HKU or HKUST

@lyrmichael: How should I put this. If you just submit purely your SAT grades, it would get you in, but with your Singapore A level grades, you are probably not competitive enough. From what I know, you will need at least 2 As and 1B for UST’s GBUS, for HKU’s IBGM you would need 3As too, though for both schools I think if you are applying purely with SAT scores, 2000+ and a few 4/5s from AP (if its the American system) will do the job. Good luck nonetheless

@Rag - In terms of admission grades for LOCAL* (eg from Hong Kong),
MBS > BC > (marginally higher than) Bio, but I would speculate for overseas admission it is roughly the same. Its not among the most competitive courses in UST.

@lyrmichael:

oh sorry! I applied for the Global Business program as my first choice & the reg Business BBA as my second. I have no idea about how the scholarships work though since I applied as an international student from America.

@TheGrand
hellllooo! I was wondering if you think my stats would be “competitive” enough to get me into the global business program at HKUST or HKU

My SAT’s arent that great (reasoning: 2070 & subject tests: math 710/ world history 690)
GPA: 4.21
AP scores: 5, 5, 5, 4

@vanialiu
wow! your stats look super competitive, three 5’s one AP courses? that’s super darn impressive. and what’s with the 4.21 GPA? Isn’t it suppose to be go up to 4, no?

@lyrmichael
Thanks for the information! so you recieved the offer through the email address you provided? Is that right?
Congrats on the offer! I’m sure you will get into global business!
I applied to HKUST, same majors as you :slight_smile: And I am from Canada!

Good luck everybody! decisions come out in a couple weeks! Hopefully we’ll see eachother at HKUST next year!

and for the scholarships, I think you are automatically considered for all of them, even the swire ones this year.

@Lisacom

Aha, honestly I hope so too :X but now I’m pretty worried HAHA. My accumulated weighted GPA is 4.21, but if not weighted its 3.9 or something like thatt.

Glad to know more people applying for the same major!

Hope we all get in (=

did you apply to HKU too?

@Vanialiu
I don’t know much about the US system, but it sounds like a high average to me!
Yes and no. I applied for HKUST but not HKU, I just really want an international university experience, but I can’t really afford without a scholarship. So HKU is out of question for me.

Where are you from? and what made you interested in applying to HKUST? I always find that very interesting!! :-)

@Lisacom

Thankss :smiley: I’m from California & I applied for the global business program at HKU too, but I’m really worried about scholarships and fees. I really want an international experience as well, and I love the city life in Hong Kong. My initial interest sparked from their global business program, especially since I can’t find majors like that in the UC’s, and I’m dead set on studying abroad eventually. If I don’t get accepted into the global business program at HKUST/HKU I’ll probably reconsider even going though =/ It just seems like the perfect environment I can assimilate into and attain a broader perspective of the world at the same time. I really hope scholarships come around though, cause plane tickets back and forth throughout the year would be so costly ;(

how bout youu? (=

@Vanialiu - Looks good to me. You just need to show them you really want the program. Chances are that if one institution accepts you, the other will too, so you may have to pick one between the two.

Does anyone know what grades I would need ( ontario Canada System) to get into a Business or Computer Science Program at either HKU or HKUST. Also, what about the dual-degree program, how hard is it to get into that ?

@TheGrand: Thanks for your help! I shall cross my fingers and hope for the best. By the way, I’ve read that you’re currently in HKUO (IBGM) now, may I ask how HKU’s atmosphere is generally?

@Vanialiu: haha its okay i was just joking! Your stats certainly look great, i’m sure you can get the courses you want.

@Lisacom: Yup! UST will send you an email telling you to log into the online system to view your updated status.

Hope to see everyone there!

I kind of decided to reject the BBA offer from UST, because I prefer HKU/CUHK if I’m offered BBA from them as well. My friend who’s in UST now is telling me that she feels quite stressful there because of the ultracompetitive environment (from the mainlanders and the frequent tests/quizzes), so that kind of put me off abit.

By the way just curious, why aren’t any of you interested in CUHK?

lol. Any uni in HK will be super competitive due to the local/mainland competition. There is nearly no way that international students can compete effectively (especially when you first enter the uni and aren’t used to the environment) unless you decide to work as hard as them. Local HK students are used to studying up to 2-3 every night even a month before exams. Mainland students are even more hardworking. Howver, you will have a language advantage but thats it.

