HKU or HKUST

kyubaek90: wow, congrats! I really envy.
I’m sure whatever you decide will be the right choice.

@kyubaek90: Congratulation!! I’m really glad to hear that :D

@LuceViktoria: I’m currently taking a gap year in Beijing. If you are planning to visit Beijing sometime during the summer, plz feel free to contact me  I might go back to Korea in July, but I gotta come back to Beijing before I go to HK. hehe

Does everyone decide HKU residential halls? Hall application starts from tomorrow~

I got a phn interview from HKUST tomorrow. Is it necessary, who evr gets the interview, eventually gets the offer? (btw i already got accepted in the same major in HKU)

NICE JOB KYUBAEK!!!

hey guys,
is hkust generally flexible with ib conditional offers?
i was offered a conditional offer from ust but i dont know whether i can make it :S
what if i get like a pt less than what ust offered me? do you think i still stand a chance to appeal and get in? :S:S

What is the difference btwn conditional and unconditional offers??? I got the conditional… what are my chances??

@hkubiz i lived in singapore the last 6 years… so i think hk and singapore aren’t too different in terms of living pace n stuff… but it is different than indo (jakarta)… but so far it’s not TOO bad really… just gotta adapt to things like Hall living (if you’re in HKU) and hearing Cantonese everywhere! but it’s a good thing maybe, you’ll pick up a few words :)

congrats for those who have been given offer ! :)

and yes UST is very generous to IB students, i think they really like IB students… they really want to open up their uni for international students… in HKU, they’re still maintaining certain quota, but definitely it HAS increased for international students! many ppl still haven’t got offer too, so don’t worry if you haven’t heard anything from them !

for HKU HALLS…
suen chi suen is quite good, because they don’t really “expect” international students to participate in anything. and its new… though u have to walk a bit (10mins from campus)… i live on CAMPUS, it’s amazing… very convenient!! but yeah if you live in HKU halls, you HAVE to at least join a CULTURAL activity or SPORT activity… for some people (international students) this maybe a tough thing to do… but you can think bout it positively, you’ll get to know more of ur hall mates, and if you do things that you really like (sports or dance or choir) then ull have fun u know. positive attitude is needed in HONG KONG (in general) :D

@gd2318 - Any other HKU hall you would recommend? In which hall do you reside? I’m think I’m going to choose Starr or Suen Chi Sun:)

@Happyanonymous amaaaazing, how do you like Beijing? I loved that place, so bummed out I couldn’t make my way through there on my way home. Which is why I’d like to go through there and then take the 22h long train down south to reminisce on some good times ^^. Mind if I PM you for details? :D

@gd2318 Thanks for the useful info! May I ask what activities you’re involved in at your hall? And I was wondering, are HK students open to international students? Like, would it be strange if I joined some cultural activity even though there aren’t any other internationals? Haha. I know, might be a silly thought… Anyway, think I’m pretty set on Suen Chi Sun at this point. I’ll take those 10min as daily exercise :)

I’m surprised there are not many posts about IB exams! How’s everyone doing? Math HL P1 was quite tough I thought, especially the last two questions.

So scared about P2 tmr!

haha christkim12
i took math HL p1 as well. i took the tz2 test. it was challenging :stuck_out_tongue:
i hope the curve is very generous like the M09 ones hehe

ragh i bet p2 is going to be full of stats and probabilities :P

Thx everyone!!

And Good luck to all taking IB exams!!

But I do want to pose this question:

How do you all think of the ‘IBGM vs Gbus question’??

Which do you think is better??

Muntasir: I don’t think that’s necessarily so, but if you got an interview, then the uni is

seriously considering your offer, so you do have a high chance of an offer.

arnav3103: If you meet the conditions they set for you, then you’re 100% in.

A typo… got -> did get… Silly me…

and if not…Can i appeal to them??? Wil it make any difference?? Please reply fast…

arnav3103: I’m no expert on the matter. I wasn’t offered conditional offers since I’m not an

IB applicant. But according to past replies on CC, HKUST is pretty lenient towards IB applicants,

so if you are one, then you may have a chance of appeal. Anyone with more info plz help this lad out??

no i am not an IB student…im from india and gave my CBSE boards this year…!!! So will it be easy or is it gng to be really tough??

arnav3103: I can’t give a firm answer. There’s a guy named ‘Sam Lee’ in this forum. He’s quite

the expert on HK unis and their admissions… Plus, noone can be sure of admissions…Every year is different.

Hello!

I’m posting here to ask u guys whether I’m making a right decision or not… :(

This year, I’m admitted to HKU and U of Wisconsin Madison in States. If I applied to Business or economics major to both schools, well, I would probably go to HKU. However, the matter is that I got admitted to BA which bachelor of arts degree from HKU. In states, it is really free to change my majors if I don’t feel like taking it lol

Actually, HKU is a fairly good school but I’m really confused of making a choice because of those good things of state universities… HKU is highly ranked, in city, but it is not economics major… Wisconsin is also pretty good in states, and their economics program is strong. HKU is a cheaper than Wisconsin too. Those are what I’m considering now… Which skool do u think have more advantages for me… currently…?

one more Q… lol

Does it really matter what I’m majoring in Undergraduate?? Some ppl keep saying that it does not really matter what you do in undergraduate… they say graduate school is much more important…

@AlecDluz err, it really depends on what u’re looking for. I live in SWIRE HALL. For HKU Halls:

 • If you’re looking for convinience to campus (you don’t have to sleep in the library during exam week) then try SWIRE HALL and SIMON K.Y. LEE.
 • If you like new halls then STARR, SUEN CHI SUEN, LEE SHAU KEE, MORRISON.
 • If you want a more chill and relaxing halls with a good seaview, try those in SASSOON road. :)

@LuceViktoria - In Swire hall, i am in basketball team and dance team… well i’ve been doing those since middleschool-highschool. So I don’t really mind. Some other team practices are really harsh thou, like training at 7AM etc, but i guess they’ll be nicer to international students… and about local students, they’re kinda SHY to speak english… lol but if we are nice and friendly to them, they’ll be nice too… but yeah they tend to stick with other locals n socialize in cantonese of course. I am the only international student in basketball team, but they’re willing to translate during practice n stuff. Sometimes some of the locals would rather categorize them as international students, like those who’ve been in international schools/studied abroad.

DONT WORRY thou. international students in HKU stick together, we kinda know almost everyone (well maybe not) lol.

for IB STUDENTS: how were MATHS HL papers? last P2 killed many of us… lol

gd2318

haha yeah ive actually tried M09 papers to prepare for my HL math exams
and i felt that M09 was harder than what M10’s took
but still our paper 1 was really really tough… i think i did damnnn badly T.T
and lots of weird questions on paper 2 i thought.
i took tz 2
