HKU or HKUST

@ HKUSTYAY- I will pay within this week. You just got to do bank draft for University of Hong kong and post it to the designated address.

Btw for which major did u get accepted? Did u get a conditional offer? If yes, wat is it?

I paid the deposit about 3 weeks ago and got confirmation today. I paid using a bank draft made payable to The univeristy of Hong Kong and sign the offer letter… Thats if u accept the offer. If u reject, than dont bother with the bank draft jus sign the reject part of the offer letter…

Gd Luck…

P.s See u around in campus and classes muntasir (also in BEcon & BeFin course)…

@ Joshtn- Thanx dude, hope to c ya soon :-)

I got a conditional offer for 2 A’s (or above) and 2 B’s (or above). Um currently doin my A lvls nd will be sitting for it in May/June. Btw is this condition applicable for my A2 (12th grade) or my entire A lvl which includes AS (11th grade) and A2 (12th grade)?

Any1 who got a conditional offer, pls do help! Or any1 who can…

Has anyone who is applying for engineering (especially Computer Engineering heard from HKUST?

still heard nothing from hku… :-(

@hkulover,
Same situation here, either do HKUST. So sad… Don’t worry, maybe it’s just take time?
Good luck!

I am still waiting for HKUST also. Should I call them to know what’s going on since May 1 reply deadline is closing in for all other colleges?

Muntasir
Ive been looking into all dorms very generally and i thought st. john’s or swire are pretty good. i have to do some more research though…
I was accepted into accounting and finance with conditional offer of ib 35 (with a1 sl english 5 or above and HL math 5 or above).
how about you?

did anyone here get global business offer from HKUST?
mind sharing your IB conditional offers?

mine was IB 36 or above which was surprising cus i heard last year it was IB 38.

@asukam and others waiting for hkust offer

it does takes time, especially for those who applied late near the end of application date, for example you completed your document on 30th of march this year

according to my friend, who applied last year, he got the offer on early June, that’s why he didn’t take the offer because the local university had admitted him and he had paid full tuition fees for the first year

Hi guys, been following this thread for quite a while, but this is gonna be my first post yet.
I got offer from HKU, for BBA… and now contemplating on acceptance hahah.
I’m sure u’ve heard this question before, but just for curiosity’s sake:

Why did u choose HK as a place to study? Instead of the top unis in US or UK known for their quality and prestige.

Personally, I didn’t even know bout HKU till a friend told me he’s applying there, and I was like, hey why not hahaha. I mean, studying business in HK should be good cos it will have much to do with learning the China economy (which is growing tremendously) and business.

The catch tho, is that I speak zero cantonese and barely sufficient chinese. And personally would prefer a fluently spoken English environment. But we’re studying for the future no? So all these little sacrifices should mean little hahah.

Sorry if I rambled. Really appreciate ur comments. Thanks!

I chose HKU and HKUST because they are both very well-known in my home country (korea) and asia, and plus it is much much much cheaper than studying abroad in US. you can also get a BBA degree in 3 years whereas in US it will take like 4 years. I guess that saves time… :P

Oh and i also heard that most of HK ppl can speak English (english is one of HK’s national language!) so i don’t think it is that difficult to get around HK without knowing canto or mandarin.

oldnite1: You’re Korean?? That’s new info!!

hkubiz: I’m pretty much same as oldnite1. Plus, as a Korean citizen, the 1 year less thing is

really a huge merit cause we koreans need to serve military service for 2 years. (only for men though…)

And to add a little to ivnpolaris’ comments (And to those waiting for their offer from HKUST):

I submitted my application to HKUST on the 31st of January

Sent my January SAT results around the 20th of February

and got the phone interview on the 22nd of March

and got my admission offer for Global Biz on the 13th of April.

@kyubaek: dude, wen did u get to hear frm dem aftr submitin your app on 31st january. as in wen did u come to know bout ur intw dates.?

arpitjain: Invitation for the phone interview was sent on the 12th of March

and i heard from them that they successfully received my application on the 4th of February.

and to fix the info that I wrote above,

they received my January SAT results on the 1st of March…

Thanks to oldnite1 n kyubaek90!

It seems many Koreans go to HKU eh? I’m from Indonesia, and in my scholarship interview in Jakarta there was this Korean dude too haha. Too bad I didnt get the scholarship, guess 39 IB points rnt good enuff (yeah shouldn’t have slacked so much haha).

@Oldnite, I have a mixed impression wrt the use of English in HKU… in some other forum its said that the foreigners in HKU constitute only 10%. Thats kinda few. Very few.

Do u guys by any chance have the stats on the nationalities of undergrads in HKU? Just wondering.

BTW, (this is very off topic) if u guys got offers from HKU and ANU (Australia National University), which one will u choose? FYI, ANU is world-ranked as 16th this yr by THES.

Thanks!

hkubiz: I’m predicted a 40 now but was predicted a 38 when I got the admission offer + full scholarship, so i’m guessing i got it on the basis of my CCAs etc…
Hk is full of foreigners and i’m sure no one would disagree ! There are 10 times more foreigners there than there are in Shanghai !
The English in Hk is very good, as compared to mainland china and besides you should be concered about the Uni not the people outside the campus… on campus majority of, if not all, people would speak in “good” English and there will be quite a decent number of internationals! besides the lesser no. of internationals there are the better it is cause then you’ll stand out ! :)

Go HKUST !

@Sarthak: Hmm yeah I read about HKUST offering full scholarship to 38 points and above, but for HKU it may be a different case… BTW which course did u apply for in HKUST?
And why did u choose HK over the US n UK top unis? I’m guessing you are from Shanghai?

Haha what do you mean by ‘good’ - that sounds so ominous! And if I do stand out for my English, that would be worrying since my english is not that good imo!

hkubiz:
I have applied for Mechanical Engineering in UST…
Well I have answered that a lot of times but will do it again since you asked, Hk over US/Uk:

  1. proximity to home
  2. Cost
  3. Climate/ Life
  4. Job Market and growing potential
  5. Similarity in culture and safety (as compared to London etc)
  6. Opportunity to strengthen my Mandarin and grasp of the Chinese culture
    etc etc

haha… by “good” I mean decent enough for you to understand and converse with them… and no one is going to discriminate on the basis of your spoken english skills! Dont worry about that, Hk isnt Mainland China, i.e. English shouldnt be a problem at all !
