kassh4
Educated guesses, sure! You can actually find many an answer by using inequalities, educated guesses- process of elimination. That’s a technique for many questions.

However, educated guesses can’t help you on the AIME (which is not multiple choice and has graded work)…

Who else is slammed with homework this weekend?
I have to finish a lab for AP Chem, do a worksheet for Honors Precalc, read ONE HALF of The Heart of Darkness WITH ANNOTATIONS (we were assigned this friday so I couldn’t get ahead), do conclusion questions for Medical Interventions, and do a couple of worksheets for AP Micro. And I really wanted to put in some quality studying for the ACT too

@nyuhopeful44 Why the heck is your teacher making you read and annotate half a book in 3 or 4 days?! My AP Lang teacher doesn’t even like the idea of homework (all the homework I had was just finishing stuff I didn’t finish in class).
