HKU or HKUST

somehow there won’t be the word “easy” in pursuing scholarship, moreover, admittance, especially to one of asian top university (or even world)

I read that written examinations in HK universities are done with pen and paper, do any of you know if this is right, or do we get to use computers?

I went to Jakarta’s scholarship interview and noticed that many applicants was not able to converse in proper english… well at least in the group interview i notice majority had difficulty in english… so yea… just an input from me to hkubiz worried about english…

But if u did well in ur IB, i am sure ur english is fine… :D

Nice meeting u all! Haha I was kidding about my English… its not that bad lar  Was just wondering if they speak English ‘better’ than singaporeans do…

@Sarthak: Great, that’s about what I consider too! For overall growth, I think HK is definitely good, even for its competitive environment! But yeah I was just wondering if anyone who is qualified to go for the top US and UK unis would choose HKU or HKUST as first choice. Well it rly doesn’t matter any more I guess. BTW where r u from?

@ivnpolaris: Yeah I agree. But for HKU at least, they do more leniently admit the internationals for the sake of ‘going global’… well that’s what I heard at least. And oh ranking wise, HKU varies - in THES, it’s like top in Asia and 24th in world. In Shanghai Jiao Tong world rankings , its not even in the top 100 (if i’m not mistaken). But yeah I believe HKU is rly good, being the top uni in the (extremely) academically competitive HK :)

@joshtn: Which day did u go for the interview? I went there Feb 19, which is the second day out of the two days available for interview. Hmm u don’t happen to be a Korean do u? :)

hkubiz- I went to the first day interview at JIS… I am not Korean… hahaha… i am malaysian but i finished my high school at AIS… australian international school… you??

@joshtn: oh hahaha well i had my interview in the other school haha.
I studied in ACS (Indep) Singapore. Oh BTW did you get the scholarship? :)

Hey everyone!
My major concern is after graduation. Cuz I don’t think we are more competitive than the local students if we both graduate from a local university in HK, if we are going job hunting in HK. I have some experience in HK before, and my father’s friend is in charge of a company there, according to their reply, they think they would like foreigner who graduate from a “foreign uni” rather than a foreigner graduate from a local one, no matter it’s HKU or HKUST, they make no difference. For the HKU and HKUST, they will prefer local student, cuz they think they get to work easier than us foreigner who stay in HK for 3 years…I’m from Japan, in Japan, the HKU is well known, but not good enough to get a decent job in Tokyo, Japanese prefer the US or the British universities. This thing will push me in the middle, if I choose to graduate from HK, besides, with all the busy studies in HKU, I really don’t think I can master Chinese in both speaking and reading within these 3 years. A job hunting without a chinese skill in HK will be less competitive. This thing has been bothering me for a while, and my parents feel so too.

asukam- well for international graduates from hku, u get one year to find a job in HK… Therefore with that, within the first year after u graduate, you can work wihtout a working permit and therefore it makes no difference between urself and a local… from then on u would definately need to perform well to convince ur company to apply a working visa for you if they want you after the first year… i am quite sure thats how it works… so yea just my input on that…

hkubiz- nope i did not get the scholarship but i got admission so its good… tuition fee in hku is almost similar to local colleges in malaysia so its all good even without entrance scholarship but i will be working hard to get scholarship once i start my studies in hku…

Joshtn:
Is that also for HKUST or is it just for HKU? that you get 1 year to find job in HK and don’t need a work permit if you are working for a year?

I just got into HKUST! Though I doubt I will be attending since I already have my mind set to universities of my own country which announced all their decisions before April 1.

On another note, this doesn’t have anything against me right? I already had my HS transcript, SAT score, AP scores sent officially.
"As this is a conditional offer, you are required to submit the relevant official document(s) to our
office for verification as soon as they are available.
"

i just got in and im SOOOOOOOO happy !!! and i know this is going to go against what everyones suggesting … but my post is yet to arrive and it is my STATUS that is no longer under consideration!!! :stuck_out_tongue: … it says conditional offer…(subject to confirmation by formal offer letter from the Faculty concerned)… =D !!!

@ msaleh- Congrats dude  Which department did u get accepted in?

Congrats exe163 and msaleh!!!
what majors were you guys accepted into?

i was accepted into HKUST Global Biz and HKU Accounting and Finance!
hope to see you guys in either one haha

Just got my rejection by HKU (Gov & Law) :/

which is a weird feeling as I considered it to be a safe bet and since I got into a couple of programs that I considered to be far more competative…

well congrats to all of you still :)

6963 - Bachelor of Engineering and it was my first choice…
thanks both Muntasir and oldnite1…
and @oldnite1 …DUDE !!! YOU GOT INTO GL.BIZ HKUST??? WOOOOOOOOOAH !!! thats bloody awesome !!! isnt that like DAMN competitive???
and tobiz.int… ur already accepted by the other faculties so its not really a rejection is it?

You can apply multiple programs at once? I am wondering what’s the acceptance rate and general applicant statistics at HKU and UST. I am a bit surprised to be accepted into UST’s electrical engineering program with half decent SAT and a 3.33 UW GPA. From what I know colleges in HK, and Asia in general, look mostly score more than anything else. Also I didn’t get a interview, just mere application along with official scores services and transcript.

On another note, where are you guys from? I am from California, US, as I stated in one of the 140 pages of posts.

exe163: Which college have you decided to attend in the US?

Man… My status hasn’t changed yet. I applied for Computer Engineering, CSE, and CSE in this order.

Joshtn,
Thank you for your kindly input, I do feel much better now. Anyway, I think I will choose to attend the US one since I have already got accepted. (I applied to HKU late, and so far haven’t heard anything). For HK, I hope I will try to get a job after my graduation. =]
Good luck to you all in Hong Kong with everything! Cheers*

exe163,
Congratulations!!! Finally I found someone who also took SAT to apply! So you took only SAT1 or with SAT2 together? May I ask how much have you got from SAT 1? Thx!

I got a SAT of 1910 (750M, 570R, 640W) and highest 2 SAT2 of Chinese 800 and MathII 700, probably substandard for any competitive schools. Though I did take many AP classes.

I am now picking between UIUC and Lafayette college. I will probably going to the lesser known Lafayette LAC as my recent visit of the campus gave me a overwhelmingly positive impression.

Asukam,
which college did you pick over HKU? :)

it makes me so sad for myself but happy for for u at the same time … i was born in Hong Kong but my parents are Paksitani … later moved back to Pk… i had a 2130 on my SAT1 and 800 MAth C2 and 720 Chem … rejected everywhere in the USA … got into McGill, Waterloo and U of T in Canada though… but goin to either HKU(accepted) or HKUST(interview tomorrow)…