@lyrmichael: Well I would have loved to apply to CUHK, but sadly they have a Chinese requirement for bio students. Also they don’t have any Financial Aid scheme and require the student to be able to pay for all three years (which I am sadly unable to do) . Still if I fail in both HKUST and HKU then CUHK would be my choice. Also I haven’t heard much talk about it so maybe that also puts it a bit behind the others.

@Kazakia: Well I personally study 8 hours daily (can take it upto 10 when required) will I still not be able to compete with the locals. It would be seriously sad if I end up getting at the bottom of the curve.

@TheGrand: Thanks for the reply, I actually did not want to apply to a very competitive course so yeah your words assured me. Also just a few questions, how is the male to female ratio of hk universities and how is the dorm life.

Hello hello!

I sure see at lot of HKU/UST business apps =D. Thought I’d drop in and say hi, I’m applying for HKU/UST BBA too ^^.

@vanialiu
ahha! That’s pretty cool! So many international students are attrack to HKUST because of its financial supports! Well personally, I love travelling and spenting four years in Hongkong seems like the best way to do it. However, I received a full scholarship at a Canadian university already, so I am not quite sure of how HKUST’s decision will effect me :slight_smile: I spent last year in Switzerland and a friend of mine got in from Canada and she loves absolutely EVERYTHING about it. So… that’s why I applied!

@lyrmichael
Thanks for the information! Hopefully I ll get an email soon. Best luck!

Hey everybody!! I love the heavy traffic here! It shows some “perspective” students’ spirit!!

I love reading this thread :]
Almost done with the requirements-- I’ll apply in two weeks.

Quick question, though. Do I need to send a physical transcript to HKUST at this point? Or will a scanned version suffice? Because it seems HKU wants a physical copy…

@Sonata: Well for HKUST a scanned copy of your transcript would be sufficient, as they provide you with a space to attach your transcript. Also you should try submitting your application a bit early, you can upload the things you are missing even after you submit the application. Also what course are you applying to?

@MrWaffles: Welcome to the forum and goodluck with your application.

@Lisacom: Compared to the previous years the spirit is a bit lacking currently, though it is quiet understandable since most of us don’t have a offer yet. though I do hope the community does get a bit more established like the previous years. Also congrats on the Canadian offer you received.

@Ragnarok1992

Ah, I see. The scans are ready, then. Thanks~ I’m applying to Bba prof. accounting for UST. For HKU, the usual Bba. Erm, I wanted to wait until my December SAT scores came out before I applied. Should I just go ahead and leave those blank?

Well I left them blank and once I receive my scores I will just call them to inform them, so yeah you can do the same. It won’t hurt your chances one bit.

@Ragnarok1992: Thanks ^^

Does anyone know how HKU and/or UST does course selection? It seems like the tuition is a fixed amount. Does that mean everyone takes the exact number of hours every semester or just as many we think we can handle =).

Hi everyone, very happy to meet you all here! First-timer here but I love the atmosphere here! The comments that everyone provide here is so detailed and diverse!

@ lyrmichael: Hi michael, I’m also a Hongkonger who is educated in Singapore! Actually I’m quite interested in CUHK and have already applied for its law, bba and econs. As for HKU, UST, I’ve applied their bba and econs programmes. Hoping for the best though.

Just a side note: From what I have been seeing in this thread, it seems that many international applicants have viewed UST as near HKU or CUHK in terms of overall prestige but haven’t you guys considered CUHK for their bba or econs? Cause I know in the eyes of the locals, it will always be HKU>CUHK>UST>CityU/PolyU, in terms of prestige and history though. I do share the same sentiments and my relatives in Hong Kong, California and Vancouver think so too. For example, in Singapore, NUS is much older and more highly revered than NTU because it is the first university in Singapore. Therefore, even though global rankings claim that NTU has a better business school than NUS, many people I know still chose NUS’s bba over NTU’s, citing history and prestige as their reasons. I do think that’s a valid reasoning too. What do you guys think about it?

@joecheung: oh that’s great to hear! which school are you from?
My Hong Kong friends also seem to think that generally HKU>CUHK>HKUST based on the reasons you have given below; Most of them end up either in HKU or CUHK.
