High School Class of 2020

@AmbitiousWalrus What’s Cosmos?

@AmbitiousWalrus Good luck with COSMOS! What campus/cluster did you apply to?

@Mahindra COSMOS is a four-week overnight summer program for high-schoolers hosted by the UCs. They have 4 campuses (UCSD, UCD, UCSC, and UCI). Each campus has nine different subjects (clusters) all math and science related.

@myactualname Thx

@myactualname UC Davis, Biomedical (7) as my first choice and Mathematics Modeling of Biological Systems (9) as my second.

The 2021 thread is about as active as this thread.

@AmbitiousWalrus I’ve heard Odyssey of the Mind, but for NJ. What is the point of it though, I got a bit of an overview but still cant really tell what it does.

@wydlife Odyssey of the Mind is basically a program where teams attempt to solve problems by using creative solutions. For example, a team might have to design a contraption which would carry goods over a certain distance.

@Mahindra yeah I’ve heard of some peers doing that in middle school

Wow, you guys’ schedules are so rigorous! And here I am struggling to keep a 92 in Algebra II/WTrig. :frowning:

Ok, let’s start this thread up again. What is everyone planning to do over the summer?

I’m going to volunteer at my local public library, take precal, do some research for science fair stuff, maybe shadow a professor at a local university, and (hopefully) get my life together before going into “real” high school (I go to a junior high school).

Ummm, stay home, read, and catch up on Netflix? :expressionless:

Maybe study for precal. Try to completely learn Python and Java. If its a stretch, I want to volunteer for a political campaign, quickly crash course through calculus, and try to get into data science. Btw, anyone watches House of Cards?

It’s kind of funny how people study courses in the summer All I’m going going to do is sleep and volunteer.

I’m volunteering at a local hospital and taking some summer classes to prep for next year.

@Bobbybob444555 I’m not self-studying precal, I’m actually taking it through my school. A lot of people at my school do it so they can go ahead and take AP Calc AB in sophomore year and that way they can be done with pretty much the whole math sequence when they graduate. For example, I’m currently taking Algebra II (9th), then I’ll be taking Precal in the summer and then as follows: AP Calc AB (10th)–>AP Calc BC (11th)–>IB Math HL (12th). That way I’ll be done with all the higher math my school offers with the exception of AP stats and Discrete Math.

Just thought I would clear that up! :slight_smile:

@nerdy01 Oh, I wish my school had that. My state has an online program but it’s too much busy work. By the way, that post wasn’t really directed towards you, I just can’t stand doing summer classes.

@nerdy01 Your lucky.Our school does not have that.

@Bobbybob444555 lol yeah, I did Summer P.E. last year, which actually turned out to be a lot of fun. But, I am not looking forward to Precal 6 hours a day for a month during the summer. Oh well.

I’ll only be able to finish ap calc bc senior year. Is the program that allows you to learn precalc over the summer limited to your school?
