High School Class of 2018

Didn’t get into WOW, but for some reason I’m not that sad! :)) I actually got some fee waivers out of it and and a 30-minute call with a Williams admissions offer to go over my app. If anything, I have this weird adrenaline rush that’s encouraging me to move on and keep persisting. So I’m planning on applying to Williams, because I have done research on them and I like what I see, and will continue to fly-in to apply to a few more fly-ins (I added John Hopkins and UPenn to my list after doing some research).

Also @gigichuck , to go off of what @Hamlon , you can’t focus on the past (closed doors) for too long or you will get left behind. Focus on present and future opportunities that are in front of you, while they are still in front of you. Take my situation above, for example, rejected one hour ago, and moved one in half that time. The door closed there, but I do not have the time right now, in the midst of college app season, to mourn a missed opportunity. We have to train ourselves for rejection soon, or else this will be a very long few months for some of us. After SAMS, being in college-environment for that long taught me that it’s not the end all, be all, but the beginning. I would hope you find some open doors soon. If you need to talk more about it, feel free to PM me. As you can see, I would not have said all this one year ago. I’m changing for the better, I guess.

I start senior year tomorrow! I didn’t do my summer reading so R.I.P. to my grade

Anyone else dreading the August SAT? Been studying for a while but I’m only 50% sure that I’ll get at or above my goal score, and 50% that I’ll get ~30 points less than my goal score!

@Hamlon Random question. Did you already talk with your parents about all the flyins you got accepted into? Not if, but when I get a flyin acceptance, I’m going to have to somehow justify to my parents that I’m going to miss a weekend to fly off to some university. I mean I know with these flyins, they do allow students to do their homework while they are there, but I feel like it might take some convincing.

@ak2018 Let them know that it is a great experience to see the campus and if you will like it all for free. If you plan accordingly you can get ahead of schedule leading up to the fly in so even if you miss two or three days, you won’t be super far behind.

Who here prospective Stanford applicants?

@tvpeople I might apply but idk.

Took Khan Practice Test 7 and got my best score yet: 770 M and 780 R for 1550 total. This test was easy with a brutal curve.

@snowfairy137 Do you use the SAT Prep App? If yes, do you know if the scoring is updated to no penalities for guesses?

@xxluvforeverxx No, I use Khan Academy on my laptop so no idea about the scoring on the app. I know on the real test there are no penalties for guessing.

Are you taking the August SAT? Any subject tests?

Just finished painting my locker and parking spot. Now it’s finally starting to feel like I’m a senior. My school is very nontraditional so it often feels like I’m not even in high school. (And I look closer to 12 than 18)
I found out my AP Lit teacher isn’t testing us on our summer reading until the second week of school which is amazing. She felt bad since so many of us have been stuck at school this week doing stuff for ASB, the admissions office, etc. For example, have to be at school at 6:30am tomorrow to lead an event for incoming freshmen.

Is anyone taking the September ACT? I’m planning to spend Labor Day weekend studying. I haven’t worked on application essays yet. I think I will be able to relax and start cranking them out right after the ACT. I’m going to try to avoid concerts until I’ve applied to my EA school and state schools. But I am seeing Green Day a week after the ACT…whoops

@Hamlon Applying to a safety sounds like it would be good for my mental health! I may just apply to ASU for the early acceptance. The free tuition would be a plus too.

@tvpeople yeah I am, just for NM though. Already took the ACT.

I’ve been getting 0 - 1 wrong out of the 10 - 11 questions on each passage from the SAT Reading sections from QAS CollegeBoard tests (April 2017 and May 2017) I found online. Which I’m getting after I read the answer explanations in the 2017 SAT Black Book. Sort of too frightened from my past reading score results from before I read the answer explanations to take a full reading test at once. This better work; getting my goal score depends on it :((

Just finished my last test for my online classes this summer! yay. Also pondering taking quantum physics this year… I love dual enrollment lol

@dietcig lol I get what you mean by avoiding concerts. I’ve been to six this year and have another one in October. I’m gonna be working in college, not to pay for college, but to buy concert tickets lol.

@Kelvin82 The QB app is both a blessing and a curse since some schools only look at or accept the common app
@BioRocksMySocks Thanks!
@ak2018 I’ll get to it eventually. They honestly won’t care all that much as long as my grades don’t slip.
@Kelvin82 Sure. PM me I’m going in September.
@tvpeople I’m applying because it’s non-binding for QB although it’s not my first choice. I’m also cramming for retakes of Math 2 and Chemistry. I’m not that concerned as my previous scores were fine, so I’m done until AP exams.

Thanks guys @Hamlon @ak2018 I feel so much better now.

PSA: I would like to inform all of my low income, high achieving seniors to apply to the Gates Scholarship: https://www.thegatesscholarship.org/

Also, did anyone apply to be on the College Board Youth Advisory Council?

@ak2018 does the Gates Scholarship accept Chinese Americans?
