High School Class of 2018

@ak2018 It definatley can be calming if you are on the right horse. We always joke about how my horse is the horse equivalent of a old, sassy, sarcastic man. I love him to death, and he really is a good horse, but he can be quite the character sometimes. Chickens used to freak me out, but then I started playing with my aunt and uncle’s chickens (they have lots of land with chickens and goats they keep s pets) and I’m more comfortable around them now.

@Madeline25 Cool! I’ve heard it’s best to have a horse that somewhat matches your personality. I don’t know if that is right or wrong.

@Tedalkfan @ak2018 Why don’t your parents want you to get jobs? My mom is constantly harping on my sister and I about getting one over the summer. x)

Has anyone else heard of the GreatBooks program? I’m debating trying to enter their scholarship essay contest so I can go. Unfortunately, the prompt isn’t announced until January 2nd, which only gives me two days of break to start preparing for it. I really should find some kind of summer program to attend (unless the job I hopefully have gets in the way), since I usually just sit around during the summer. Regardless of what happens, I’m kinda excited to look at colleges over the summer. I don’t know when actual college tours are typically taken, but I at least want to start poking around campuses. It also make me very anxious, though. ^^’

@LeopardFire I think it’s because he feels I’m not ready for one. Heck, he feels the same about me getting a drivers permit. Which I why I’m not allowed to take the test until I turn 16 in May. I’m not really caring about getting my license, since I’m not getting a car until I’m going to college. But I need the money to pay for the online classes I want to take. Also, now that you mention it I should look into the GoodReads scholarship.

I just had and idea. What if we tell each other about really great scholarships we find. I’m going to go scholarship hunting anyway.

Also, I wish I could visit college campuses this soon. My parents probably wouldn’t let me.

@ak2018 I think we’re in opposite situations. I’m afraid to apply for jobs and look for programs and all that, but my mom has been pushing me to look into these things. I suppose its better than being in your situation. I think its mostly due to my brother. He’s a senior this year, but he doesn’t have his license, nor is he planning to attend college. My parents have been attending college fairs and financial aid nights regardless, but since none of the information they are learning can help him, they are turning to me, since I’m the best student in my family. I understand where she’s coming from, but sometimes she overestimates my abilities, which is frustrating because I want to approach college applications as realistically as possible.

I haven’t been researching too much, but its a good idea to start. If I find promising scholarships I’ll be sure to link them here.

@ak2018 I can see where that idea could work sometimes. A confident horse and confident rider make for a killer pair. Anxious horse and anxious rider? Not so much. I guess it’s kinda like with humans. Sometimes bonds are formed over similarities, but other times opposites attract. :stuck_out_tongue:

@LeopardFire I’ve ‘poked’ (I like that term for this) around Georgetown and Columbia when we were on vacation to those cities. I’m not going to lie; it’s nerve wracking the first time you do it. I actually didn’t look around as much as I wanted to because I just wanted to leave. You just feel so out of place with all the college students bustling around. When I went to the second one though, I was pretty calm and enjoyed it. It was at Columbia in the late afternoon. It was so gorgeous and quite and serene, especially compared to the rest of Manhatten. I think I’ll probably do state schools in the near future because they are all within a few hours drive from home.

@LeopardFire They think I am not responsible enough. I have done everything to prove my capability (Seriously everything) They just can’t get over the idea that I can do something different than what they did or at all that I am capable of doing something.

I feel bad for you, if you don’t want to do something having that push is bad. I am the type of person that does everything if I feel like it. Which can be bad for some people because you don’t study for test if you don’t “feel” like it. I like to be ahead so these only has affected me once.

@LeopardFire I can now see why you wouldn’t want job. Also, it’s knowing everything there is to know is definitely a good ability, hope they don’t abuse it.

@Madeline25 Yeah I could see that. I’d probably want a slow horse for beginners.

@ak2018 In the horse world, we call the good beginner horses ‘bombproof’ because nothing phases them haha.

Speaking of scholarships, I came across one from the website EditRevise that you can win just based off of your college essay. It definatley seems to me like one worth trying because you already have done the essay anyways and you can get up to 10k. (I may or may not have an excel spreadsheet with scholarship info on it…)

Cool @Madeline25 ! My counselor does something exactly like that! We call it “The Money Tree”. Where she has all of the scholarships put into one document. I might try out that scholarship you said. I would really love to see that spreadsheet, but I know we’re all competing for most of the same ones.

@ak2018 “The Money Tree” haha. My spreadsheet? I could definatley post the ones I gathered up here if y’all are intrested. I haven’t done that much work on it so it’s not very good, but I’m happy to share.

@madeline25 I would really like to see that spreadsheet and I am willing to share the information that I gathered on scholarships and such. What I like about CC is the collaborative atmosphere that is completely different from the atmosphere at my school. It makes me happy.

I’d love to see it @Madeline25 !

Took the words right out of my mouth @Kelvin82 ! Why can’t people like us go to my school! :((

Merry Christmas Eve!

Happy Chanukah! (Even though I know it has already passed)

Happy Kwanzaa! (For anyone who still celebrates)

And happy holidays, to all of the ones I missed. I’m still really sick and now I get painful migraines whenever I bend over. It’ll surely be a Christmas miracle if I’m better by tomorrow! I might need to go to the doctor’s.

@ak2018 I want to major in Astronomy/Planetary Science and Music Performance. Potentially a minor in Mechanical Engineering, but idk.

@LeopardFire I have to read Of Mice and Men and write essays for English and read Chapter 17 in my AP Bio textbook.

@Tedalkfan @ak2018 If you guys ever want to chat about space, etc, I’m down.

@Madeline25 I would like to see that spreadsheet, too!

@Kelvin82 There is no one at my school like the people here on CC. I can’t even count on my Guidance Counselor (Department head with a PhD). He doesn’t really know much about the course schedule at my school. In Career class, he doesn’t even talk about the colleges of the caliber we are potentially applying to in a few years. :-<

Happy Holidays, everyone! I hope you all enjoy your winter vacations!

@frazzledazzle Mechanical Engineering is a great major/minor.

The link below will probably tell you more about it than I can.

Also I am starting to feel better now.

@ak2018 I’m just thinking about it because it would be a good thing to know if you are an astronaut. (I want to become an astronaut)

Oh that’s cool @frazzledazzle ! I think you might want to try Aerospace Engineering. I would never be able to become an astronaut, as I have an incredible fear of heights.
