Apparently for the Mayflower Compact in US history, AMSCO says it’s a constitution but the American Pageant says it wasn’t a constitution at all. If the SAT asks if the Mayflower Compact was or was not a constitution, I’ll be sad…
@acomfysofa Couldn’t you just go online and figure that out?
i just took a practice test today for the SAT! I think it went well!
For any of y’all that play instruments, do you think you’ll be able to continue in college? I absolutely love playing the cello but it will be a while before I can save up for my own. I have always played on a school-owned cello and the thought of not being able to play anymore has been on my mind for some time.
@Hamlon I’ve played the French Horn ever since 4th grade, on a school owned instrument. I’ve started to enjoy it less, so I’m not too upset about not being able to afford my own once I graduate. I do, however, want to start learning how to play the piano or guitar or ukulele or something similar.
@Hamlon I have been playing piano since I was 6, and it is one of the things which calms me down. I think I will be able to continue in college since many colleges have piano rooms. I have my own piano at home though.
@acomfysofa I think the mayflower compact was like an agreement on the ways the pilgrims would govern themselves. You could call it a constitution or not doesn’t really matter. Did the book like specifically say: “The Mayflower compact was not a constitution” or did it just not mention it? My book (not taking the SAT test but gotta take the class to graduate) doesn’t mention it being one or not. Either way, I don’t think they’d ask something like that.
@Hamlon I play the violin and piano but kinda quit both. I own my violin so I guess I could bring it to college but I probably won’t cause I don’t think I’ll practice without motivation like lessons or an orchestra. I’ll probably just give it to my brother cause he plays and he’ll need a full size one soon.
@snowfairy137 American Pageant: “Before disembarking, the Pilgrim leaders drew up and signed the brief Mayflower Compact. Although setting an invaluable precedent for later written constitutions, this document was not a constitution at all”
AMSCO: “This document, known as the Mayflower Compact, was an early form of colonial self-government and a rudimentary written constitution”
It would probably make more sense to not mention whether it was a constitution at all, like how no one says there was a direct cause of the Boston Tea Party.
@acomfysofa My teacher said it was not a constitution, but the class is based on American Pageant so that doesn’t really help ig.
I played the violin in the 6th grade, but had to stop because renting it was becoming expensive. I might try to pick it up again in college.
Geez, 86 pages have been added since I last contributed to this thread! Just out of curiosity, do any of you know if there are still any summer programs I can apply to? I applied to TASP, which I feel sort of confident about, but realistically, I know I have no chance… My essays were a bit rushed, but I think that the content is really deep and profound (I felt that the essay process allowed for a great deal of introspection).
I know @Hamlon has some experience with Telluride programs. I am looking for an experience somewhat similar to what TASP offers, if there is still a chance for me to apply.
As of right now, I will likely attend Boys State for MN, but I’m looking for a bit more to add- something to give me an edge in admissions, while also providing me an enjoyable experience.
If there is anything any of you can think of, just let me know. I’d appreciate it.
I’ve played the alto sax since 6th grade. I have to drop band next year because it won’t fit in my schedule, I may join marching band in college.
@FreePariah I’m also planning on applying to Boys State, but in VA! I’ll definitely look into some programs you could still apply for.
@FreePariah The Telluride programs are very unique. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of any similar opportunities. The closest thing might be a writing intensive course at a precollege program. However, proceed with caution because they are usually ‘pay-to-play’ and not selective. Your local community might have something. Take a class at a community college or find an internship. They’ll all be rewarding options. If it’s of interest, Indiana University is offering a slam poetry camp this summer.
I’ve officially signed up to attend the National College Fair near me! Thankfully, a few colleges I’m interested in are attending, although my school is only giving everyone an hour to explore! Because of that, I need to start planning which colleges are most important for me to get a chance to see! Probably the two OOS’s first (Kent State and Simmons College) and then the SUNYs in order of who doesn’t know I exist yet and/or most interested in… That way, I get the most important colleges if I run out of time before I get to every one of them.
@Hamlon I face the same problem with the whole instrument thing. I play the Bari Sax so its not really expected of me to have my own and idk what to do. What I know a lot of people do is join ensembles in college and I think they can rent you an instrument or something.
@acomfysofa McGill is definitely cheaper than most universities in the US. I’m also in the process of getting dual citizenship (my mom is from the Montreal area), so that would bring the costs down as well (I think). I would still have to try to get financial aid, but the costs are less than those of schools in the US.
@Hamlon I plan on continuing flute in college since I own a flute, but I’m not going to continue on the tenor sax since I won’t have one after graduation (school owned instrument). I’m going to minor in music since I want to continue my studies but I don’t want it to be my full concentration.
SAT scores are getting released in 3 days! Hope I get a 750+ on the Math 2 ;
I just found out that the state isn’t paying for us to take the writing section of the SAT, which is weird because if a lot of colleges require you to send in your writing scores, then why would you waste money doing this if kids will just have to retake it anyway? I’m not too mad though because this will give me the opportunity to decide whether I want to retake the ACT or the SAT in the fall, and it’s good practice.
