HKU or HKUST

@Oldnite1,
I applied for the same faculty as you since late Feb (as late applicant) . However, I got nothing back till now…:frowning: May I ask when did you got the offer from HKU? Are there any conditions? Will there be an interview? Thank you!

ASUKAM: Don’t bother checking the online status as they don’t update it for weeks even after emailing your admission decision… The best way to get an answer is to call them during their office hours, emailing process may be cumbersome at times due to the number of applicants emailing the admissions office…

well i did apply to both of them(HKU and HKUST) in late march but i mailed them to process my application faster as i have to respond to local universities…

shoot. I got denied by bachelor of engineering. But under consideration on Bachelor of Science (Quantitative Finance) and Bachelor of Business Administration / Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance. Just curious about that, since I am denied by my first choice, did that also imply the fact that my 2nd and 3rd choice will also be denied?

iversponz: They view all diff options individually depending on how competitive they are this year, so you being denied admission to any 1 does not affect the others…

I am facing the same pro here. US, UK or HK.
US for a better engineering education.
UK for me will a different life experience since I am a chinese student in US for a high school degree.
HK. for saving some money.

Not sure yet, but since i couldn’t find that huge amount of money to continue my study at US, I guess if hk took me, I will be there.

Just called the HKU admission, it’s very hard to talk to that lady in English.
She said she couldn’t let me know the result through the phone and all I can do is simply wait for the online update.

iversponz: If I were you I would pick Hk not only because its cheap but also you’ll save ONE year and HKUST is also a University after the American pattern of education and quite a quality one too, soo its a real good place to be !
But I’m not you, I am I, and so I’m confused too !! I want to go to Imperial just for the brand name, not a big fan of London or the people there… US because of the brand name too! But I want to go to Hk because of the exposure I know I would get there would not only be a safe one but also unparalleled ! besides everything goes in its favour too… But I’m leaving it on my Final IB results, if I make the conditional offer to Imperial then I might consider it as an option besides HKUST, if I dont make it to anywhere else then US (Rose-Hulman or Georgia Tech/Michigan)…

@Sarthak19118: dude, Rose-Hulman actually accept me and G tech put me on waitlist. In fact, I am going to visit Rose-Hulman next week. Out of curiosity, are you a guy or not, since there is a 4:1 sex ratio there. Huh, Imperial is a great school. speaking of UK, I almost decided to go to U of Edinburgh, but my parents said no . U from Shanghai? I am from Shenzhen. See, HK is so close to my hometown, that is another reason for me to apply there.

@ iversonpz: sadly mate , even hkust has similar sex ratio…80 % of dem bein guys…!!

@arpitjain, shoot, we should all be accepted to NYU. since the female population there is 50%, lesbian 20%, gay20%, pure straight man 10%.

The stat shows to me if you are a guy, then NYU is the place to go.

iversponz: Yeah I’m from Shanghai. And i’m a guy sorry to disappoint ! lol…
Can you tell me how Rose-Hulman is after you have visited the Uni ?! That’d be great! Oh and please tell me how Terre Haute is ?

After APPLICATION:
Some people would get Interview. Especially those who apply for SCHOLARSHIPS. But some don’t even have interview. My friend who did not do any interview actually already got his offer from FACUTLY OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS. It really depends on individual. But don’t worry too much if you have not hear anything from there. :)

About DENTISTRY:
Faculty of Dentistry in HKU accepts 50 applicants per year. It is very competitive for locals, so it is definitely HARD to get into it if you are International Students. You have to be an excellent student with high achievements and also an all-rounded student. HKU Dentistry Faculty is one of the best in the world. That is why, it is very hard to get in.

About RESULT:
You should hear from HKU around April to mid-May. Due to the large amount of applicants both from Mainland and all other countries in the world. It takes time for the faculty to consider and give offer to all of applicants. They will SEND YOU EMAIL to CONFIRM YOUR OFFER. So make sure you can check your email properly.

About GENDER RATIO:
There are MORE GIRLS than GUYS in HKU… and you have to visit the campus to see how they are I think :)

gd2318: I didn’t interview for both admission and scholarship, but I guess I will have one for housing for Hall VII !

hey guys i got conditional offers to hkust global biz and hku accounting and finance.
what should i choose? in terms of job prospects and recognition in asia and in hong kong, which one is better and why?
i really need your help :S

@oldnite1,
First, I’m so sorry that I’m not able to answer your question. However, I got a question for you here. When did you apply for HKU? When have you got the feedback from them? Cuz I applied to BBA (acct&finance) @HKU as well in late Feb, and so far got nothing back. I am sorry to bother, and I appreciate your reply =]

oldnite1: I also got an e-mail from HKUST that I was accepted into the Global Biz program.

I’m also waiting for HKU to give me a notice and also weighing the offer from CUHK, but

seems we could go to school together!! (That is if you decide to go to UST)

It’s been what 3 wks since my phone interview and it was really starting to kill me…

Oh… and oldnite1, I PMed sme at the forum couple days ago and he gave me a great answer from a local’s perspective.

He said the BBA program at HK is HKUST>HKU, but in terms of Global biz and IBGM,

It should be IBGM=Global biz.

Okay looks like the HKUST Biz department just released a bunch of decisions to Korean students? I got into Econ/Finance as well.

I’m just wondering how’s the program in comparison with Quantitative Finance? Both are BSc programs offered in the biz department and i’m interested in both.

And I really want more statistics about HKU and HKUST. It sucks they don’t provide such plethora of information like the american unis do! Anyone can help me out here? Especially numbers regarding demographics (% of mainlanders/locals/intls, sex ratio, undergrad vs grad population, etc.)

Anyway congrats to all who got offers!

Congrats to all of u who got offers :D

@ chriskim12- I applied in the same major… wen did u apply? nd wats ur academic result nd eca’s? Just tryn to figure out my chances, kinda tensed with my application!

Your kind response will surely get me some relieve :p

chriskim12: You’re Korean as well? I just received my offer today by e-mail. Congrats to you too.

And about the statistics, for UST, I heard about 12% are int’l students. But most of them are

exchange students that only stay at UST for more or less a year. This is what the biz prof

told me during the phone interview(the stats should be right if I remember correctly…)

Plus if I remember correctly, of the around 10% of int’l undergrads receiving offers this year,

half are from mainland, and the other half are complete int’ls. From what I know and hopefully

rightly remember, that’s all. Hopefully other ppl can help you out with the demographics.
