High School Class of 2018

So much has gone down this week, I can’t even.

One of my friends got bullied by a senior, and it was pretty legit and stuff, EXCEPT the school (ofc) has no cameras so there’s no “proof” of the crime. The senior of course denies he did anything and it’s like ??? There were literally 5 people there but ok (I witnessed it from afar). Because of lack of proof, the school then told my friend that there was a lack of a perpetrator leading the case to be dropped.

BUUTT

My friends mom is calling into UPenn on Monday (the senior got in EA) to tell them about the kid and his shenanigans. But the thing is I’m pretty sure UPenn is early restrictive so if he gets his acceptance rescinded he might go to Community college or something.

My friends mom asked for my advice (our families are pretty tight) and honestly I’m kind of torn. The school doesn’t report cases that haven’t been “solved” for some dumb reason, so he’s off scotch free.

Advice??

@MangoLover11223 Penn does not have EA. It is strictly Early Decision.

Sorry, I confused those two all the time :stuck_out_tongue: same result though right? He’d have to pull all his other apps once accepted?

@MangoLover11223 I don’t know that he would get rescinded. According to you, there’s no proof of anything and they won’t just rescind a student based on word of mouth. Anyone can make up something about someone. And since your school isn’t taking disciplinary action, they might not think there’s any legitimacy behind this accusation.

Of course, everything could work out and he would get rescinded; then have to take a gap year or attend community college. How do you guys feel about that? I’ve never been in this situation so I can’t say I understand the emotions you and your friend are feeling right now but if this is serious, then it’s probably the right thing to at least call.

I’m excited and scared that in ~10 days, I’ll have heard back from all the schools I applied to and that it’ll be time to make a decision! I’m a pretty indecisive person so we’ll see how this goes!

Guys I got into Emerson!!! They are my #1 school and I probably won’t even be able to afford to go (financial aid comes out in April, but I doubt I will be getting close to enough), but it still makes me really happy that they thought I was worth an acceptance! I really hope that the financials work out (the CSS digs deeper than the FAFSA so maybe that’s a good thing because they’ll be able to see that I don’t have a lot available to me) because going to Emerson would be a dream come true…

Congrats!! @Marg532

@MangoLover11223 His admission will not get revoked. There is no proof. An incident happened a few years ago similar to this at another school in my city except that the boy was accepted to Harvard. Harvard didn’t care. In their eyes, will they really deny an intelligent young man who will bring a lot to the school over a bullying incident with no proof? If the high school won’t take disciplinary action, the college couldn’t care less. He will not get rescinded. I’m sorry.

These past few months have been… challenging, to say the least. I’ve been struggling with severe illness that has greatly reduced my quality of life, and it just sucks. Being sick and constantly in and out of the doctor’s office was never a part of my senior year plan – not that they’re a part of anyone’s plan, but I am at the point where I feel more frustrated than I know how to handle. I am eighteen years old, for goodness’ sake. I eat well, I exercise, I try to look after myself. My own body shouldn’t be rebelling against me, yet here I am, basically on the verge of tears every morning because I just feel so darn bad. It is hard enough to feel this sick, but trying to juggle it with four incredibly demanding AP classes definitely doesn’t make it any easier. Sorry for the ramble – just needed to let that out somewhere.

over the moon rn bc I went out of my comfort zone and it totally worked out 10/10

Question: how much should a new prom dress cost? I googled but kept finding drastically different answers

@ski_racer This year mine is $300, last year it was about $400+ alterations. I think it depends on your families financial situation and how much you are willing to spend. I know people who have spent anywhere from less than $100 to $600 (which is insane in my opinion). It all depends on your comfort level.

@ski_racer I got my junior prom dress at JC Penney last year for $120 and upgraded for senior prom with a Macy’s dress for around $260. I wouldn’t be all about spending $700.

@madison2000 @katebnotkatie thank you so much!

@ski_racer I think I spent $125 but I bought it at an outlet during a prom sale so MSRP was $595

@ski_racer mine was about $120 too!

@ski_racer i didn’t but it yet but imma tell you im not spending more than $40 on a dress cuz i usually look ugly anyways

I thrifted mine last year for $5 (was brand new as well), this year I splurged on a dress from a fancy boutique for $50 that looks soo pretty!!

My mom is giving me $200 back as my budget for the dress was $250 lol…I think people think it’s weird that I thrift everything since my family doesn’t even qualify for financial aid, but I think it’s amazing for the environment and in general I’m all about saving up and being frugal. College is expensive!

You all have been amazingly helpful! I also asked this question in the 2018 parents’ thread and they had some good input as well. Because this is my first and only prom, I’m only spending money on a dress (no makeup, I can do hair and nails myself, gonna wear my converse bc heels are ick), and I really like my date, I feel okay about splurging. Thrifting and online shopping are hard for me bc of my body type (5’10"+, thin but with broad shoulders), so I’m going the store route bc I really need to try things on. I also love chicken nuggets, so dinner beforehand will also be cheap. Taking all that, as well as my family’s financial situation into consideration, it seems like a good upper limit is probably around $300 or $325. Thank you so much!

@ski_racer for my sophomore year I bought like nice press on nails by Kiss and it comes with really nice glue and it takes 10 minutes and lasts over a week, looks like you got them done at the salon but it costed like $10 max. If you want to get a corsage and boutonnière but don’t want to pay a bunch of money nicer shopping marts like Harris Teeter and Publix (I don’t know if they’re everywhere but I know they are from Florida and surrounding states).

There is so much diy things that can be done but I think that since it’s a senior prom it’s nice to splurge but it also only one night.
