High School Class of 2018

@snowfairy137 Our snowdays are made up at the end of the year, so after the ap tests. Last year our AP Chem class had their equilibrium test the day before the ap test.

@neptuna It depends on the homework load. Some days I’m able to casually watch YouTube or the entire first season of Stranger Things, whereas other days it takes me forever to finish my homework and I have anxiety attacks.

@Tobster18 You must be in Florida or the Southeast. In Maine we still experience the effects of hurricanes (sometimes). We’ve even had hurricanes hit us in the past. We just don’t close school because the storms aren’t that severe. School does get closed because of blizzards, although that doesn’t happen much in my school district because the superintendent doesn’t like closing school.

@kassh4 @snowfairy137 We build in 3 snow days to the schedule and add or subtract as necessary at the end of the year.

Last year I took AP Bio in a weird way: since I did one semester in one school and another in a different school, I ended missing ecology, viruses, evolution (all of those chapters), and more that I can’t remember rn. I studied them by myself throughout second semester and ended up with a 5. So, it is possible to self-study ahead of time if you know or think that you will miss some part for the AP.

It feels like forever since I’ve been on CC!!! I’ve just been so busy haha. I would do a grade update but my AP Lit teacher still hasn’t plugged in my makeup grades for the Harkness discussions (which I suck at because social anxiety), so it’s not worth it yet. I should be able to do one on Friday, though, because that is the end of the first 5 weeks (aka progress reports being sent out).

@LeopardFire Sophomore year, I was stressed 1st semester because it was my first time taking AP classes and 2nd semester because I had no idea how to prepare for AP exams. I feel like now that I have a grasp on things I’m having less of those stress-filled days. I do have the occasional flip flop, though. I get you.

@CoolCakes I don’t feel like any of my classes are difficult, but some are a lot more demanding. I’m glad you’re not too stressed.

@nyuhopeful44 I think the stress will definitely pick up for me during 2nd semester. I’m dreading AP exams and the ACT. But you’re right, we just have to tough it out. I’m really excited for senior year and college.

@frazzledazzle That is 100% me sometimes. I’m taking AP Comp Sci which is a lot of trial and error, and some days I’ll end up spending way more time on its homework than I expect and it gives me pretty bad anxiety.

AP Bio is so much memorization. I literally take so many notes each chapter. For anyone who’s taken AP Bio, how did you manage to write down all the concepts without going into detail? I reread my notes and highlight the key terms when I study, and BozemanScience videos help with remembering info. Also, I was thinking of getting a prep book to get the important concepts down - I’m not sure yet whether I should get Barrons or Princeton. I heard that some of the editions are out of date and not compatible with the new curriculum.

@preciousdiamond I don’t. I take notes in class, read the chapters, Quizlet, MAYBE Khan Academy or Crash Course.

And get Barron’s.

@preciousdiamond I used the Barron’s book last year when I was in AP Biology. Good supplement to the textbook. Get the latest edition (I think that’s the 8th). The practice tests in the back of the book are very useful.

@Tobster18 Some schools south of Virginia are closed.

@kassh4 I remember last year when our county closed school for 6 and 1/2 weekdays due to a snowstorm that brought down 4.5 feet of snow. Since I wasn’t taking any APs, I didn’t feel the effects of a rushed classroom, except in my Honors Chemistry and Honors World History classes. We only moved the exams three days.

@ak2018 in Michigan we get 4.5 + inches of snow every year and we all still go to work and school lol. It’s funny when southern states shut down over barely anything

@nyuhopeful44 To be fair, they are way less prepared to deal with the snow than the northern states.

I don’t have school off this week, but I do have a five day weekend!! We have Columbus Day on Monday, and Yom Kippur on Wednesday, so the district decided to let us have Tuesday off too!

@nyuhopeful44 Not to be confrontational, but a category 4 hurricane is not “barely anything”. That’s up to 140 mph winds and a lot of rain. I live really close to the east coast of Florida and we are getting hit hard.

3 day weekend ill take it. Well APUSH test Tuesday so I am going to have to spend a lot of the weekend studying.

Hey for anyone who has taken the new sat, what prep book would you recommend?

lol you guys are talking about snow and storms and having school days off because of weather and i’m over here (a californian) thinking haha snow days that doesn’t even exist in my vocabulary

anyways i hope you all are safe right now!

meanwhile, in southern California, snow days are pretty much extinct.

@nyuhopeful44 he (@ak2018) said 4.5 FEET not inches

I just learned my exam for the online multivariable calc next week is 12-13 problems and takes 3!!! HOURS! asdfoiajsdfirjfv I’m going to die. It’s all paper and pencil and free response

@LeopardFire @nyuhopeful44 Believe me, living in the D.C.area, you learn a couple things. You’ll learn very quickly that drivers in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) are one of the WORST DRIVERS EVER! Seriously, we have at least 3 - 5 major accidents during rush hour EVERYDAY, and those accidents usually occur on Interstate-95 (I-95) or the Capital Beltway. I usually watch the news, to hear about weather and traffic, and it usually won’t even be 6am before some tractor trailer is overturned, blocking traffic and slowing everyone down. I would imagine places like New York are worse and I actually remember hearing that the D.C. and Northern Virginia areas are the 3rd worst places to drive and for car insurance (our rates are pretty high). It’s enough that we’re already bad drivers, but if add snow or even rain to the mix, it would be even possible for us to be worse.

Last year, when that big snowstorm was set to hit the D.C. area during the afternoon rush hour, everyone started freaking out. Our county said they wanted to get us out of school as soon as possible so that the bus drivers and car drivers would not be caught in the storm. I remember it being a Thursday as all of the extracurricular activities were cancelled for the day. I was walking home, at 3:30pm, just as the snow started to fall and it was honestly kind of cool, no pun intended. By 6pm, there was at least 1 foot of snow on the ground. I was watching the news and saw these pictures of stores that had EMPTY SHELVES. There were stores that ran out of certain foods, batteries, lights, etc. I honestly didn’t think it was that serious at all. That whole snowstorm mess, ironically, got #winterpocalypse trending on Twitter in the D.C. area. It left those who got stuck in the snow stranded for hours in traffic. It took some people up to 3 hours to get home. My parents were able to beat the traffic just in time. Honestly, we just can’t handle snow. The D.C area’s complicated and intricate infrastructure paired with the terrible drivers makes for a bad combination.
