High School Class of 2018

Today I’m plotting out what I want to say tomorrow during my phone interview with members of the Hamilton Scholars Foundation! I’m actually the last person to interview with them, which I purposely did so that they remember me as a person more when making their decisions in addition to the notes that they will probably be taking during my interview (following the philosophy of my marching band and winterguard directors, who try really hard to be the last competing group in our division in every competition). Hope everything goes well!

@Marg532 Good Luck! We are rooting for you.

@kassh4 Thank you!

@carmen00 Boston is amazing in April. It might still be a little bit chilly, so bring a light jacket.

@Marg532 Good luck! Hopefully all goes well!

I GOT ACCEPTED INTO SAMS!!! OMG!!!

Congrats!!! @ak2018 I’ll be turning in my essays today and hopefully I get in too! How long did it take for your decision to come?

@Soccer1235 Long Story. I didn’t even fully submit my app. I submitted everything but my math teacher recommendation and an explanation of my freshman year grades. So technically, it took about two weeks!

I’m so excited! This is literally going to change my entire summer!

For those who want to know, here’s the acceptance letter:

Dear {My Name],

Congratulations! You have been admitted to Carnegie Mellon’s Summer Academy for Math and Science for summer 2017. The Carnegie Mellon Advising and Resource Center (CMARC) administers this program and we are excited to have you join our community for the summer! As a Summer Academy Scholar, the cost of your participation in the Summer Academy for Math and Science has been fully subsidized by the William Elliot Scholarship Fund.

To secure your participation in the program, you are required to pay a $100 enrollment deposit no later than 30 days after receiving your First Pass email. The $100 non-refundable deposit will be applied to your student account and can be used towards the purchase of books and supplies.

Your admission packet provides important information related to preparing for your arrival. Information regarding the First Pass email along with other important action items can be found on the Enrollment Checklist, accessible here. Once confirmation of your attendance is received you will be sent additional information from CMARC about program logistics and next steps. If you have any questions about the enrollment process, please call (412) 268-2150 or email cmu-sams@andrew.cmu.edu.

Please plan to arrive to campus on Saturday, July 1, 2017 by 2:00 p.m. Classes begin Monday, July 3, 2017 and end Friday, August 11, 2017. Students are free to depart campus after the closing symposium on Friday, August 11, 2017 after 5:00 p.m., but no later than 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

We received a very large number of applications so the selection process was extremely difficult. Your background is impressive and we are confident that your participation in the Summer Academy for Math and Science program will be rewarding, both academically and socially. You should be proud of your accomplishments. I look forward to meeting you on campus.

Sincerely,

Ty Walton

Director, Carnegie Mellon Advising Resource Center (CMARC)

NOTE: Please keep this letter as it contains your Admission ID number and important information for future use.

Oh that’s awesome @ak2018 I submitted everything but essays a long time ago lol so hopefully I get this decision somewhat soon!

@ak2018 congrats!

@ak2018 congrats!! I am submitting stuff today because I just got my LOR.

For anyone who got into the program and feel like the $100 deposit might pose a problem to your family, don’t be afraid to ask Carnegie Mellon. I called them and they said they will happily work something out that will decrease the cost.

This is just all too surreal! :smiley: :((

@ak2018 We might be seeing each other this Summer! I got into AP/EA on a full scholarship.

OMG YASSS!!! This thread is slaying the acceptances today! We should buy a lottery ticket!!! @Hamlon :)) :))

@Hamlon Congrats!! =D>

And…SCHOOL’S BEEN CLOSED!!! ^:)^

@Hamlon Have you thought about the courses you’re going to take? I’ve pretty much have the whole schedule here:

Differential/Integral Calculus (Calculus 1)
Physics Seminar
Programming Seminar
Engineering Project
SAT Preparation Course
Personal and Career Development

And next semester’s schedules are supposed to be coming out soon, which I feel is a bit early. I’m so nervous about the schedule since I really want to continue on in math (weirdo me) and in past schedules it conflicted with everything. :frowning:

Meanwhile, I should finish my application so I can avoid some scheduling conflicts for the fall and study for physics. I honestly feel like I’m dying in that class.

Probably just completely bombed my interview lol I was nervous as heck, they surprised me with their questions (I was kinda thinking they would ask me about stuff from my application, even a little bit), and because I was so nervous and flustered, I kept stuttering and awkwardly laughing and saying “um” “like” and “stuff” a lot… Hopefully they understand that I was super nervous…

@ak2018 I’m not sure because I’m only allowed 2 heavy classes. I am choosing between Differential and Integral Calculus, Physics 1 for Engineering Students, and Fundamentals of Programming and Computer Science. I’m definitely signing up for Calculus no matter what so we might even be in the same class if SAMS doesn’t have its own section! A couple of the non-STEM courses sound pretty interesting, but I wouldn’t have the time. Do you know when the deposit is due because I’m not entirely sure about my Summer plans?
