HKU or HKUST

Sonotocool:
I am planning to study in HKU.
well i have bunch of korean friends in HK, and they said life in HK is great.
im not entirely sure how many koreans are currently attending HKU but i think it’s fairly large (of course not as large as number of koreans at UIUC).
I also heard that HK generally has large korean population.

Q: If you guys were had to choose between HK and USA where would you guys go and why?
A: I was accepted in a bunch of decent schools in the US and UK too - but I guess for the most obvious reason, cost benefit analysis, HK is much better in that sense - because its so so so much cheaper. And I guess I’m a typical Chinese, didn’t wanna burden my family though I really hope to go to somewhere foreign for my tertiary education. And I do take oldnite’s point, I’m going to exchange in the US in Jan.

Q:How many koreans are attending in HKU?
A: I don’t know, but I do know some Koreans around the campus.

Q: Are you also an applicant? if so, what degree are you taking?
A: Nope, I’m a current student in HKU BBA Intl Bus and Global Mgmt - or UST’s GBUS equivalent.

sonotcool: For Undergraduate I would choose Hk over USA, considering the present job market in Asia, Hk opening the doors to Mainland China where the economy is quite amazing right now, and the cost of an Undergraduate degree in US costing nearly a quarter million dollars, whereas the same degree from Hk will cost a nearly 1/4th and also a year less!!
If you are keen on going to US, do your postgrad from there…
There are a lot of Koreans at both HKU and HKUST…
UIUC is extremely well reputed all over the world and so are HKU and HKUST, so you can not go wrong by picking anyone of them! Wisconsin and Madison and Mich are extremely cold and I dont really like the weather there… the weather in Hk is comparatively as good as heaven  Life in Hk is great from what I have heard from friends…
The US degree phobia is slowly slowly fading away with the rise in Asian economy and education system and quality… HKUST is an American oriented Uni, and quite a fine one too! Hku is British and again very well rooted…
You’r from S.Korea I’m guessing… there are a lot of Koreans going to Hk Unis this year and I have a lot of Korean friends soo they tell me the same thing, about reputation of Asian Unis rising with time and already very well regarded…

@ grand : wot bout ppl at hkust … how friendly are they…??
Is the language of professors there understandable.??

arpitjain: I’m interrupting as this Q wasn’t for me but I happen to know the answer… People at HKUST are very friendly, its easy to get friendly with the local students. It is easy to become friends with the Internationals as well, but if you want more insight into the culture in Hk and their life then I would recommend hanging out with them
The professors are really good and their language generally is not an issue, cause they don’t have a very strong cantonese/chinese accent while speaking in English… And yes they do teach in English, just if you were wondering… lol

but i just hrd that locals over dere do nt spk to intl’s at al…!! as in they dont befriend intls easily…!!

This is so frustrating, no replies, no updates, nuthing from HKU. I applied on the late of Jan :-(

arpitjain: Its a lie! I have a lot of friends at HKUST who are all Internationals and they have loads of people to speak to, and really good friends too!!

Muntasir: Call them and ask them whats taking so long?! maybe they are missing some materials and cant be bothered to contact you or something like that…

Hey guys,
Which coed dorm in HKU has the most number of international students?
and which dorm has the least?

Q:wot bout ppl at hkust … how friendly are they…??

A: I think there is no one fixed categorisation of friendly or not friendly. Every single place there would be friendly and less friendly people. It depends on which group of people you hang out with. The language of professors will depend on what professors you have, perhaps a larger proportion of Mainland/Local professors compared to other universities (which is usual given we’re in HK), so do expect some local accent or Mainland accent, but nonetheless, there are no issues in understanding them. HKers are actually pretty very friendly in general, I don’t recall any single issue of racial conflict/discrimination in HKU, in this respect I think its quite a good atmosphere - it depends on your initiative in getting to know them - but don’t act really odd, cos some HKers do get put off haha.

Q: This is so frustrating, no replies, no updates, nuthing from HKU. I applied on the late of Jan :frowning:
A: Some faculties do process applications later than others, if you reailse people who applied to the same course as you did already have heard of their decision, then you should politely email the admission office.

Q: Which coed dorm in HKU has the most number of international students?
and which dorm has the least?
A: You can look onto Cedars - Accommodation, and look at the largest quota for Non-local students - there you should expect the largest number of intl student - since quotas are set.

grand : Do you ever regret going to HK instead of US?

@ Grand: wen i cald them up , i hardly understood wot the lady at the admissions office was trying to say…?? …that scared me up a bit as i thot eva the prof’s wud have the same accent…!!
their accent is compl diff from d western accent.!!

Hi, I would like to know if the chances for late admission for HKU Dentistry course are very slim for international students? And has anyone received any offers from HKU Dentistry? I have yet to receive any news from HKU ):

@fsaith-yes very slim but not impossible…if you are an outstanding student then its very much possible…are you an intl??? i suppose you are…
good luck

i have applied bachelor of science in late january but so far i have heard nothing from hku. does anyone applied the same course has get the offer??? argggg… i checked the hku website but all the choice are stil under consideration… i wonder when i can get the any confirmation from them… stressed…

I knw dude… its so freaking stressful! Everyday I cum online with a hope of any sort of conformation from HKU nd HKUST but all it say is “Under Consideration” ^_^

I say God damn it… how long will it take u guyz to finish ur consideration… i knw, um speaking from shear frustration nd um panicking too! Damn, its spoiling my A2 :-(

Q: i hardly understood wot the lady at the admissions office was trying to say…??
A: Well remember, she is just a lady at the admission office, not professors who are well qualified to teach you.

As for the rest who are waiting for HKU results, don’t even bother checking the Online status, it never changes, perhaps a few weeks after you get your offer for your email. So its pretty safe to say that if you haven’t gotten your email, you still havent received your admission decision.

For Dentistry, international students’ chances would be slim.

Muntasir: Dont even bother checking the online status as they update it weeks after emailing you your admission decision!

Asking any HKUST-ers!

How hard it is to change majors once you’re in?

And if any of you are knowledgeable about this (i.e. you’re taking them, friends are taking them), anyone elaborate on the content/rigour/competitiveness/reputation among students/job prospects/etc. of these majors:

applied physics(management science option)
quantitative finance

I’m mainly interested in these two but maybe also about applied maths and mathematical sciences(management option)?

Thank you in advance!

Hey! I’m totally new here. I submitted my application to HKU in the late Feb, and so far I’ve got no feed back at all. I’m wondering, if anyone could let me know if it is possible to check the application status online for my application? Or I shouldn’t bother since they will send an email faster than change the status? Thank you!
