HKU or HKUST

verystressed
yep i’ve already accepted the offer and rejected UBC’s offer. so it’s a one-way ticket lol! it was a pain to let go of the UBC offer though…
hmm what made you want to apply to HKU? (:
but still, wow. i heard that canadian universities only look at your grades…so your grades must impress the evaluators to get in.
U of T is great too! hope you’ll get in! btw are you from ontario?

@rissah
It was one day after Chem & my friends ditched me/ couldn’t find them. I was bored because I had one hour to kill, and HKU was at our school. The counselor told us to go, so I reluctantly did and got a nice brochure (the one with with ice cream). It was pretty cool and I started looking into it. Before there were tons of people who got into HKU, but this was actually the event that led me to apply (and convince my ditcher friend to too).
Thanks! Trust me, they aren’t impressive by Asian standards. McGill is not that hard to get into for Arts, but it’s super selective for Arts & Science and those sciency stuff. I hope I go to U of T Trinity, but the only possibility is if I don’t meet the offer…It’s a catch-22 -sigh-.
And yeah, I’m from Ontario.
It’s sad to let a college go, especially when you wanted it so badly before. :slight_smile:
Good luck at HKU since you’re definitely going there! I really need to check it out for myself.

Hey! I’ve got my conditional offer today for mechanical engineering finally from HKUST!

HKU is so much harder to get in than all the other schools in Canada… if u are applying as nonjupas or international.

verystressed
haha you actually had a story behind your reason for application.we don’t even have HKU information days here.
yeah that’s what i heard, but isn’t the business school reputable as well? i applied for sciences…so i know it would be harder for me to get in hahaha.
i also heard that HKU is reputable for their business major…and it’s also great because most of the economy will be focused around China, so HKU will be an easy gateway to the China market.
do tell us what you think about the campus when you’ve visited. we’re dying to know :)

ammar93scorpio
congratulations!! that’s great news! hope you’ll enjoy yourself at HKUST (:

jbaeur24
it is? is it because they require much more than just looking at grades or is it because competition is fiercer?

In Canada, there are plenty of universities for people to choose from so more spots will be open. i.e. in UTSG, I can say that a majority of the students are international students. I think in Canada almost everyone can go to university if people put in a little effort. The requirements are not that high. In HK, there are not a lot of universities so offers are hard to come by, especially for international students. Anyways, what did you apply for?

@ammar hey congrats!! do you recieve it by email or other methods?? I applied to Mechanical engineering as well and did not receive anything yet!! Also do you have an interview with them? You apply as international student or non-jupas??

@jbauer-
yes but the number of internationally well ranked colleges are fewer in comparison-- only UBC, McGill, and U of T. In HK, however, there’s HKU & HKUST & CUHK. There are also a handful of other good colleges there.
And actually I think offers are pretty easy to come by for international students, since everyone in our school who has applied has been accepted. I’m not talking about stellar students, but those without the 2000+ SATs and slightly above average GPAs (w/o many AP’s).

Did anyone get accepted to HKUST or CUHK and applied as an international student? I applied for quantitative finance major and I’m just curious if anyone got any acceptance especially CUHK. Thanks!

Hey guys!!! new to the forum !!

I went to the HKU interview earlier this month for BBA. However, the thing that Im worried about is that Ive still not heard anything from them!!! :frowning: some of my friends got offers from them already without interviews… do u guys think I’ll still get an offer?

@rissah
thanks a lot

@saumanc
I applied as an International student and got my offer through my online application account. I received an e-mail first which told that my application status has changed and so I should check my application account. And I did’nt have any interview.

@crabbie1234. what kind of grades/scores do you have?

Quote: ‘Nothing could be farther from the truth. HKUST has just started it’s most intensive ‘applicant scouting’ program. They’re handing out scholarships like toffee! At least for international students they are.’

Is this really true?

Hi. I am actually quite interested in engineering. I have just completed my GCE A-Levels last year. I also applied for HKUST last year. (By the way, I am HK PR)

Can anyone out there help me to answer some of my questions?

1) May I know what are the main requirements for one to get a HKUST scholarship?

2) If a student is financially needy, is it true that he/she will be able to get a full tuition grant?

3) What are the chances of one getting into a course of his choice when he is invited for an interview? Is it true that everybody who has applied to HKUST will be invited for an interview?

4) I heard that engineering courses in HKUST are actually quite ‘unpopular’ comparitively with other courses like business. Thus, I worry about the job prospects of engineering in HK because I heard that HKUST has very strong business faculties, but not so much for engineering faculties. (Do correct me if there is anywhere that I may be wrong). Furthermore, are engineering degrees in HKUST recognised internationally? Can anyone enlighten me on these?

5) Will I have a better career prospects in Singapore & more overseas attachment opportunities by studying engineering in HK / Singapore?

6) Will it be more advisable for me to take up engineering in HK / Singapore (NUS/NTU)?

7) I notice that there are quite a few scholarships to apply for. However, I find the information at the website quite messy & can’t really understand. Are there any general deadlines of those scholarships in HK which are applicable to me & can anyone kindly share with me any other information on scholarships in HK which you know?

Your replies & advises will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading up till here! Thanksssss! (:

Adding to my previous post, I applied as a local applicant because I can be HK PR. However, I stay outside of HK. The interview notification which I have received asked me to go for an interview at HKUST in April. From what I heard, applicants staying outside of HK will be invited for a phone interview instead. Why is mine so different? What should I do?

@verystressed - Good luck with that, International applicants are facing tough requirements, but hey to be fair, they admit the top 1% from the local pool, so those requirements are fair. If you end up attending IBGM, pm me :slight_smile: Good luck!

@h1every01 - Gotta go to bed so I’ll give my short reply. Yes - scholarships are given out like toffee to international students (not sure for your case unless you are applying with intl qualification), even for those with comparatively average grades (eg. IB 33-36ish).
NOT true about getting full tuition grants, but since you are a HK-er, you can apply for government loans should be you be eligible. Interview is only one part, your grades and interest matter much more. Depends on what sort of engineering you are taking up, but civil engineering has a pretty stable demand in HK from what I observe. Scholarships have individual deadlines you have to check them yourself, chances are that they are highly competitive if they are open to the local applicant pool, unless of course you are in the top 1~10% of your cohort/world’s cohort. Contact them telling them your situation (eg. overseas)

Thanks! (:

Btw, I have international qualification (GCE A-Level) and I am still waiting for my results which will be released in March this year. Although I have international qualification and study abroad in my entire life, I applied as a local applicant as I have HK PR. Thus, am I considered to be part of the group for “scholarships are given out like toffee to international students”? Moreover, I am interested about chemical engineering (not so much of civil engineering). However, I have heard that the career prospects for it in HK is not very good. Need help in this! Thanks!!

@TheGrand- Thanks! A large source of information was actually you. Haha. I just read your comments and it was like “ahh” “oo,” and it helped me learn much more about what it wanted.
So if I do go, I’ll definitely pm you, cause IBGMers are all buddies. :slight_smile:
That is if I pass the AP’s, cause I’m paying the deposit and 10,000 HKD is kinda a lot (equivalent to the scholarship they give me per year).

For those of you who got offers, were they conditional? If they were, were they easy or hard to achieve?

What are the chances of HK universities giving unconditional offers? :O

u never know
