The Economist is my favorite news source, what do you guys read?
Hi - checking back CC after a while. We just finished the 1st semester of soph and starting the second semester this week. Did ok in the 1st sem - one A and one A- in finished courses; one A and A- each in the other 2 full year courses (hopefully I will bring them both to A by end of this sem). This sem should be interesting - have to work hard on courses, and 4 AP tests in May and have tentative plan to do subject SAT in June/Aug. busy days ahead.
One question for you guys: Is 4-year foreign language is “required” by all top-tier univ? So far I have taken 3 years of Spanish (Spanish 1-3 courses from middle school to 10th grade). Junior year, am debating whether to take Spanish 4 or double up in one of the sciences - my intended major is STEM (not sure about specific major though). I am intending to research on some specific univ…but thought of asking you guys about any generic info. Personally not sure about univ as well but most names that I have some inclination are in top-50 or so univ. Any advice about taking/not-taking Spanish 4 - send them along. TIA.
@hs2020kid will you have any openings in your senior year schedule? If not, you might want to wait until senior year to double up. If you’re planning to apply to Ivies or other top schools, not having 4 years of a language will probably put you at a disadvantage. How much of a disadvantage? That just depends on the individual school. Some schools (liberal arts schools especially) absolutely require 4 years, while others just recommend it. A “recommendation” becomes more than a recommendation when most applicants follow it, though. In other words: “Required” means required, “recommended” basically means required, and if the school doesn’t mention it, it’s still recommended that you take it.
Exception: if you can’t make your schedule work, or if taking a language would take away one of your core classes or a STEM class related to your major. I’m pretty sure STEM schools care a little less about other subject areas than liberal arts schools. If you can make it work, though, an extra year of Spanish can’t hurt you!
@trumpetmathgeek I love the economist! It is one of the few non-biased sources in this crazy political era.
@Microsoft_Ninja I didnt take any language classes so far
hmm, if you haven’t taken any languages yet, then in that situation, it’s up to you.
@Mahindra, @trumpetmathgeek I also read the Economist! It is my favorite as well.
@hs2020kid Most colleges “recommend” it. This pretty much means it’s required. So in essense, if you don’t have four credits, take another year.
@Mahindra @trumpetmathgeek @thehhs12 lmao u guys read the economist? I’m too lazy so I just look at their snapchat stories lol. Sometimes I read USA Today.
I know that I’m going to get a lot of hate for this, so please mind me. I’m very sorry; however, my favorites are CNN< NBC, and Time.
Have a good day!
@anthonytheboy You are an absolute moron… I’m kiding! I actually like The Economist a lot. NBC imo is very deluded. Savannah Guthrie literally argued with Paul Ryan on air about politics. Journalism and the news is not supposed to be associated with ANY bias. I think Time is good, but I have to disagree with NBC on that one.
@ab2002 Lol, thanks for understanding. I respect your opinions as well. Earlier, I did not mean to put CNN < NBC, meant to put a comma, sorry about that. I’ve never heard of The Economist. Seeing all the positive reviews you all are giving of the news, I will have to check it out!
Have a good day!
@anthonytheboy They tend to be one of the highest ranking sources for reliability.
@ab2002 Nice! I’ll look into it.
Have a good day!
Is it about…
the economy?
@ab2002 Speaker Ryan isn’t really an economist…
@thehhs12 Cool!
@anthonytheboy NBC is actually ok.
But in general, I would say the BBC is probably the best because all the American networks really dont cover international news and are too ratings driven
@Mahindra LMAO. I never said he was an economist. NBC is not actually news. I am not a Trump supporter, but everything they talk about is Trump. They cover actual news for like ten minutes and the rest is sexual assault allegations and SJWs. NBC asked Paul Ryan to talk about an issue and Savannah literally argued with him and asked questions about Trump doing illegal stuff.
@hs2020kid u should do spanish 4 next year and double up on science in senior year
@hs2020kid u should try to achieve fluency by senior year - that would actually look/be really good
