High School Class of 2020

I’m waiting on Macro, Micro, and Psych :-S

You can also use a vpn trial from one of the states that has it released tomorrow (best bet is a CA Vpn) to access scores from anywhere.

I am beyond disappointed right now:

AP Euro: 3
AP Psych: 4

My parents are finally happy for once with a 5 on Bio.

I got a 4 on AP Macro and I’m so happy bc it was my first AP and I literally guessed on all the FRQs.

Got a 5 in ap chem. Can’t wait for the next aps.

@ab2002, you still did very well, and I know it may not seem like you did. Excellent job!

Should I self report an AP score of 3 on common app?

Congrats on everyone’s scores, even to those who feel disappointed. Y’all are amazing, and the fact that you took an AP class at all is hella impressive.

I myself am pretty pleased. 5 on Calc BC (5 subscore), 5 on APUSH.

@reallypanicked 3 is proficient, and AP scores can only help from 3 on. Don’t hide scores unless they’re 1s or 2s (which colleges will assume they are if you’ve taken an AP class without the test.)

@phanakin I disagree that 3’s on will help. If you @reallypanicked is aiming for a top school, 3’s do not help his/her case but rather hurt it. I took a few minutes to do the math based off USNWR rankings(Not perfect, but just a measure that I used). Out of 3.9 million graduating seniors, 1% will go to top 20 universities and top 7 liberal arts colleges(Up to Georgetown and Pomona). Even if you’re goals are top 50 universities and top 20 liberal arts schools, it is probably only around 5-10% of graduating seniors(Too much math for me, you can take the time to calculate it). Getting a 3 means that you are only in the top 60%, which is not even close to 1% or even top 10%. This also means 4’s do not greatly help your case especially for elite schools since it means you are outside the top 5-10%. Collegeboard also annoyingly does not give you an exact score or percentile so all colleges know is that you were in the top 10-40% generally. So they kind of have to assume that you were around the top 25% even if you were one question away from a 5 because of collegboard’s annoying policies. If you are aiming for elite schools this does not help your case at all. While it is true that generally people who take APs are better students, it still leaves you around the top 4-5% of overall students including those not taking APs by getting a 4 which, if you cannot tell, is outside the top 1% that attend elite schools. While getting a 4 won’t hurt because colleges don’t need you to excel academically as long as there are other factors to make up for this, not getting any 5’s probably will. However, a 4 may be beneficial especially if your class at school had grade deflation. It can also help if your score of a 4 is also better than the rest of your application academically. Colleges also do understand you have multiple APs to prepare for which could be harming your scores, but as a general rule, a 4 will neither hurt nor help your application. Taking the AP will help though, because it showed you challenged yourself. I have also heard from my mom about a former Harvard admissions officer saying that 4’s don’t really help your application and she is very knowledgeable about this stuff.

@Max147: Thank you for taking the time to write out such a well-crafted argument!! I based mine off of two things:

  1. I have talked with an admissions counselor as well (not from Harvard, but from an Ivy League) who says that even bad AP scores are not necessarily red flags. Worst case scenario, it tips the school off to there maybe being grade inflation (if you had an awesome grade but like a 1). However, getting a 4, a 3, or even a 2 and 1 never STOPS someone from getting into a top school, especially AP scores really truly matter after you’re already admitted. I know plenty of people with blemishes on their AP record who’ve gotten into top schools, since they’re strong in other aspects. If you’re strong in another aspects, a 3 is not going to break you.

  2. When colleges see that you didn’t report your score, but that you took an AP class, they automatically assume the worst: that you failed. A 3 is passing. It’s better to prove them wrong with a passing score, even if it isn’t a 5, than it is to let them think you failed, because that would hurt you worse.

Besides, I’m not sure what schools @reallypanicked are aiming for, and I’m certain that policies on this differ from school to school!!

@phanakin I agree that a 1-4 will never stop anyone from getting into any school and is never a deal breaker. There are so many aspects and factors to college admission. I’m just saying for people who aren’t as strong in other aspects and are on the border, a low score can put them on the wrong side of the border and in some situations it can be better to not report the score.

@ab2002 I’m really sorry to hear about the 3 in AP Euro. It must be very hard to take in. But great job on AP Psychology!

Good luck to the rest of you who are checking your AP exam scores, and congrats to the ones who got a good score.

Have a good day.

I surprisingly got a 4 on apes and a 3 on world history. I thought for sure I got a 2 on both because I didn’t study or prepare lmao. Good job for everyone else that got there scores and good luck to those who are waiting.

I just checked my AP Scores! I got 5s on Macro, Micro, and Psych

Any IB diploma candidates on here???

@ragingmaddie: I am! Can I ask your planned SLs and HLs, and which tests (if any) you’re taking next year?

I visited Yale today. The campus was gorgeous (as expected) and I had loads of fun exploring with my family. Tomorrow I have my first college interview at Mount Holyoke.

@phanakin Yeah, of course! My SLs are Geography, German and Math Studies, and my HLs are English, History (History of the Americas junior year and Topics senior year), and Biology (all of the easier classes, haha). I think I’m taking the Geography exam next year. What classes are you doing?
