High School Class of 2020

@spicybiracial I am sadly not one to talk about ACT prep, but good luck in your endeavors! I’m sure with practice, you will receive a higher ACT score. Also, thanks for that message above.

Have a good day!

I’m currently at Cornell for Telluride (TASS), and it’s already shaping up to be one of the best experiences of my life, and we’re not even five days in. I will admit that I do get homesick at times.

But regardless, I definitely encourage all of you lovely people to apply for TASP.

@spicybiracial: Ooh, I took APUSH as well! I didn’t take AP Lang, but we can at least commiserate over APUSH, especially since AP results are coming out in a little more than a week (roughly around there, depending on where you live!) Dual enrollment classes are fantastic as well, especially because those credits are just as transferrable as AP scores (if not moreso). I’m not a big sociology person myself (big on psychology, though!), but I know you’ll do fantastic.

Also, thank you very much! I’m sure your academic side of things is already fantastic, but motivation to improve is never wasted. I’m so sorry to hear you’re disheartened by your practice ACT scores; know this! That there are plenty of brilliant people out there who repeatedly get screwed over by standardized tests. Some people’s minds click with it, and some people’s don’t.

I personally didn’t prep very much. Top of my list, though? The Official ACT Prep Book (otherwise known informally as the Big Red Book.) It’s written by the very same people who wrote the ACT, so it’s super accurate, moreso than Princeton Review or Barron’s, etc. I took 3 (and a half, I guess — I never finished that last one) practice tests and then went in for the real ACT, and boom.

Exposure is key!

Thank you very much @spicybiracial. I hope that we can reach our respective dream schools in two years. Anyways, I really want to get into Brown University but some other colleges I’m considering are Cornell, Duke, John Hopkins, Columbia, USC, Dartmouth, Upenn, Rice, Ponoma. Even if I get rejected by majority of ivies, I will be so happy if I can get accepted to even one of them. I just took practice ACT Test and got 33 composite from Princeton Review(35 English, 35 Math, 35 Reading, and 28 Science(oof)). I usually get low science and reading scores. I never scored high in english section. For math, I’m not suprised. I really want to raise my score so I’m going to study my butt off over the summer until next school year.

@phanakin What’s Cornell like? I’m interested in applying there.

@collegeready33 me too. If I get rejected by brown, my next hope is Cornell.

@collegeready33 @IvyDreamer1234 I don’t know much about the school but I have been to the campus and surrounding area while driving to Canada. It’s very isolated, and in upstate NY it’s mainly small towns of 1000 or stuff like that. There’s a lot of hills and a lot of fields and forests nearby. Cornell itself is located on a hill and there are many older style buildings that are typical of any older institution but there are some modern building sprinkled in there. Cornell is on the edge of Ithaca but is not far at all. The town of Ithaca is a typical college town of about 30,000 and there’s not that much to do. It’s basically like a small city such as Providence or New Haven but smaller in area and there are a good amount of restaurants in town. It’s too isolated for me, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful campuses I have seen.

@phanakin How did you get into TASP? That’s amazing!

@collegeready33 @IvyDreamer1234 Most of what @Max147 has said is accurate! I personally disagree with there being not much to do; in Cornell’s campus, there are at least two libraries (right across from each other), as well as a gym with a pool, a basketball court, etc. They have a health clinic right on campus.

Within the campus itself, there is a place called Collegetown, where there’s everything from a 7-11 to a sushi place, to a place that sells dim sum, to places that sell mac and cheese or cookies or pita dishes. The campus is indeed very hilly; there’s lots of uphills and downhills. It’s utterly gorgeous though, with plenty of trees and shrubbery and wildlife (countless chipmunks and squirrels, and I’ve twice seen deer!) There are gorges, and there’s even a waterfall that you can take a trail down to see.

Apparently, there is even a place of Cornell referred to as the “Harry Potter of Cornell,” due ro the architecture style resembling Hogwarts. Annually, the residents of this area do a Harry Potter-related event and dress up with cloaks and wands.

The architecture of Cornell is a mix of extremely modern and extremely vintage, sometimes righr next to each other. The Physical Sciences building, for example, is both smashed together. It can be a little jarring.

@needtosucceed27: Haha, I actually got into TASS, not TASP! They’re essentially the same thing, except one’s for rising juniors and the other’s for risinf seniors. The application process is really really long (three five-page essays, plus a bunch of short answer), but it’s rewarding to move onto the interview round.

Personally, I think TASP got the short end of the straw. We (TASS) stay in the Telluride House, but they stay in a frat house (which means communal bathrooms).

@phanakin I meant there’s not much to do outside of campus. Pretty much every college has a gym and athletic facilities and libraries so it was assumed.

@Max147: Sure, but not every college has hiking and museums on campus. Not to mention that Ithaca has an extensive bus service that can take you to Ithaca Mall (where there’s things like laser tag) or Syracuse Mall, which is bigger.

I visited both Northwestern and Notre Dame this weekend. I loved Northwestern! Notre Dame on the other hand, was weird for me. I am not Catholic, and I felt like I was an outsider there.

@ab2002 Good to know about Notre Dame. I had my doubts before and I didn’t love the school but now I will definitely take it out of consideration.

@Max147 I tried to be open-minded, but it is just too much. I am completely being around Catholicism, but it seemed like if you are not Catholic, you are an outcast. Especially when all your friends would be going to engage in Catholic-related activities, and you would have to be odd one out. I guess it’s not for everyone.

Hello everyone!

@ab2002 I know I’m late to the discussion, but I’m so sorry to hear about your car accident. I’m glad to hear that you’re okay and I wish everyone involved quick recovery.

@phanakin Congratulations on getting into TASS!

@needtosucceed27 I noticed you’re interested in applying to Purdue! What would you say their general reputation is? I have a lot of friends who are considering going there too, and I haven’t ruled it out since they have a great engineering program, but my perspective of the school might be a bit skewed since I lived relatively nearby so it’s pretty common for people to my school to apply there. Sorry for the wordiness, but I’d be interested in hearing why it made your list of potential colleges.

Also, is there a way to delete discussion threads/posts that I started/posted? I haven’t seen a way and I’m guessing that they won’t be removed unless there’s a privacy concern or it breaks the CC discussion rules somehow, but some people from my school discovered my account. One of my friends found something I’d posted and figured out it was me, and even though it wasn’t anything I was “private” about (or I wouldn’t have put it out on the web), it was a bit embarrassing.

Anyone else excited for AP scores to be released?

I don’t believe that there is any way to delete comments. You may be able to able a moderator to take it down if you message one. And I am very excited for APs and SATs to come out so I can finally get my parents off my back.

No, you can’t delete posts after the edit time. I am so nervous for my AP scores, but I am also excited.

I took the AP euro test late and I’m so nervous. From what people have been saying about the May 28th tests, I’m glad I didn’t have to take those.
