HKU or HKUST

I’m from the bay area in California. As of now I have a strong interest in majoring in global business. How about you? Do you by any chance know when the apps begin for HKUST?

hi,i am sriram from India.am from a science background and am interested in doing either civil or industrial engg. Last year the hkust forms began on the 8th of september,so we can expect it to be maybe a 2 weeks delay maximum from now,…so about two weeks from now and you could be filling in the form…cheers…lets see,we both have a common goal…

Haha, they start tomorrow! I’m actually really excited :smiley: Are you gonna apply to HKU too? I talked to someone who went from my school there too & she said HKU has a better reputation in Asia, but she said she didn’t get her acceptance letter till July :open_mouth: Are you gonna apply to any schools in the US?

oh yes,i am excited too.really want to study in china…
i had applied for Kansas and MIT and i got in both with full scholarship as i had got a silver medal in international physics olympiad,but i wasnt interested in going to the us. wanted to get some real taste of asia.

hey people. gd to see this thread reviving again! so im applying for HKUST and HKU this fall. so a few questions…lol

i heard hkust was rolling-based. it means that the eariler u apply, the higher chance u get…right? if its right, r u guys gonna apply, like right now? in september?

and about submitting “certificate and/or supporting documents for each qualification, exam/test that you presented in the application.” does that mean we have to send copies of our SAT, AP transcripts and the copies of awards we got? i thought that was absurd. common app doesnt require any of those. so i was confused.

and about recommendation letters. don’t they require any of them?

personal statement…that should be something similar to what u right for main essay in common app. right?

and anyone else applying to hkust as an international???

Hey all!

As a newbie, i just want to say how glad i am that this thread is here because it is really informative!!!

Ive got a couple of questions, in regards to which uni is better in the business field. HKU vs Chinese UHK vs HKUST.

I know that the MBA program at HKUST is the best, but that is a post-grad program. Is HKUST also the best in the undergraduate programs?? (in regards to business related programs ie accounting and finance)

the 2010 QS world uni ranks just came out, and in terms of social sciences HKU came first then ChineseUHK and then HKUST. (not really sure if business is equal to social science)

But according to 2010 ARWU world uni rankings done by a chinese university, under the business category, HKUST is the best out of all.

so now i just want your opinion??

@starrrgirl: I am not actually applying as an international student but as an exchange student. I am planning to go to HKUST next year!!

@ starrgirl
you are right. HKUST grants admissions on the first come first serve basis,so applying immediately is the key to get good scholarships and guaranteed admission.
i am an indian applying to both hku and hkust.

I BE APPLYING AS AN INTERNATIONALLL (=

@stargrl:
I don’t really understand how we send in our AP/SAT scores either… cause we never got them in the mail other than our AP scores. The only solution I found was to send them through collegeboard, since they have both HKU & HKUST under the list of schools they can send them to.

I do have a question about the personal statement though! What does it mean, “send something of interest to the panel” …? I’ve been writing personal statements for the UCs & Common app one and I have no idea which one to send =/

do u mind telling me where you’re from?

submitted my application to hku on 7th september. and they have given me an offer:)
full scolarship on tuition fees and a living allowance of 2700hkd per month.
All credit to international physics olympiad silver medal.thank god.
But want to go to hkust though as campus is really nice. keeping my fingers crossed for hkust results.

congrats masabulele! (=

dang that’s a hella fast offer tho 0.0 Do you think I should send in my hku one first or hkust…? What grade are you right now if you already got an offer for MIT ? (personally if I were that smart to get a full ride to MIT I’d go =/ )

I still have to wait till March until most of the schools I’m replying to respond haha

@vanilaliu
i am in grade 11 now. what grade are you in ?
wud love to know that.

@ vanila

i feel you first apply to hkust as thay have a first come first serve basis of admission eventhough thay dont declare it openly.
as you are keen to go into hte business line i suggest hkust mite be the place for you.apply to hku for namesake. hkust is better for you.

I’m in grade 12! american system though so i wonder if it’s different from india haha. we can’t apply to schools at all until then ;[ hmm alright I’m gonna try to send my app to hkust in by tuesday! (=

also, does anyone know if either universities take into deep acount your personal statements?

@vania
indian and american systems are not different-i am 16 years of age in grade 11.
even indians are not allowed to apply for any university before grade 12 but i applied on
early admissions scheme in MIT for students who performed well in international competitions.
Basically, the personal statement is just a test of your english writing skills and essay writing thats it.
none of top importance.
all the best
i have alredy applied to both schools.
looking fwd to seeing you there in hku or hkust
(prefer hkust though).

does everyone agree with what I said???

because throughout this thread i didnt really see a clear winner out of HKU/ChineseUHK/HKUST, particularly in the business subject area.

regards

@damonkey
For business dont even consider cuhk ,given the fact that you are an internatnal too.
So out of hku and hkust,
i would prefer hkust. it is the best for business,hku is better for humanities and science
hkust for engg. and business.
hope that helps

@masabulele

Are you really sure that personal statements don’t matter that much? I really have no idea which one to send but shouldn’t it be a given that I can write English well to them since I was born here? Oh & did they receive your supporting documents after they gave you the offer…? Cause 4 days for acceptance is really fast haha

@ VANIA
dont worry i am sure,if you could write a good essay ,will be a testimony to the fact that you have good skills.
just give hong kong and hku/ust professors an ego boost in your essay and you could be there.
i did give my supp. docs. but they were online.
i just gave them the links and thats it.

ps. i have a telephonic interview with ust tomorrow.
hoping for the best

Good luck! Tell me how it goes when you’re done (=

Well, I’m just really torn between sending essays since one of them I wrote really nice but it’s sorta about China & I feel that might lose the foreigner taste to it you know? Hm, I’ll definitely send everything in by tonight though. Haha I’m so excited LOL
