High School Class of 2020

@Microsoft_Ninja thank you, I actually talked to an upperclassman who regrets not joining the IB, because it was more humanities and english based. The IB program at my school holds a little less than 14 kids, some take 1-2 IB classes and the rest are AP

Hi guys, the decision was recently made in my district to reduce from 8 classes to 7 classes, which kind of throws a wrench in my plans. My schedule for the future is tenatively as follows:

IB World Lit HL
IB Math HL
IB French SL
APUSH (AP Gov senior year)
PLTW Principles of Engineering (replace with Sci class senior year)
Band

My problem lies with my science classes for junior and senior year. I don’t know if it will look better to STEM colleges to take IB Bio HL (a two year course) and IB Physics SL (the hardest physics course offered at my school), or to take DC Chem (Chemistry 101 through local university), DC Bio (Biology 101), and also IB Physics SL. I will have to do further study for the Physics SAT II as Physics SL doesn’t cover all of the material tested… do you think the chemistry knowledge would be better than more in depth bio knowledge? Thanks so much!

@cherryturtle

it depends on what you plan on doing in college/life.

PSAT results come out in eight days y’all!!!

@cherryturtle: I second what @Microsoft_Ninja said. It really does depend on what you’re planning to go into. For a pre-med track later in life, the bio/physics combo will be better (although a bio/chem combo would be best), but for most math/physics/astronomy majors, a chem/physics combo would most likely be better.

@thatedgypoet: This might come a little late, but we’re taking a lot of the same courses and my school also has the four-day block schedule. What I find helps me a lot is doing homework the day it’s assigned even though it’s not due for two days — doing this really helps me stay on top of things, especially if you have your difficult classes spread out.

My schedule is:
IB SL Chem
HL 1 IB Calc/AP Calc
Honors English
Spanish 4

Honors Physics
SL IB Financial Lit
HL 1 IB Calc/AP Calc
AP US History

@phanakin I would like to study engineering or math. I most likely cannot take Chem HL because it currently conflicts with band, but no one knows what the master schedule will look like next year. I’ll probably have to take dual credit because it’s offered more than once a day :confused: I really love my electives (French, Band, PLTW) and don’t want to lose one next year :frowning:

Also, what is IB Financial Lit?

We have 8 periods, or as the school calls them, sets, and we 6 classes, with 2 having a skip day. The classes are 55 minutes (like a cross between normal and block scheduling). Also, we have a 63-minute lunch period. Is anybody else’s school like that?

@thehhs12

I think we go to the same school, not kidding. Do you go to lower merion high school because you just described my school.

@cherryturtle: I personally would recommend the SL Chem/double physics combo. I feel like both of these classes give you a way stronger foundation for both engineering or mathematics, moreso than a more in-depth study of biology. I totally understand not wanting to lose electives you love, but if it’s possible to do the chem/physics/physics combo, I’d think that’s best!

Also, financial literacy is a required class in my state, and core Financial Lit is just the basics: money sense and writing checks, etc. IB Financial Lit, however, is basically an intro to IB Econ; we learn about investing in the stock market, real estate investing, etc.

@thehhs12: Oh my gosh, that’s a long lunch period! We have a 30-min lunch period with four classes a day, and each class is an hour and forty-five minutes.

At our school we have 4 alternating block classes for 90 min every day. We also have a 1 hr study hall/lunch period where we can hang out/go to club meetings. Does anyone else have that at their school?

Also, more IB people! Finally!

Hey, could someone give me opinions on AP Stats? I have a 95 in Honors Algebra II this year and was interested in taking it next year. Anyways, here’s my schedule:

AP USH
AP Stats (most likely)
AP Environmental (dual period)
AP English 11
Honors Precalc
Ceramics (have to get an art credit) :stuck_out_tongue:

@ab2002

Hi, this year I’m also doubling up with AP stats and honors precalc

It isn’t that bad, as long as your willing to do some more work. Other than that, it isn’t to bad.

Don’t overload yourself on classes, doing EC’s mean a lot more to elite colleges than spending all your time on your insane courseload.

@Foreboding

what???

that’s not overloading, there are people 7 AP’s in one year, and 5 EC’s

It’s not insane as long as you can handle it

I wasn’t talking to you specifically Microsoft and I agree with what you said below

Is everyone excited for Winter Break?

Have a good day!

@Microsoft_Ninja
You play Yugioh?
@Foreboding
I am. Time to binge watch anime!

I am. My mind is so in the break mood at this point in time I’m just sick of school
lol i need that 10 day break

Our break this year is eight days, which sucks because my sister has over two weeks off, but, I mean, I’ll take what I can get lol

@Mahindra

yeah, I’m pretty good at it.
