HKU or HKUST

@cocomo: About 20% of HKU’s undergrad population is international (including the mainland). Probably higher than any US universities/colleges. As I said, you only apply to engineering directly and declare your major in your second year, so I see nothing to worry about. Overseas applicants are seldom considered for their third option anyway. HKU seldom offers full scholarship to overseas student (though a partial yes) - ask them for more info!, HKUST does a better job in giving out scholarships like toffee candies, but again thats for you to weight :P

@Vanialiu - No lol, if its the program coordinator then certainly not very fluent… XD - Probs 20-30 minutes according to previous interviewees on this thread if I remember.

AP credits does not help you in anyway in HKU for college credit - which I thought is a bit unfair initially - but believe me, those scores really don’t put you in “Advanced Standing” anywhere hahahaha - even if you were to repeat a course of similar content.

@The Grand

Oh…great HAHA. I hope they understand me though, since I tend to talk really fast under pressure -___- If anything I’ll woop out some chinese I guess LOL. Should I try to suck up & be like HKU is such an amazing university yadada or should I just be neutral about it? I already addressed the person interviewing me in the email incorrectly already, SIGH.

Hi guys, I’m new here
I just got an email from HKU saying i’ve got a phone interview tomorrow, it’s only going to be 5-10 minutes, but i’m still wondering what kind of questions they are going to ask, if anyone can give me any info or anything, thank you so much. And i’m also aware this may have been asked before i’m sorry for asking this question again!

Is there anyone still applying to HKU or UST, but haven’t send his application yet?

And do you know any polish people studying on any of these universities or planning to do so?

@Vanialiu
You don’t hv to expound how great HKU is, just be yourself. if you’ve written in your application that you speak Cantonese/Mandarin, the interviewer might switch to either or both for verification. If not then it should be pretty straightforward.

@lattedreamer
What degree program did you apply to? Questions could be as random as what you did for the summer to degree specific ones (esp for Business & Medicine) Just read up the basics on HKU/HK, prepare for general questions such as why you applied/your interests/what you plan to do with your degree. Anyway, the purpose of the interview is usually to verify what you’ve written in your application and for them to gauge what kind of applicant you are.

@Aleksandra
There is a Polish guy - Mark (i forgot his surname) at HKU. Try looking him up through Facebook or something.

@dohyun05
wrt your personal statement i don’t think you need to worry too much. It’s just to give the admission tutor a feel of who you are (as long as there’re no typos/grammatical mistakes you’re fine) HKU and HKUST are totally separate so no one’s gonna check if you sent in the same one. Your SAT score is alright but with an IB score of 42 why would you bother pulling it down with your SAT? ;)

Hey everyone,

Just wondering…with what I have…are my prospects at HKU, CUHK, HKUST looking fine?

SAT: 1960 (630 CR, 640 W, 690 M)
SATII Biology: 680
SATII Maths II: 690

TOEFL: 106

AP World History:5
AP Calculus BC: 4 (subscore 3)
AP Biology: 3
GPA: Grade 11 GPA was 3.63 and cumulative GPA is 3.82 (for all years of high school)

My extracurricular activities are debating (captain at my school), public speaking (was runner up at a competition), MUN, and I’m on the badminton team at my school.

Majors that I want to get into include Economics/ Finance, or Pharmacy.

@Vanialiu - Just be yourself and be genuine - telephone interviewers tend to be able to pick up “fake” responses very quickly

@Hulk - Not sure how your GPA would translate since I do not know which country’s system you are describing. But from SAT and AP scores you should make the cut for Econ/Fin in HKU and UST (I don’t know for CUHK since few intl students choose there so I never know) - For Pharmacy either your are marginal or below the cut-off grade. BUT these two subjects are so different if you put them in order of priority - you better be prepared to justify why your choices are in that order - should you be asked.

Hey guys,
before i submit my scholarship form, i was wondering whether my application for scholarship at HKU would affect my chances of getting an offer.
I heard that they give offers later for students who applied for scholarship…
is this true?

