HKU or HKUST

hi sonia, of the roughly 1xx intakes of the hku mbbs course, roughly 85-90% of them are reserved for top notch local students (the exam systems are changing recently but according to the old system they wud expect sth like >AAABBB in the HKCEE and >ABB in HKAL. of the 90%, roughly 40% are EAS’ed, i.e. those who had >6A in HKCEE or >10As in GCSE who performed well in interviews and thus could save the hassle of taking the AL, saving one full year. for translation of these grades, a B (or even C) in HKCEE is harder to obtain than an A in GCSE in most subjects except of course for subjects like english; a C in HKAL is also almost certainly harder to obtain than an A in UKAL,relevant statistics can be looked up online. there is no easy translation to IB but i am guessing > 40 shud grant you an interview.

now for the 10-20 non-jupas intakes, we are talking the typical 4-5A UKALer’s or the >40 IB’ers from local international schools, uk boarding schools, etc…; and needless to say heaps of mature students with B’s, M’s or Phd’s. Don’t forget both medical schools in HK only accept students who are fluent in the local dialect, i.e. Canto.

for medical research in some specific areas hku could well be world leading but most are just above average, teaching wise its typical but surviving the 5+1 years u are probably better equipped or should i say prepared than most medical grads in the world given the inhumane workload. as compensation you are paid ~HKD$50,000 per month as a first year MO in the main government stream (thats the 7th year) or ~$90,000(if lucky) in the private/commercial streams if you forfeit further training. tax rate in HK is 15%. good luck.

oh and as an bored old fart who just stumbled upon this forum, hving read a few threads, and most probably wont ever come back again, its prolly safe for me to say that, altho not entirely true, trying to compare HKUST to HKU is like comparing, er, a rock to diamond (fine hku is no diamond but lets say, er, a sapphire), no matter what the rankings might suggest and individual subject blah blah ****s, its not like the overpaid superduper US professors in HKUST can save your undergraduate degree anyway, and the tradition that HKU > CUHK > HKUST (except business, perhaps, not entirely convinced, quoting ipacman) is unlikely to change in the next decade, at least not locally anyway. good luck you all! enjoy hk! for the hkust ppl amongst you dont forget to drill hard and see if you find any diamond:)

overpaid superduper professors is the reason i am going to HKUST…
the quality of the faculty in HKUST is downright amazing!!

HKU is obviously the best but for science/engineering??? no ,not by a long shot…
the Research output from hkust will be 5-6 times higher than HKU…

For me personally its the professors, they are graduates from the top us/uk unis that i wish to go for my masters…
so it just seems ideal…
good luck to everybody!
cheers!

okay what about business? whats the rank for the three for business program?

Hi All! This is my first post :)

I am an Indonesian. Graduate from a Junior College in Singapore.

I applied for dentistry in HKU. I am a late applicant as I applied only in late May. I have just received an e-mail invitation for interview this coming July and of course I am flying there for interview.

As an international Non-Jupas Applicant. I guess I am more or less on the same boat as hevonik, except the fact that hevonik has been offered a place. I wonder whether anyone knows the success rate of international student. Especially considering that I am a late applicant.

Many thanks!!!

Heyy,

So some background, I’m an American citizen who is a full time student in Switzerland but on an exchange semester with Fudan University 复旦大学 in Shanghai. After an exchange week between Fudan and HKU I decided I would love to transfer to HKU and applied at the very beginning of June to the Int’l Business program. I have completed two years of University but am a senior by credits. I talked to a million different people at HKU when I first applied, but haven’t heard anything since. Does any know about what my chances are and when I might hear back?

-Thanks!!!
Bryce

hey Bryce…
it is pretty late to be fairly honest but they can speed up the Visa process if need arises…
your best bet would be to email them and ask…you should hear back in one week time at max…
intl business program is obviously very much in demand…

Thanks for your reply! I figured it was very late but I know they really want international students. The other programs I applied to were Finance/Economics and Engineering. Do you believe those are any easier to get into? The visa process doesn’t worry me much because I can enter on a tourist visa and then change it. I emailed them today, hopefully I will hear soon. I wonder if I was waitlisted…

bryceintl - I know a girl who was in the the international business programme, and she got notified at the end of july, so there is still a chance:)

does anybody know the date of the o-camp in the HKU halls?

@Byrce - as alexander said, there is still a chance but it is strange they haven’t contacted you as yet …
hopefully you get a positive response…Good luck!!

@AlecDluz &Anand78 thanks! I really hope you are right! I have been in contact with a few people at the school and I know that they have all my documents and are currently reviewing my file. Today I got a somewhat generic email saying I will know between April and August and to check online. Also, they said I can contact the staff to try and get an expedited answer. Do you believe contacting the staff would annoy them because I seem desperate or show my commitment? Because I can in fact wait till August because I have decided HKU is what I want and will take a year off if I don’t get in this year, so I can apply at the normal admissions time. Still, I would really like to know what’s going to happen with my life! What do you guys think I should do?
-Thanks so much!
Bryce

Hey guys,
I got into HKUST Accounting and HKU Accounting and Finanace.
Which one should I choose and why? I am leaning more towards UST but my parents are more into HKU :S

Hey! Are there anyone still waiting for an offer? Also, anyone got admitted into CUHK? I’m currently waiting for HKUST and making a decision between Purdue and HKU…

@ASUKAM- Dude, go for HKU!

bryceintl - I dont think it would matter that much. Because you applied so late, I think your best chance is to get waitlisted and then get an offer of admission if some student should fail to meet the conditions in a conditional offer or chose another uni instead of HKU etc. Its pretty late, so I think they will notify you as fast as possible if they decide to give you an offer.

@10063093 - Hey you! I have a few friends from my country who are still waiting for their offer from HKU. I know its strange that they are making them wait till August when the intake is in September. And I was also a late applicant btw. =)

and uh, I’ve just got my residential hall notice. I’m going to Starr Hall. ^^ See y’all there!

I just got an email saying they want a phone/face to face interview for the biomed engineering program at HKU.

I also got into emory university and i think iam planning on going there. But I still kinda want to check out HKU if i get in.

Does anyone know if HKU has a good biomed engineering program?

And any tips for the interview?

Hi! Its been quite some time since my last post - I’m going to Starr Hall! Anyone else going there?

@hkubiz- Are u on a conditional offer? I am and still hevnt heard anything bout the halls. Btw which major dude?

I’m on an unconditional offer, haven’t heard anything about the halls either.

When are people planning on going to HK?
