HKU or HKUST

Well I also received this email from HKUST yesterday. The thing is I had not even submitted my application yet but still got the email. So I believe the email was nothing out of the ordinary and was sent to all applicants who created an application. Still I was pretty exciting when I opened the email, made me feel that the university really wanted me lol.

yee~ seems like lots of us are trying to get into HKU or UST eh?
and woah, i see lots of ppl with really high IB or SAT or whatever marks, and i have to say, i feel stressed out…
going to apply as soon as i get my term 1 marks—from vancouver, canada, btw
and if i can keep up my current average of 97 then hopefullly they will take a second to consider my application? lol
and for TOEFL takers, goood luck cuz me actually aced it by accident xP
nice forum.
~fin~

hello, so Im a senior studying in Barcelona and I am going to graduate with a US high school diploma in 2011. What are my chances of getting accpeted into HKU with the International business and Global Managements Program cus i hear its UBER competitve…

My gpa is a bit blah 3.4
Ive taken 5 APs that range from 3-4
and my SATs are pretty average too 1800…

I’m aware of my low grades, so am I wasting my time here?
I had a lot of work placement and internships as well…

lemme know!!!
cheers

Ya nathaliesintes, i heard that HKU is like you said, UBER hard to get in, and that program is like, soo competitive…do they only take in 20 ppl or sth?
I guess you can still give it a shot=)
wait…gpa 3.4? like um, out of 4? guess you can try to go higher!
GL.

@nathaliesintes:
You will need at the minimum 2000 for SAT and solid 4s and 5s in at least 2 exams (if I’m not wrong) Contact me privately if you need more info on that program  Actually, you should expect competition to be very intense, even if you make it.
Nonetheless, good luck, and there is always no harm trying

helloo again!

I’ve heard a couple times that HKU likes to wait for senior year AP scores, which usually don’t come out until July, until they make their final decision. Does anyone know if this is still true, and if HKUST is similar?

Hey first time poster here, was wondering if anyone is facing the same problem as me.

I applied for HKUST-
1st choice: Global Business
2nd choice: Economics and Finance
3rd choice: BBA

They have offered me a place for BBA while my 1st and 2nd choice are still pending reply.
They need me to confirm my offer by 13 dec if not they will cancel my BBA place.

I haven’t heard from HKU and CUHK yet so I do not want to make a decision now.
I also would not like to waste HK$10000 on a deposit for the UST BBA place, in case I have offers from other schools.

What do I do?

@lyrmichael: You should try contacting the UST admission office and ask them to extend your date. You should also try asking them to release the other decisions early as to stay within the deadline (from what I have read they allow early release of decisions under special circumstances and your situation does fit into these circumstances). Also congrats on the offer.

Thanks for the advice Ragnarok! I will ask them for an extension of deadline and an early release of decision.

Are you applying to any universities in Hong Kong as well? Where are you from?

Pakistan, I have applied to HKUST for BSc in Biology, expecting my decision to arrive within a week or two. What about you, where are you from.

Oh I’m actually from Hong Kong, but I’m studying in Singapore now.
So what made you wanna study in Hong Kong?

Well I always planned to go to a country where I did not have any family member and which had a small Pakistani community for my university years. My plan is to experience a 100% international experience while being completely independent in order to gain qualities for my work life. Hong Kong universities proved a perfect fit for me as they had great academics and people there actually seemed to have a active social life. Similarly HKUST has a beautiful website + beautiful campus all the things that made me fall in love with it. There are also some great scholarship opportunities for international students and since I require a scholarship to continue further education I chose to apply and hope for the best.

Well I know long reply, this is the answer I would have actually given in a interview. Hope it didn’t bore you much.

It’s a really good answer! I will be impressed if I were the interviewer!

@lyrmichael: Objectively to assess your chance at HKUST for the first two choices - would really need some stats from you. Ultimately Global Bus is meant for the top 5% from the local bunch, hence you should have really competitive score if you intend to “fight” for a place.

Hi TheGrand, thanks for helping me!

I have emailed UST but they said that they would not extend the deadline for me. =(
My stats are not that competitive so I don’t think I’d be able to get into Global Business.
I just prefer not to make a choice this early given that other schools have not replied. (wouldn’t wanna waste $10000 for the deposit)

Singapore ‘A’ Level
Physics - B
Chemistry - B
Maths - A
Economics - B

SAT 2260 (Math 800 CR 780 Writing 680)
SAT Subject (Math2 780 Chem 760 Chinese 800)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

@lyrmichael
Heyy, just a quick question. Did HKUST started to send out acceptance letters? How did you find out? Was it through mail or email? I am just really curious because maybe checking the online status is pointless  lol xDD

Good luck at global business, personally I think your SAT scores are pretty stunning!!

Hi Lisa, I actually wasn’t aware that they had sent me an offer until their admissions office called. I’m impressed by UST’s efficiency and attention to my application.
I realised that the online system had actually sent me a notification email 8 days ago (it ended up in my junk mail). I’ll probably just accept the offer for my BBA and see how my other options go.

Yep you have to check the status on the online system for the offer.

What courses and universities are you applying for? Where are you from?

hello everyone againn (:

& @lyrmichael, congrats on your offer! I’m quite surprised they didn’t accept you into the global business program with your stats, and now it’s making me a little worried haha. I was wondering if they interviewed you yet, and if they offered you any scholarships by chance?

@lyrmichael: Sorry to hear that they did not extend your deadline. Well when you make a decision do tell. Your A-levels might be average, but your SATs are quiet awesome. So yeah goodluck with what ever decision you make and do tell.

@TheGrand: Hope you don’t mind a random person coming forward and asking a question, do you know how competitive the following courses are to get into at HKUST:
BSc in Biology
BSc in Molecular Biomedical Sciences
BSc in Biochemistry

@Vanialiu: No don’t jinx me! haha. My other two choices are still under consideration so hopefully i can squeeze into global business or econs&fin. UST has not interviewed me yet. Would I be eligible for scholarships given that I’m a Non-Jupas local student? What have you applied for?

@Ragnarok: Thanks for the encouragement! Hope that you’ll be accepted into Biology soon! Cross both our fingers! =)
