High School Class of 2018

@frazzledazzle I would be happy to check out Caltech for you! You’re interested in astronomy, right? I could peek at their astro department if you want!

@hamlon I saw that you’re interested in Pomona. I live ridiculously close to the Claremont Consortium, so if you want to know anything about Pomona, hit me up. Congrats on your interview with LEDA ; I am rooting for you to get in! I also think it would be wise to wait to interview for Reed. Out of curiosity, did you go to the junior fly in program at Reed?

I just had my phone call with my matriculate advisor and she’s so nice! She’s really helpful and reassuring too!

@Kelvin82 lol did you get a girl from Notre Dame too

@kassh4 yeah!

@Kelvin82 lol DM me her name I wanna see if we got the same one

@Kelvin82 That’s great. I’m actually trying to enter into Matriculate too. I actually had to resubmit my app after one of the reps told me they would not accept me with a 3.44 GPA, unless I rounded it up, which they told me to do. I should have an advisor by Friday. I can’t wait to find out who he/she is and what school they attend!

Anyone know of any college tours / open houses coming up in Michigan? I know Kalamazoo’s is soon-ish, but that’s it.

@madison2000 My school doesn’t have junior prom, just a senior one.

I’m leaving for Boston tomorrow to visit MIT, Olin, WPI, and Northeastern!! So excited

@solarsystem That makes sense. I’ll probably try for the summer.
@Kelvin82 Omg. I have so many questions about Claremont!!! I sadly found out about the Junior fly-in program after the deadline, but I’m definitely going for the fall diversity program.

Mine is June 3rd and the theme is “The Red Carpet.” I’m on prom committee this year, so I gotta help come up with the theme. We chose it because it was super easy to go and get a dress for, as last year’s theme, Gatsby, was a flop regarding people getting outfits that matched the theme haha

My prom is May 12th (lol I have an AP test that day) and our theme is “Starry Night”! I’m on the prom committee for next year so I gotta think of a theme too.

@snowfairy137 have fun in Boston! I loved visiting there; it’s an amazing city full of students and opportunity. Northeastern was so cool, MIT was nice too although not for me. So many good eng schools there :slight_smile:

Also, what do you guys think of meeting with a college counselor? Like not super often, just once in a while. My counselor at school is alright, but she doesn’t really understand all aspects of college admissions and I don’t want her to be in between arguments between my family and I…I feel like there’s a lot of misconceptions my family has and I kinda want an expert to straighten them up. I’m not an expert on admissions obviously, but I feel like the knowledge I have is much more up to date than theirs (they think students need to be well-rounded and that schools such as Northeastern and BU are “not competitive”…)

They are constantly giving me this outdated advice I feel…

Are they worth the money? I definitely don’t qualify for Matriculate (money-wise)…but I still definitely hate wasting money. I’ve had an essay for a program read over my an SAT prep company that does essay reading and stuff and they just said it was good and fixed like one typo. Was a waste of time and money…

It seems I’ll be heading to Boston to take the SAT in August! My family is going on a road trip to Toronto in the summer, and we’ll be going through the American route (Maine, Massachusetts, and New York), so I’ll be able to stop by a test center to take it.

I can take the SAT at a high school in Boston according to the SAT website. Does that sound correct? I’m curious as to what an American high school looks like, and how competitive the students there are :-/

@LushLillies I was thinking about a college counselor too, but I don’t know if my parents will spend the money. They know nothing about colleges. One of my friends was just talking about how his parents got one. I’m hoping that I can convince my parents so that I can get some help during this whole process.

So I got a 1370 on the SAT. Definitely didn’t reach my goal, but it’s pretty good for someone who got 3 hours of sleep and at least I can apply to Matriculate. I need to do some research but I’m leaning towards taking the ACT again instead of the SAT. I remember liking it a lot more.

@snowfairy137 Tell us how it goes! I was interested in Northeastern and BU but I’ll never have the opportunity to go to Boston anytime soon so I kinda scratched them off my list tbh.

Hey Guys! Just wanted to tell a great story. The story of how I how I got accepted to and then rejected from a program that I had second thoughts about anyway! :))

So yesterday, I had an unscheduled interview for Boys State. This was because I didn’t get to attend the Boys State interview on Saturday due to my counselor not getting it in on time. The program representative felt sorry for me, so he took tine to come down to my school so he could interview me because the mishap was not my fault. He interviewed me and it went really. Probably the best interview I’ve done. He told me that I was pretty much accepted, as long as I turned in the application to him tomorrow. I went home so ecstatic, however, I now had to make a choice. Due to a confliction between the dates, I would have to choose between the NASA Summer Academy and Boys State. I mulled over this choice all night, even trying to figure out if I could go to all four programs and take a MegaBus :)) But in the end, procrastination got to me. I didn’t finish the app because of how I tired I was and I just ended up forgetting about it. When I saw the program representative in the guidance office ready to pick up my application, I told him it wasn’t finished. He unfortunately, told me that he couldn’t accept, shoke my hand, and left. Everyone from the guidance department was there and saw what just happened and it kind of looked like I was going to cry, but I didn’t. In an ironic and very weird twist, the choice was made for me. Although it ended terribly, I have talked it over with several people who have all told me not to worry about. This incident is really a sign that I need to take a minute to organize my life and that was never meant to be in the program. I’m not that worried though since I’ve gotten into three different programs and now I don’t have to make a choice. Now I’m focused on getting through the year as I’m officially done with applying to summer programs. I hope people can learn something from this. If anything, know that things truly happen for a reason!

PS. Since the guy never took my application once he left, the counselor let me shred it as a sign of moving on! Hell yeah! :))

@neptuna Congrats!!! You did amazing! <:-P
@ak2018 That sucks, but at the same time you still have summer opportunities lines up. Keep on killin’ it.

@Kelvin82 That would be amazing! I live too far away (~3000 miles away) to travel so that’d be awesome! I’m interested in both the astronomy and astrophysics programs. If you could tell me what the vibe of the campus is as well, that’d be great. Have fun and thank you!

@snowfairy137 Have fun! I’ll be in Boston in a few weeks for the Cambridge Science Festival!

@LushLillies I meet with my guidance counselor (he’s basically my college counselor as well) a lot. It’s very useful because s/he can help you to stay on the right path, but if you don’t like his/her advice you can always consult us/the internet.

@acomfysofa Where in Maine are you traveling through? I live here and I can tell you some great places to visit on your way to Toronto! PM me if you want! Road trips through New England are so picturesque!

Is anyone considering doing UCLA summer sessions this year?

I also got my SAT scores back today and got a 1380, and I was wondering if its worth the trouble of retaking it. I think I might decide after I take the ACT and get my scores back

@frazzledazzle Messaged!