Hey :)

Would you be so kind to provide me with information if supporting documents could be send to the HKU after 30th of December? I would greatly appreciate your answer.

@Aleksandra
Hey, if you go to Forwarding...[/url”>Home | Admissions Office, the Registry]Forwarding… and go to the admission section, there is a link to admissions FAQ.
It says that there is no specific deadline to the sending of your supporting documents, but it is highly recommended that you send i before the 30th of December.
The earlier you submit your supporting documents, the earlier you will receive an offer.
However, you could send it after 30th of december … a few of my friends at school are planning to send their supporting documents during january anyway.

hi! im new here in the hku/hkust forum:) good to meet you all!
i need help with the ‘DATE’…
applied for hkust(Beng), but i actually did not finish the application…problem is that it’s rolling basis T-T

the question is that…am i toooo late to get accepted??
when is the deadline actually?
would a lot of int students already done the application?(i guess so…but i hope they are working with applications JUST AS i am doing now…T0T)

Hello. I’m currently filling out the application for HKU and having some trouble with the Public Examinations section. It has sections for High School Graduation Diploma and USA Grade 12 Courses. Am I to list the courses that I am taking now? My school year consists of two semesters and I have two classes that are only one semester long as compared to my other classes which last for two. How would I list them?

And if I am going to take AP exams in may, do I predict the result I am to get?

Thanks.

I got an interview for Product engineering and Marketing from Polyu on January 5th :D. Any advice? Do’s and Dont’s? This programme will only accept 30 students, so it’s quite competative I guess… Is an interview anything special or will they take interviews with a lot of applicants?

Hi everyone,
I am an international student and I have straight A’s in GCE O levels(8 subjects). My expected grades in GCE A levels are AAA*A .Plus, I have 2030 in sat. What are my chances at Hku or HKust?

And do i have a chance at scholarship.?

Thanks!

@ katolalachoi:
I didn’t even know we had to do a cover page so I just hand wrote my app number on all the documents. How do I know that HKU doesn’t care much about how (not) well written the small things are? Cause I got an interview. So as long as you’re a stellar student HKU will consider you. ;)

Hi all!

I currently attend UC Berkeley and plan to study abroad in Hong Kong the following year. I am trying to gather as much information as I can to have the best experience there! Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I am curious about the pros and cons of HKU and HKUST. I am planning to study business there. Can any local people talk about the reputations of the two universities- how is the social life, environment (location), activities, academics, and general reputation of the schools? I am also interested to know which dorms are the most social and best to live in! I would really appreciate insight from anyone who has studied in any of these universities. Thank you soo much!

@hmmidk I do not study at either HKU or HKUST but I am a long time HK resident and I am applying to HKU this year. I’lltell you what I know about the two universities.

Reputation: HKU has the overall better reputation both locally and internationally (it was ranked no.1 in Asia) but HKUST might have the edge in business. Certainly it is very famous locally for its business program

Location: HKU is in Pokfulam on Hong Kong Island. It’s a nice, pretty area (some sea views) which is pretty close to Central (one of the main business and shopping districts in HK) and to Lan Kwai Fong (the clubbing district). Howerver, the only way to get to Central is by bus or taxi). It’s a green campus but it’s pretty small.

HKUST on the other hand is in the New Territories so it’s a lot more remote - further away from the consulate, good American restaurants, clubbing etc. iOf course it’s urban too (as is almost every place in HK) but the campus is bigger and supposedly quiter. You can do most of the journey to HKUST by MTR (subway) but you will need to catch a bus as well.

Heelllo people please help I just tried make a payment on HK and after all I have such a message:

ORA-12899: value too large for column “ADMISSION2”.“STUDYWEB”.“OVERSEASCH_NAME” (actual: 115, maximum: 100)

Did they get money or should i do it again? PLEASE HELP ASAP
