@solarsystem AP Comp Sci Principles started being offered at my school this year. My math teachers have described it as a class for people with no previous computer science experience.
I toured Providence College today! The campus was nice, and all the tour guides and students there were friendly, but there was a huge emphasis on religion. I knew it was Catholic college beforehand, but every building seemed to have crosses and religious artwork. They said they offered free transportation to other religious places of worship in Providence, but I don’t really want to be the only Jewish (or one of the very few) students on campus.
I think I am going to take AP Physics C instead of AP Biology. I had an epiphany yesterday and realized I didn’t like Biology at all when I took it freshman year. I have no idea what I was thinking.
In other news, I toured VCU today, and loved the campus. All the students were super engaging. An multiple professors let me tour their labs and talk about research!
Also, I am taking 6 APs this year, and I will take 5 next year.
I had course registration on thursday, here’s what I signed up for:
Criminal Justice Operations 4
AP Capstone Research
AP English Literature & Composition
Forensic Science
Calculus Honors
AP Economics
AP Computer Science Principles
Alright so I’m gonna talk to my guidance counselor Tuesday so I can change my schedule. This is what I’ll be hopefully taking next year:
AP Calculus AB (Block period)
AP Macroeconomics/AP US Government
AP English Literature & Composition
AP Computer Science Principles
Astronomy Honors
Band 4 Honors
Honestly, everyone’s talking about how they’re going to fit more APs in their schedule and stuff, but I’m just trying to figure out since it’s the last year of high school, how to fit in all the cool classes that I want to take. I really want to take things like photo, journalism, debate (as a novice lmao), the possible applied psych class that my school may be offering, creative writing, or one of the legendary history electives that everyone raves about. My personal dilemma is that I either take a second AP science and take 5 APs, or I take one AP science and one of the fun classes that I’ve always wanted to take. Oh well, everything is up in the air right now.
My guidance counselor told me not to take AP Physics C next year, so I’m going to take level 1 physics. I figured that it would be better on college apps to get an A in level 1 than a C in AP.
So here’s my schedule for next year!
AP Literature
AP Calculus AB
AP French
Physics Level 1
Honors Band
I also plan on taking Introduction to Astronomy at my local university during the fall semester as well. I might also have an independent study in astronomy during one of my study halls dependent on my schedule and the astronomy teacher’s schedule.
I also have nearly finalized my college list!
University of Maine
University of Arizona
Boston University
McGill University
Case Western Reserve University
Caltech
Harvard
Columbia
NEC (for the dual degree program with Harvard)
Either MIT or Yale if I’m feeling ambitious.
When I had my guidance appointment yesterday I received my updated class rank and GPA! I improved by a decent margin! At the end of the 2nd semester last year I was 56/276 and had a GPA of 3.667, now at the end of the 1st semester of this year I am 48/263 with a GPA of 3.8! (GPA at my school is weighted, btw) Hopefully I’ll get into the 30s and get a 4.0 by the end of the year or this point next year!
My school only offers 5 AP’s. Three of them are being introduced next year. Our AP Bio is in need of heavy reform (it was a train wreck this year) and the teacher who teaches AP English isn’t that good. I can’t take AP European History because that counts as an honors world history credit, which I took this year because I did not know that it was being introduced next year. I’m planning on taking APUSH next year. I had that teacher my sophomore year and learned a lot in his class, so hopefully that’ll go well. And we’re also getting AP Calculus AB next year which is in partial replacement of DE calculus. Basically, I’ll have to take both DE and AP calculus because it’s a full year course instead of a semester course (we have block scheduling.
I’m nervous about taking 3 AP courses next year when I had none in the past due to the lack of them at my school and the fact I could not take the prerequisites until junior year. If I could have taken an AP class this year, I would have, but we only had AP English Lit which is only for seniors and AP Bio which is a trainwreck and couldn’t be taken until senior year anyway since I just took chemistry this year.
I know this won’t hurt me too much in the admissions process because my school is fairly small and very underfunded. It’s the smallest one in my area and has the least amount of sports, clubs, and courses. It doesn’t provide many opportunities, but I mean, I can’t expect too much from a little public school, right?
is anyone currently in a relationship with someone and also an officer in 2+ clubs and taking APs and stuff because I need some major help with balancing school and life
@frazzledazzle Are you sure McGill, financial-wise, is the right university for you? I know a couple Americans that go to a university in my province (Dalhousie) and they pay a lot more compared to colleges in their state/country, and I think it’s the same deal with all other universities here.
@acomfysofa Really? McGill’s international tuition is only around USD $14,000. I’d consider it one of the biggest bargains in North America. It’s not much more than the in-state tuition at an average American public school.
All of you are lucky to have AP courses! At my school, there are only regular courses asides from “Advanced” English 12 and Pre-Calculus/Calculus 12 (which are considered advanced/“honors”).
There used to be Advanced Physics/Chemistry/Biology for Grade 11 & 12, but those were pulled presumably because not enough people took them :((
@KingBibi I think international tuition cost depends on the degree you take at McGill. Just checked their website and for a Bachelor of Engineering/Science, it’s about C$35k/US$27k for internationals. For a Bachelor of Commerce, about C$40k/US$30k. But for a Bachelor of Arts, C$16k/US$12k.
Those tuition costs aren’t including the C$4k+/- fees for international dental insurance, student services, etc. And there’s also residency, so expect to tack on another C$10k.
Hi guys, I was wondering if I could get your opinion. I go to a college prep school and it feels like there are very few juniors who seem concerned about college. Even some of my best friends haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I’ve taken it twice already. There are some who either think it’s too early to be thinking about college or who think about college but they don’t research stuff or become proactive. Is it weird that I am consistently on top of things and worrying about the very near future?
I also noticed that y’all are very proactive because of talking about different college stuff, like summer programs. I have been reading this forum for about the past two weeks and it puts my mind to rest knowing that I’m not the only one who thinks about this stuff. I know many others who have no idea what they are doing this summer yet I have had a job and a schedule shadowing with my doctor planned for weeks.
@madison2000 Honestly that’s the environment I’m in at my rural small public school :)) I’ve literally done so much research into different possible majors and different schools while most of my classmates don’t know and don’t care about much of this. I don’t think that you’re weird at all!
@madison2000 Not at all! I have a friend who is a senior that didn’t take the SAT until this past November. It is all up to the person and their aspirations. Many high schoolers are not to concerned about college unit senior year. Its good that you are being proactive.
@madison2000 I guess it depends on the person. I have two tests (SAT2/ACT) to go and only have four test months (or nine months) before applying, so I’m worrying about college applications right now just because of testing. But for most people, if you only need to take the SAT/ACT and applying RD, there’s still a lot of time.
