OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME I GOT AN 86% ON MY MULTIVARIABLE CALC MIDTERM AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
IT EQUATES TO AN A ON THE GRADING SCALE!
@snowfairy137 I believe we are partnered with NASA as well as the Virginia Space Grant Consortium.
@ak2018 cool! when does your course start. Mines supposed to start in early december
that sounds super cool @snowfairy @ak2018
I’m also applying to the Asian American Youth Leadership Conference, and that application is due on October 31st. The chances of me getting it are really slim, though, because only 50 people are accepted. Also, I may or may not have procrastinated on writing those essays…oops.
@snowfairy137 Well I’ve up for two programs (VASTS and VESSS), just in case I don’t get into one or the other.I already e-mailed the program coordinators who said that it is okay that I signed up for both programs, but that if I am accepted to both, I will have to choose one or the other. If that situation arises, I’ll obviously choose VASTS (The Aerospace Program).
Anyway, the start date for the courses for both programs would be November 26th. VASTS would have 8 modules (units) spanning from December - April, while VESSS (The Virginia Earth System Science Scholars program) goes from December - March and has 7 modules.
I found a video of the program that got me really hyped, if you want to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC82l-G8pig
I don’t want to jinx it, but getting in to the program would be so cool. We would actually get to stay at a college (Christopher Newport University in Hamptons, Virginia) and I’d get a dorm with a roommate, it’d feel like I’m in college, if only for a week.
@LeopardFire Thank you so much
We are all doing all right. Calling hours tomorrow and funeral on Saturday, so I probably won’t be on CC very much in the next couple of days.
But to add to the stress of being in Canada for 3 days of school and not having internet for most of the day everyday, I am getting sick up here!!! Head cold, but it is one of the worst head colds I’ve had in my life (possibly exaggerating, but very necessary exaggeration haha) so this should be fun. Some of my teachers will have to understand that I won’t have time to do all of their homework… Stressful all the way around.
@Ak2018 thats cool! We have 10 lessons and a final project so I guess its slightly differerent. Im pretty sure we stay in a hotel, not a dorm, but hey, I’m not complaining lol.
Has anyone done research on choosing a major yet? I’m just here waiting for ONE article that doesn’t tell me I’m going to end up homeless if I don’t choose engineering or computer science. Even a lot of sciences and maths are apparently “useless.” Feeling really discouraged.
@neptuna I already have an idea of what I want to major in - planetary astronomy, astronomy, or astrophysics - based on my interests and what I have found that I like doing based on my observational astronomy projects. What I do for undergrad depends on the school. End game is to study planets - planet formation, detection, themselves (geologically or otherwise), and the Solar System.
I just remembered that the application for the Aspirations Program at my local university (the program for me to take a class there spring semester) is due next week! Eek! I need to finish it and turn it in basically tomorrow! Aaaaaahhhhh!
The Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics application opens in just over a month! I can’t wait to apply and (hopefully) get in! That would be such an amazing opportunity to do research and learn about space, physics, computer science, and math at the collegiate level for a month at Yale of all places!
The quarter ends in a week from tomorrow.
There are some grades that I need to bring up before then. This is going to be a long week. I’ll post a grades update tomorrow when I have more time and it isn’t so late (it’s 11:30 on the east coast right now).
I want to major in math or business or chemistry. Havent got past that point yet.
I want to major in robotics engineering. I almost have the problem of being too specific, as that is only offered at a select few universities…
@frazzledazzle That sounds interesting! The discouraging articles I read would probably call that a useless major as well, but they forget to take into account that if you go to graduate school you’ll end up making big bucks (and you’ll actually enjoy your career, too). The Yale Summer Program sounds great for that. I hope you get in! That would be perfect for you!
I want to pick either a biology or math related major. I’m not all that into “practical” fields though, so my only route with those majors would be research/teaching. That’s where I start to panic. Like, what if I finish undergrad and then decide I don’t actually want to go to grad school and then I’m left unemployable and working at Starbucks to pay off my student loans? :-SS
@frazzledazzle one, there are jobs outside academica like autuaries and stuff for math majors. Another option is to double major. My dad double majored in amth and comuter science then went on to get a masters degree in math. As far as I know he uses cs a lot more, but he definitely doesnt regret his math degrees. Good luck!!
I want to major in Aerospace engineering and minor in math
@snowfairy137 Yeah it’s pretty similar. We also have a final project as well and each unit will be due every two weeks once the program starts.
BTW, I’d love to major in Robotics Engineering. The closest thing is Mechanical Engineering with a Robotics focus.
@neptuna I’ve been doing research on the Mechanical Engineering major for a while.
@Ak2018 Carnegie mellon and wpi both have bachelor’s in robotics. My back up choice is obviously mechanical engineering but its hard bc robotics kinda has components from mechanical, electrical and computer science. What schools have you found with a robotics focus for there ME program?? So far the only one I’ve found is Eastern Washington University and I really don’t wanna go there.
I’ve done research about about a billion different college majors since about sophomore year, but I’ve been looking into my current thought (communications) for at least 3 or 4 months now. I want to do communications with a focus on digital or media somehow (goal is to be a media manager/marketing kind of thing).
I keep hearing from people that I won’t get a lot of money when I graduate, or that I won’t be successful in life with a major in comms, but I have been doing lots of research, and I feel that I will be fine. Thanks to the development of the internet, lots of people can create their own jobs and make a decent living based on marketing themselves around the right communities on the internet.
@snowfairy137 If I were to double-major it would be with music performance. I play the flute as well as do science things!
@snowfairy137 I believe Virginia Tech and GMU do have programs where you take robotics-focused classes (Autonomous Robotics and Control Systems) later in your major.
