High School Class of 2018

So I knew exactly what I was doing for 6 of the 12 problems on my multivariable calc midterm. Half of the rest I think I got mostly right, and the other 3 were rather wild shots in the dark! I hope my professor grades nicely.

@sewin2music You have 3 weeks of winter break? I only have one, because they make sure they always give Christmas Eve to the New Years and it always manages to be in the same week pretty much. Ugh!

@joyce1517 I’m in so many extracurriculars!!! I have the main ones, like winterguard, musical, and marching band, and then the small clubs, like Ecology/Envirothon Club, my Gay/Straight Alliance (I just got voted secretary!), and chorus council (secretary as well!) And those are just a few things I’m in haha

So today I:
Got >5 hours of sleep
Bombed my chem test
Got in a fight with my mom
Had one of those “I’ll never get into college” freakouts.
Sigh

I took the September ACT with the intention of doing well enough that I would only have to take it once. I got a 36, so I am done with standardized testing… wait… EXCEPT FOR THE FREAKING SAT 2s and the PSAT and the SAT if I get NMSF… nevermind :((

@snowfairy137 at least you’re done with some of your testing with an amazing score nonetheless!

by the way i’m going to sound super clueless but do the selection indexes for psat different by state? like the index for a 1200 in one state might be higher or lower than in a different state?

@snowfairy137 if only we could have your problems :((

Summary of Last Two Days:

  • One of the librarians, one of long time friends let me have some coffee after school on Tuesday.
  • I got a 94% on my U.S. History test yesterday.

Also, I went through some old yearbooks in my school’s library and found yearbooks that went all the way to the 1940’s. I looked through the yearbooks and noticed two things:

  1. The first people of color weren't allowed at my school until 1970.
  2. There was a time when the school had a 100% white population for about a decade.

I really thought it was so weird how many things have changed through the years.

The Index for psat: You take your english score times two plus math divided by 10. Each state looks at the list of psat indexes for their state and cuts off to have a certain percent of each state as NMSF. So, California, a rather smart state, had a cutoff of 221, while Alaska, with less smart people, had a cutoff of like 213.

Hey guys i really need some advice. I want to revive our GSA (gay straight alliance) because right now it’s just a group of underclassmen who just talk and don’t son anything or hold formal meetings. (I’m pretty sure they don’t even talk about gsa topics or have officer’s) I talked to the advisor (also the advisor for our science bowl which im assistant captain for) and she said they really need leadership and structure/older people (upperclassmen lol). I have a lotttttt of ideas for the club and it’s something I’m passionate about. How should I approach them/what should I do?

@Soccer1235 I wouldn’t say they’re less/more smart. Some states are very rural or have weak or intentionally vague standards. Also, population size (of students taking the test) plays a factor. Less competition means lower scores. The ACT is popular in a lot of the states with lower scores.

@neonerudite Make a written and precise plan and share it with them at the meeting. It’s what I did for my group and we were able to completely overhaul our club’s organization. I can share my doc w/ you, but what worked at my school might not work well at yours. If you’re just an ally, be careful you’re not stepping on toes. That could create a very hostile situation. Ask them exactly what they want to get out of this club. Maybe they just want a space to be themselves? Some sexual and gender alliances are social, some are activist/educational, and some are like a support group. Work out the intent and you’ll know what to do next.

@Hamlon tysm for the reply, I’m not an ally so no problem there and if u r able to share ur doc that would be great :-). Me and my friend are planning for it to be all of those things (social, educational, support group) where we have certain support group meetings, celebrate awareness days, organize activism, etc so we are kind if ambitious lol. I def need to work out and coordinate if they just want a space to themself, bc I understand that but then a lot of people want GSA to actually do stuff lol

So today, I found out that I’ve been “friends” with a talking snake for three years. Today, I decided I was no longer going to be taken advantage of by said snake. That snake no longer talks, at least to me.

Today, I continued my journey into finding out who my true friends are. I sat with a new, better, group of friends at lunch today that I actually had things in common with and made me laugh. I really need more friends such as these.

Just a little bit of poetry I wrote about one of my ex-friends. If I could describe him in one word: Fake!

In other news, I’m currently at a FRC Robotics pre-season meeting. I just got registered and everything. I’m so excited! Our first “competition” is next Saturday. It’s going to be a 12 hour competition, from 7am to 7pm. It’s going to be my FIRST Robotics competition in two years.

Hi guys! I finally have an A in AP Calc, I’m so happy!!

@ak2018 Good for you! I’m glad you have the strength to move away from snakes. Good luck with your new friends! (:

SAT scores come out October 27th. I’m worried.

@Hamlon Yeah it’s not necessarily smartness (if that’s a word), each state just has a specific percent that can go on to be semifinalist, and states like California have lots of people who do very well, so the cutoff is high, but Wyoming has far fewer people who do very well, so then their cutoff is lower.

@cliffnotes I know you’ll get a good score!

I’m auditioning for all-state jazz band tomorrow! I have no idea if they accept flutes or not, but I’m going to try to get in!

@Hamlon @Soccer1235 thanks for the info!
