High School Class of 2018

Update: Exams start on monday, and we write fifteen subjects is a space of four days - sweat, sweat. Got a science competition next saturday - drenched in sweat- but thank God I pulled out of the science expo or I would have been heading out on sunday. Olympiad final round on April 11 - sweating blood, plus my GPA’s going to drop nastily because of all the competitions - I’m all dried up now.

Story of my life. Hope I survive the next two weeks.

Keep up the good work everybody.

@gigichuck March sounds early to take exams compared to here (May for AP, June for regular/honor/IB at my school). Does your summer start early or whatever?

So, since my counselor didn’t apparently send in my application, I wasn’t able to be interviewed for Boys State. :(( I’m so freaking mad! But at least I wasn’t the only one who had some sort of mix-up. I met another family and other students who went through the same thing. We’re all praying for each other now. I really want to get into this program, now that I know I would meet some pretty great people there. They said they’ll try and work something out with my counselor. I’ll make sure she calls them first thing Monday morning. She was supposed to send it in two weeks ago.

Hey guys! Long time no see. I used to post regularly, but I’ve been caught up in applications and schoolwork. How is everyone?
Good news is I am a finalist for the LEDA Scholars Program and my interview is next Tuesday. I came here to ask if anyone had any advice on how to prepare for the interview. If I get chosen to be a scholar after the interview, I will go to Princeton for seven weeks this summer.

@hamlon I see that you got an interview email too! When is/was your interview? What’s your advice for me? And what’s our chance of getting in now? Sorry so many questions :))

I’m now at page 700 in the American Pageant, or the Roaring Twenties! I’m probably about 100 pages away from catching up to you APUSH students (WW2?) :))

@acomfysofa That’s funny :)) My APUSH class hasn’t even gotten to the Roarin’ 20s yet. We’re still in the late 19th century.

@acomfysofa Holy Crap! How do you read so much in such little time? I am so impressed.

@kassh4 I’m spending about 2 - 3 hours a day reading the textbook to get it over with so I can start memorizing everything for the test, but I’m also genuinely interested in the subject. For me, when I’m not bound by tests/assignments/etc, it becomes a lot more interesting.

Also, I’m keeping notes by highlighting the details in the textbook. Much faster than writing down notes.

My APUSH class is about half way through the Cold War and past the Korean War. We’re starting review homework/quizzes online next week with only 5 school weeks left until the big test. We did take a 55 minute, 55 MC question last week and this previous week we took our last timed FRQ and DBQ of the school year. I think we only have one more test (period 8) and probably a quiz for period 9. I’m excited for APUSH to be over with, even though it has been my favorite class of the year. I think I’m just ready for all of the stress to end.

And learning on your own is faster imo. I taught myself how to code Java in 2 months without coding experience, taught myself Pre-Calculus in 3-4 months (enough for a 750 on the Math 2), and now US history in hopefully 4 months (goal is 750+, aiming for 800).

@acomfysofa My APUSH class is covering the Great Depression right now, so you’re not too far away from us!

I visited Mount Holyoke today! I’m especially interested in the 5 College Consortium with Smith, Amherst, UMass Amherst, and Hampshire College, giving a ton of academic and social opportunities. It is definitely one of my top choices now. ^^

@HelloThereHola My interview was yesterday. Just relax! We were chosen because they found something interesting about us. Talk about things that were and weren’t emphasized in your application. It’s your time to let them know who you are and why you would be a good fit for LEDA.

@HelloThereHola @acomfysofa @LeopardFire @madison2000 My class got to JFK yesterday. Into the 60s!

We just finished WW2 before break started.

@acomfysofa Do you mind if I ask what else you did to study for the Math 2 exam?

It’s funny because I remember taking my first APUSH test and feeling doc defeated, mainly due to the time crunch. When I took my 55 question MC test I only took 35 minutes and for my FRQ and DBQ I had about 10 minutes left. I really didn’t feel confident on the subjects so that’s why I only had a few minutes.

@solarsystem I used Barron’s Math 2 and for me, it was harder time-wise. I had 670+/- with 1 hour, but 770+/- with 2 hours. However, it’s probably because I just learned all of the concepts in Pre-Cal before taking the practice tests, so I didn’t have a lot of practice with Pre-Cal questions beforehand. IMO Barron’s is okay, but after you use those practice tests, use the Official CollegeBoard Math 2 practice tests a week or two before you take the actual test as those practice tests will be more helpful and realistic (for example, learning how to managing time) when you actually take it. I never used the Official Collegeboard practice tests, but those would’ve been really helpful.

@acomfysofa We are at the tail end of WW2 (getting into east and west Germany). You should be just fine

@singingwriting I’m taking the SAT US History in June and hoping to finish reading the textbook by the end of March or early April, so if I do that, I’ll have almost 2 months to go over and review everything.

I talked to my guidance counselor about taking an APUSH exam at a nearby AP high school in May (so I can get credit if I go to a university in my province), but I missed the deadline that was 11 days ago! I only thought about taking the SAT so I didn’t think about the AP exam until a couple days ago. Guess I’ll be taking it next year.
